MINORS DNI
INT. GUMSHOE VIDEO â THRILLER AISLE â DAY
âNo, it's not. That's not what she said. Someone is in trouble. Something bad is happening!â squawks a woman from the running TV in the background while your fingers trace over the backs of the VHS as you walk past the shelves.
1 PM on a Wednesday certainly is no rush hour at Gumshoe Video. Even the most annoying film bros don't come here at this time of day to flaunt their knowledge of the craft and subsequent absence of social skills. You're in the clear, pretending to deeply think about your choice in entertainment for the end of the day, even though that couldn't be further from the truth. Throwing a glance over your shoulder, you spot the business owner, entranced by the film that he put on to pass the time, and you can see his plush lips silently mouthing along to the dialog. Cute. And easy to trick.
It's not your first time here. No, you made sure to become familiar with the place over the course of months now, learning where each genre and title has been sorted into its rightful place.
Certain old VHS-tapes can sell for a small fortune online, and for every tape you rent, you take one for free with the plan of selling it to the highest bidder. Currently, you have a stack at home, waiting for you to finally stop procrastinating and open up that damn eBay account.
Your pinky catches on a specific tape. 'A History of Violence', currently estimated to lure an additional 199 bucks into your greedy bank account. Quietly, you pull out the film, leaving a gaping hole in the neatly sorted row as you slip it into your purse.
With nimble hands, you try to rearrange the tapes to make the missing VHS a little less obvious, but in your haste, a few of them escape your clammy grasp and clutter to the ground. A head of silky brunette hair whips around, and you're met with pretty blue eyes as the store owner turns to face you.
You let out a giggle, trying to sound as vapid and innocuous as possible. Youâre in character now. The persona you chose? An unassuming, ditzy little thing thatâs hot enough to distract him, but stupid enough as to not get suspected of any wrong-doings. Youâd say youâre a good actress. A fantastic one, even.
"Sorry," you purr, batting your eyelashes at him. "I'm a little clumsy today." You're already bending over to pick up the tapes when he makes his way over to lend a helping hand, and you make sure to show off your cleavage in an intentionally accidental way. You know heâs into you. Youâve been seeing the heat in his gaze for weeks now, along with the occasional crack in his voice and an almost endearing desire to impress you. Itâs his biggest weakness and the reason your plan has been working flawlessly until now.
"Hey, hey, no worries. Uh, gravity wins sometimes. Don't sweat it," he grins at you, brushing his fingers against yours as the two of you work together to put everything back into place.
"What exactly were you looking for anyway?" he suddenly asks, breaking your focus for a second.
"Uh, Moonstruck," you mutter, completely on autopilot. The store owner nods, pursing his lips as he mulls over your answer. Youâre aware of your blunder before he even answers.
"Moonstruck? Then you're in the wrong section. You know, with how often you come here, I thought you got the hang of our layout by now." Fuck, heâs got you. Play dumb. Play dumb!
Your poker face almost cracks, but you keep your composure. Or at least you try to. "Huh? Oh - I... right. God, I'm just all over the place today." You giggle again, relieved by the way his grin seems to soften. Hook, line and sinker. He may think heâs detective Sam Spade from âThe Maltese Falconâ, but youâre Brigid OâShaughnessy. Or heâs Batman and youâre Catwoman. Or â well, it doesnât matter. Baseline is, youâre snatching tapes right from underneath his nose while heâs too busy fantasizing about whatâs underneath your clothes.
The store owner speaks up again, lazily rubbing the back of his neck as he leans against the shelf, and his free hand wanders and gestures around a bit as if heâs trying to figure out which pose would look the coolest and most effortless.
âRight. Actually, that wasnât really fair of me.â You tilt your head at him, eyebrows furrowing ever so slightly which prompts him to elaborate. âSome of our tapes went missing. Yâknow, some of the oldies and goldies? Thatâs why I didnât stock Moonstruck this week.â
Your lips part in surprise, but all you can reply with is a soft âohâ. The store owner shrugs, leaning in towards you. Thereâs something conspiratory about his expression which makes your stomach churn a little. âYeah. But I do still have it. Itâs just in my office.â
Thereâs a beat of silence as you mull over the unspoken offer. Your plan is built on the one tape you always rent for cheap. No one would think youâre stealing if youâre actually paying for something, right? Despite this, you wonder if you should call it a day and head home with the stolen film hidden in your purse. Alibi be damned.
âI⌠Thatâs great. Uh, actually, I was just about to ââ he cuts you off with a casual wave of his hand, and the grin on his face widens once more.
âDonât worry. Iâll even give you a discount. Just follow me.â
INT. GUMSHOE VIDEO â NEIL LEWISâ PRIVATE OFFICE â DAY
The private office of Neil Lewis, cinephile and pop culture enthusiast, is decorated with a distinct Film Noir charm, lovingly empathized by leather chairs and a checkered floor. Not to mention the letters on the door. He calls himself a private investigator. A joking title that makes you palms sweat ever so slightly. You notice that he set up a small camera on his desk, but he brushes it off as a regular procedure.
"So... Moonstruck,â he starts, gesturing for you to take a seat. Which you do. âGreat pick. Just curious - Why did you go for that one?" The question makes you pause for a second.
"The... the cover spoke to me,â you casually lie, trying to sound somewhat cute, but it doesnât land. Neilâs expression quickly betrays his skepticism, and his lips part while his narrowed gaze wanders around the room for a minute. "Hm. And what about the other one?"
"What do you mean?" Play dumb, play dumb, play â but heâs not letting you off the hook so easily.
"The other tape."
Silence fills the office, and you swear the VHS in your purse is starting to burn a hole right where itâs settled in your lap.
"Which... other tape? I just picked out this one."
"Ohhh, right. Sorry. My bad. Just⌠Moonstruck." The way heâs saying this makes it seem like he enjoys the taste of the letters on his tongue. You nod, a little too eager to get this conversation over and done with.
"So you wonât mind me looking through your purse?" Neil leans forward in his seat, folding his hands on top of his desk. Your eyes briefly fall onto the little desk name plate thatâs undoubtedly just made out of shiny, golden plastic. But it does the job. It intimidates you. At least to a certain degree.
âNo,â you lie through your teeth, trying to shrug off the tension. âI⌠itâs certainly no problem, Mr. Lewis. None at all.â
Neil lets out an apathetic sigh as he rises from his seat, causing the leather to squeak. His steps seem a little too confident for a video rental owner as he moves around the desk to first walk over to the door and lock it. âNeil is fine. Iâm not a big fan of⌠formalities,â he starts, coming up behind you to set his hands on your shoulders. His hands are gentle but firm, causing your body to warm right down to the deepest layers. To make his control over the situation even more apparent, he splays his hands, tracing your collarbone with his middle finger. Itâs subtle enough that he could pass it off as a figment of your imagination if you should choose to speak up. But you donât. You stay quiet, even as he leans down and you can hear the murmur of his voice right next to your ear.
âOpen your purse.â
You bite your tongue, slowly opening your purse to find Cherâs face grinning back at you. Itâs Moonstruck. In all of its romantic glory, and it makes both you and Neil freeze for a moment. You lick your dry lips, saying the first thing that comes to mind.
"That's mine."
"Yours?" You wouldnât know, but his eyebrow twitches upward at your ridiculous claim.
"Yeah. A... personal copy." Great, now youâre doubling down.
"With my name on it?" Silence, yet again. You could basically hear the dramatic music that the producers of any reality TV shows use in the background of any tense scene. But this isnât scripted. No, all of this is improvised.
"... what are the odds?" you croak, feeling how your throat goes dry in real time. Neil scoffs in reply, shaking his head, and his grip on your shoulders tightens a tad before he lets go entirely. His expression is stern as he steps in front of you, leaning against the desk and crossing his shapely arms over his chest. For a moment, heâs silent, letting his eyes wander all over your form in a slow, appreciative way that makes your palms get sweaty. âYou do know I have to call the police, donât you?â
âWhat?â Your breath hitches in your lungs, and you blink a few times, almost in an attempt to shake yourself out of this very strange dream. âThis⌠this is just one tape. Isnât this kind of excessive?â
âYeah, maybe itâs one tape today. But youâve been coming here for weeks.â Your jaw drops, but you canât seem to come up with an appropriate response. Youâve been had. For the past months, you were convinced that he only saw you as a little piece of eye candy wandering through the store, but heâs been seeing right through you all along. Now you definitely donât feel like Catwoman anymore. When he notices that youâre not going to say anything, Neil continues.
âDid you really think we donât have security cameras all over the place? Well, Iâve been watching you the entire time, playing along when you pretended to be all ditzy and cute. Itâs not just one instance. Itâs a whole case, baby. And youâll go to jail.â That makes you break out of your stupor, and you can feel your pulse speeding up.
âNo- wait, no, no, no. Please, canât we just talk about this for one second?â
âI donât bargain with thieves.â Heâs smug. Too smug for your liking, considering that heâs threatening you with the loss of your precious, precious freedom.
âPlease, Iâll do anything,â you plead, fixing him with the biggest puppy dog eyes you can muster in an attempt to appeal to the soft, awkward side of him. And he cracks. At least the tiniest bit.
âMaybe⌠maybe we can work something out. But Iâll need to search you first. Who knows what else youâre hiding.â He gestures for you to stand, and you get up from your seat, causing the leather cushioning to faintly squeak once again. âSpread your arms. To the side.â
Your expression settles into a pout, but you do as youâre told, much to Neilâs satisfaction. He returns to his previous position behind you and starts by touching your shoulders, slowly trailing his hands down your arms. His fingers leave tingles behind on your skin, and youâre even more aware of how close heâs gotten when you feel his breath on the back of your neck. His cheeky hands continue to wander, making their way down your sides, softly squeezing around your waist before he moves on to your hips. You try to think about it as a TSA search, but itâs a little hard to do when his hands linger for much longer than necessary on your thighs and your calves as he crouches down. Once heâs satisfied, he straightens back up, and you almost think heâs done before he leans in to rasp into your ear.
âYouâre gonna have to take your clothes off⌠so I can search you more thoroughly.â
Your heart skips a beat, and youâre about to protest, but heâs already pulling your top off, tossing it aside before he moves on to your shorts. A sigh escapes him as he pulls them down along with your panties, and he doesnât give you even a second to recover before heâs gripping and caressing the curves of your body. Leaning his chin on your shoulder, he runs his fingers over your hips, feeling how your skin warms beneath his touch. âTake your bra off.â
âWhat? Thereâs no way I could be hiding a tape in there ââ In response, Neil lightly pinches your thigh, causing you to jump a little and let out a soft whine. Seems like thereâs no way around it. With shaky hands, you reach behind yourself to unclasp your bra, and Neil leans back ever so slightly to give you the space to move. That is, until your tits are exposed, and his body is glued against yours once more. The feeling of his hardening cock pressing up against your ass sends heat into your core, and you instinctively clench your thighs together. Of course, this catches his attention.
âAh, so you are hiding something.â
He wraps his arms around you, steering the two of you over to the mirror he hung on the wall next to his ridiculous little costume rack. You watch your own flushed expression as his hand slips between your legs to let his fingers trace over your already wet folds. With a groan, you try to avert your eyes before he corrects you with a rough grope of your breast.
âNo. Eyes on yourself. I want you to see the guilt on your face while I search you.â
Reluctantly, your eyes return to the mirror, just in time for him to plunge a finger into your velvety pussy. Your lips part, and as much as youâd like to keep quiet, your resolve crumbles immediately when he finds that sweet spot inside of you. Within minutes, the office fills up with the sounds of your pleasure and the obscene squelching of his fingers in your wet cunt. And heâs thorough in his search, quickly working you up from one finger to three, making your toes curl against the checkered floor. For a moment, he drives you up to that delightful edge, only to pull his fingers out of you at the last second.
You donât have the capacity to complain when he lifts his hand towards the light, showing off his glistening digits. Both of you are entranced by the sight, and Neil lets out a soft wheeze before he licks his fingers clean.
âYeah, I made up my mind. Get over to the desk and bend over.â
âI have a boyfriend,â you whine, turning your head to give him your biggest puppy dog eyes.
âWell, you shouldâve thought about it before you stole from me. Losing those rare tapes was a financial disaster for me. Iâm risking this store. And Iâm not gonna do it without something in return.â He finishes his sentence with a light smack to your ass which only manages to get you even more riled up. Itâs hard to disagree with him when he knows just how to get you going.
Neil drags you back over to the desk, angling the camera in just the right way before he hurriedly tears his clothes off completely. The sight of his urgency makes your chest fill with butterflies, but you still need to protest. You have to!
âI donât usually do this⌠what if my boyfriend finds out?â
âThatâs one more reason to behave. You wouldnât want him to see this little clip, right?â he asks, although the question is entirely rhetorical. Youâd love to feel guilty, but you canât bring yourself to it.
His hands run from your shoulders down to your hips, kneading your flesh with the attentiveness of a potter crafting a masterpiece, and he leans over you to place open-mouthed kisses down your spine. You shiver, drawing your bottom lip between your teeth to stifle the noises that are threatening to escape your mouth. With a quick movement, Neil reaches under your knee to guide your leg on top of the desk, and you let out a soft sigh when you can feel your arousal rolling down the inside of your thigh as he spreads you open with two fingers.
âYou know⌠nice girls wouldnât get this wet in situations like these. Then again, youâre a filthy thief, so youâre the furthest thing from a good girl.â
Neil wraps one arm around your waist, pulling you back against his chest so he can latch back onto the side of your neck, sucking and biting while he uses his other hand to guide the tip of his cock against your drooling entrance. His naked skin against yours fills your head with need, and you press up against him a little more to feel him more closely as he slowly pushes inside your velvety cunt. Both of you let out a hiss, and Neil follows it up with a needy whimper as he stills for a moment.
âFuck⌠oh fuck,â he breathes, causing your lips to twitch up in subtle amusement. Neilâs hand shakes as he adjusts the camera, making sure to get everything in frame, and in this moment, you clench around him on purpose, causing him to moan right into your ear. âJesus Christ, donât do that ââ
The slap to your ass is meant to punish you, but itâs doing the exact opposite, and you let him know this by moaning his name. His lips return to your pulse as he pushes his cock deeper into you, stretching you so perfectly that it sends goosebumps over your skin. Or maybe itâs because of his warm breath on your ear. Or his hands diligently kneading your tits. The cocktail of heated touches and sensations is literally making you feel drunk.
âYour cock feels so good,â you whine, causing him to suck in a sharp breath at the praise.
âYeah?â he chuckles, bottoming out inside of you before he starts to set a slow, sensual rhythm. âYouâre such a depraved little slut⌠getting off on your punishment. If only your boyfriend knew.â
Neil rolls his hips against yours, drawing a moan from both of you that would fit perfectly on the set of a porno. Maybe youâre hamming it up a little to feed his ego. But that isnât very hard to do when he fills you up so deliciously, making you wetter with every thrust.
Youâre already starting to feel breathless when he slowly speeds up, drilling into your dripping pussy with even more fervor. Words are starting to become a little difficult, but you try your best anyway. âYouâre better than him. SO much better ââ
Your reward is a second smack â aimed at your chest this time.
âYouâre damn right I am,â he groans, sucking another hickey into your skin and adding to the little necklace of bruises heâs been placing around your neck. âSuck these for me, will you?â
Your eyebrows furrow in confusion, but it doesnât last long when he brings his fingers up to your mouth, and you eagerly latch onto his digits, still faintly tasting yourself from earlier. You suck them down to the knuckle, running your tongue in between them in a way that makes him groan and pound your cunt even harder. Once his fingers are sufficiently coated in your saliva, he pulls them free from your lips and reaches between your legs to rub your clit.
The one leg youâve been standing on threatens to give out immediately, but he holds you up with his other arm, and gently guides your hands into place to better support yourself on the desk. Neil nuzzles his face into your hair, breathing heavily against the shell of your ear.
âIf you promise not to steal ever again, I might let you cum on my cock.â
His words are intercepted by quiet grunts and whimpers, and you find yourself agreeing pretty quickly, blabbering out promise after promise.
âIâll never â never steal again! I swear, I swear, I swear, please! Please, please let me cum â!â
Youâre almost not recognizing your own voice due to the desperately needy tone thatâs laced through your pleading, but Neil doesnât mind. Quite the opposite, really, because you can feel his thrusts picking up in intensity. He rewards your obedience by rubbing your clit a little faster, and you have to bite your knuckle as to not cry out his name. Fuck, itâs only noon and youâre approaching your release at breakneck speed.
âFuck⌠I â Iâm close,â you breathe, turning your head to look at him from over your shoulder. His teeth are back in your neck as he kisses and bites at your skin, and his voice sounds strained as he answers you.
âGo ahead⌠let go for me. If only your boyfriend knew, hm?â
Thatâs it. Your orgasm rips through you, and you let out a whine as you claw at the surface beneath you. Neil is generous enough to let you ride out your climax, but you can tell how impatient he is when he suddenly pulls out, swallowing heavily.
âOn your back.â He doesnât have to tell you twice. Itâs a little awkward, but you manage to scramble and reposition yourself, lying back against the desk and looking up at him with flushed cheeks and tousled hair. Neil is in the same state, licking his lips and swallowing dryly as he guides his cock back into your cunt, aided by his thumb on the base of his length.
âFuck⌠how can you still be this tight? Shit, FUCKâŚâ Heâs cursing and muttering under his breath, having half a brain to readjust the still rolling camera as to not miss a single second. His hands guide your legs around his waist, and he leans over you, staring at you through blown out pupils that clash against the vibrant intensity of his ocean gaze. His pretty face is red, and sweat beads on his forehead, causing his hair to stick to his skin. Without thinking, you reach up to push it back, causing both of you to still for a second before Neil finds his tone again.
âMâgonna fill you up⌠and send you back home to your boyfriend with a creampie in that pretty cunt. Alright? Alright.â
You can only nod in response, hearing your own racing heartbeat in your ears along with his continued grunts and moans. His hands on you are gentle, but his thrusts definitely arenât as he pounds you against the desk. Neilâs hips smack against yours, causing every novelty item around the two of you to tremble along to your feverish rhythm. You tilt your head back but he goes after you, finally capturing your lips in a hungry kiss that heâs been trying to hold back from the entire time. But now that heâs rapidly approaching his own climax, the self-restraint is completely out of the window.
Your tongues clash, and you moan into his mouth when his hands find yours, linking your fingers together. Neilâs lips faintly taste of iced coffee as he licks against your tongue, and your grip on his hands tightens when his movements start to become erratic.
Your lips stay locked the entire time, even as he lets out a guttural groan when he finishes inside of you, thrusting into you a few more times to push it in as deep as possible. Finally, he stills and pulls away from you, unable to resist stealing one last peck from your swollen lips. Youâre still breathing heavily as his hands roam over your body once more, relishing the feeling of your skin beneath his fingertips. Now that he has material on you and you promised not to steal again, heâs gentle. Almost too gentle, and you have to clear your throat to snap him out of it.
Neil catches himself, blinking down at you with soft eyes while he wipes some sweat off his brow. Thereâs a subtle twitch in his lips that tells you that heâd love to keep touching you, but heâs aware of the setting youâre in. Almost reluctantly, he pulls out of you to let you retrieve your clothes. While youâre getting dressed, he checks the camera and stops the recording before he speaks up.
âYouâre free to go, then. You know what happens if I catch you stealing again, right?â
The question prompts you to nod in response, and you mumble out a âyesâ as you pull your top back over your head. Once Neil confiscates the VHS from your purse, youâre free to exit the store on trembling legs, cringing a little at the feeling of your combined fluids leaking into your underwear. But God, this heist was worth it.
INT. YOUR PLACE â LIVING ROOM â DAY
As expected, the house is quiet when you get home, and you let out a deep, satisfied sigh as you throw yourself onto the couch to decompress for a moment.
Not even 20 minutes pass until the front door opens, and you hear familiar footsteps. A lazy smile spreads over your face, and you sit up, watching you boyfriend as he kicks off his shoes and throws his jacket over the coat rack on the wall. He makes his way over, leaning down to press a sweet kiss to your lips, and your vision is filled by ocean eyes and faint freckles. Neil chuckles softly, placing the camera onto the coffee table before he sinks down on the couch next to you and pulls you close. âIâm glad Lucien agreed to take over the rest of the day.â You hum in agreement, closing your eyes when he brushes his fingers through your hair to massage your scalp.
âI think that was our best one yet.â
FIN.

A Fresh Start - Stardew Valley Fanfiction
Pairings: OC x Shane, OC x Alex
Warnings: themes of depression, alcoholism, suicide and close relative loss.
Chapter 1 - The Farm
1st day of Spring. It was a sunny morning. The almost empty bus pulled to a stop as Suzy shook her sister awake.
"Mmm... Already there?" Stacy asked.
"Yeah. We better hurry, the bus driver ain't looking too happy." Suzy responded.
It was fair enough. They did make the poor guy drive almost 6 hours straight in order to get to Stardew Valley.
They gathered their bags and hopped off the bus, as it made a hasty exit. Someone was waiting for them at the bus stop.
"Hello! You two must be Suzy and Stacy, right?" A woman with ginger hair asked.
"I'm Robin, the local carpenter. Mayor Lewis sent me here to show you the way to your new home." Stacy let out a small yawn. "He's there right now, just tidying things up for your arrival. Hey-, let me help you two with that."
Robin took the bags Suzy and Stacy were carrying. Both protested:
"Oh, no- please, let me handle that!" Suzy said.
"Ah- please let me carry atleast some of it, Mrs. Robin." Said Stacy, snapping out of her drowsy trance.
Robin chuckled. "Don't worry! Just follow me. The farm's just over here."
Despite their protests, Robin carried their luggage through a little dirt path that led into an overgrown land to their left - Yoba, overgrown wouldn't even begin to describe it - and a farmhouse to their right. An older man wearing brown suspenders was waiting for them at the porch.
"Ah! Stacy and Suzy, the new farmers!" Said the man, with a wide grin. " Welcome! I'm Lewis, Mayor of Pelican Town. You know, everyone's been asking about you two. It's quite a big deal to have new people moving in!"
"So you're going to live in your grandfather's old cottage... It's a good house; very 'rustic.' " The Mayor continued.
"That's one way to put it." Said Robin, with a chuckle. "Crusty would be a little more apt, though."
"Don't listen to her! She's just trying to sell you her services." Said Lewis, rolling his eyes at the comment. All Robin responded with was a slight "hmph!".
"Anyways, you must be tired from your trip. You two should get some rest. You can introduce yourselves to the townsfolk tomorrow." Completed Lewis.
"Okay. Thanks for the help. Nice meeting you two!" Said Stacy, offering a handshake to each of them before they parted ways.
A sleep deprived Suzy muttered something under her breath, which couldn't really be made out as her sister led her towards the inside of the house. The exhaustion was reeeally catching up to her now.
Suzy made her way to one of the beds, going face first into the one to their left.
"You should have slept on the bus, you fool." Stacy said, teasingly.
"Mmpphhmm..." It was probably supposed to be some snarky retort, but Suzy's face was now buried in the pillow and nothing could be made out. Stacy almost burst out laughing as she placed the covers over her sister.
"Good night, Suzy."
"Night."
Stacy brought in the luggage previously left on the porch, and started sorting out what little they had with them. Few clothes, some old photos and a little bit of money. It wouldn't last long.
She sighed. "No one said this was gonna be easy." Stacy thought, looking at an old childhood picture of the two of them at a playground.
We'll have to buy seeds and prep the land...
Just thinking about it made her tired. She laid down on the bed to her right.
Take it one step at a time. We get there when we get there.
Soon enough, both were asleep.

Hey remember when I said I'd post writing yesterday? I forgot about Full Comic Friday. So here it is now!! Here's Dual Identity Dysphoria!
Lewis was an average man on a good day. On an average day, he was slightly below average. He was weak looking and rather scrawny. He was the kind of guy who never put any care into his appearance. He had tangled, greasy hair and wore nothing but graphic t-shirts underneath oversized hoodies. He was the kind of guy who stayed up late in the night and slept till noon. He had very few friends, very solitary hobbies, and didn't know how to talk to women to save his life. He also had a deep secret he kept closely guarded.Â
Each afternoon, he'd crawl out of bed, directly into the bathroom. He'd shower and shave and moisturize, all while trying to avoid looking in the mirror. He didn't like the thing that looked back at him. He didn't like the shape of its cheekbones, or how sharp its jaw was, or the lump in its throat. They didn't look right to him. They didn't fee right. He'd walk away looking rather patchy and spotty, as it's hard to shave without a mirror.
After that, he'd move back to his room to get dressed. He'd pull a shirt and a pair of jogging pants out of his clean-ish pile in the center of the floor. He'd grab one of his two black hoodies from the closet and throw it over top. The whole outfit probably needed a wash, but he wasn't going to leave the house today so it was fine. He made sure not to open his closet too wide when doing this. He didn't want to see what was inside. It wasn't time yet.
Lewis worked a nice remote job, meaning he'd get to lounge around on the couch while typing out some writeups or filing some digital paperwork or whatever else his boss emailed him to do. It was easy, it paid well, and he didn't have to talk to anyone. It wasn't very fulfilling, but he liked it.Â
On his lunch break, he'd throw open the pantry and pull whatever he could find out. Macaroni, instant ramen, canned soup. Nothing was too high class for him (unless it took more than fifteen minutes to make)!
When his half hour lunch was over, he'd come back to find a new email from his boss with a new menial task for him to do. Which he would, without fail. He was a star employee, just as long as he didn't have to send any emails of his own.Â
When he finally clocked out, he'd crack open his freezer and find something to have for dinner. His favourites included frozen pizza, frozen lasagna, and dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets. Sometimes, if he was feeling particularly adventurous, he'd try to make something more complex, like scrambled eggs. It didn't work out well most times, as he struggled with cracking eggs. They were so small and delicate, requiring the perfect application of force to crack the shell. Without enough force, their shell remains unharmed, leaving the egg relatively unchanged. Too much force would shatter the shell, destroying the egg and the nice comfortable life it had worked so hard to achieve. He didn't like when he tried too much force. It scared him.Â
After dinner, he would jump back on the couch and flick on Supernova, his favourite sci-fi show. He liked seeing all the colourful alien worlds, and all the equally colourful people living on them. He'd typically watch for at least three hours, catching the newest episodes or watching reruns if there weren't any new ones out yet. Lewis had seen the reruns a thousand times already. But there was nothing wrong with watching them again. They made him feel comfortable. And he loved staying in his comfort zone, at least until his show was done anyways.
After he had his sci-fi fix for the day, Lewis would go back to his room and open his closet. It was time. The closet was originally designed to be a reach in closet, and still looked like one from the outside, but Lewis had refurbished it to be a walk in. Just behind the door was a rack of shirts and sweaters, hiding the deeper reaches of the closet. Lewis would brush them too the side and walk in. He'd quickly and quietly close the door behind him. He lived alone, but he still felt weird going in a secret closet with an open door.Â
Inside the closet sat a mannequin torso and a separate mannequin head beneath a bright spot light. It proudly displayed what appeared to be a padded leotard made of rugged leather. The pads were especially thick in the hips and the chest, making them look particularly round. It was a maroon colour, with very bright red lace around the edges. In the center was a bright red spider web, stitched elegantly into the outfit. Even though it had been hand made and hand stitched, the leotard looked professionally done. On the head was a wig with shoulder length hair, a pretty bubblegum pink colour. The mannequins sat atop a chest of drawers and across from a rather large mirror. The spotlight showered the whole scene in a golden light, amplified by the mirror.Â
Lewis ripped off his greasy clothes, throwing them in a heap on the floor. He couldn't get them off fast enough. He hated them. He avoided the mirror at all costs. He couldn't look in it yet. The reflected light from the mirror cast Lewis' shadow against the wall. He didn't like it's outline.Â
He walked over to the chest of drawers and opened the top drawer. Inside were an assortment of medical supplies. A first aid kit sat open next to rolls of gauze, an alcohol based disinfectant, and way more rolls of medical tape than any normal person would need. Lewis grabbed one of the rolls and shut the drawer. Slowly and carefully, Lewis reached down to what was between his legs, tucking it back and taping it in place. When he was done, he returned the tape to the first drawer, before opening the second and retrieving a pair of pink leggings. Lewis slowly put them on, one leg after the other, ensuring they were on tight and flat. He put on a thin and breathable tank top shirt, made of nylon. He slowly lifted the leotard off the mannequin before slipping it over his shirt. It felt nice. Tight in all the right spots, with just the right amount of padding to sit on his frame.
The shadow on the wall was no longer as harsh. It seemed much rounder, with wider hips and a thinner waist. Lewis liked it, but they still wouldn't look in the mirror. They still weren't ready.Â
Lewis opened the second drawer again. They pulled out a pair of fingerless red fishnet arm sleeves and slid their arms inside. Finally, they placed the wig on their head and turned to look in the mirror.
This was her favourite part. She loved the big reveal every time she saw it. Her hair was stunning, flowing down the sides of her head and resting softly on her bare shoulders. Her suit looked wonderful, giving her the hips and chest she desperately wished she was born with. Lewis was no longer in the room. He was gone. He had been replaced with The Seamstress. And it was time for her to go out on patrol.
There it is! I hope you liked it! Today's comic strip will be moved to tomorrow and Science Sunday will be swapped with a poll about writing. Hopefully next week will be back to normal schedule!

Bedtime Stories
Penny (Stardew) x They/Them Reader
A/N: Woo! With this, I have completed a fic for all the Stardew Bachelorettes! Hope yaâll are ready for Penny time! Word Count: 5,618
(Y/n) stretched their arms way above their head, reveling in the pulling of their back muscles and the dull crack of their spine. They had been out foraging all day and their pack was full of blackberries, mushrooms and nuts. A very good haul.
They shivered a bit as another breeze blew through. The skies had only gone dark about an hour ago, but (Y/n) was ready to call it a night and turn in to their warm and cozy farmhouse.
They walked up the dirt path past Marnieâs ranch to their farm, smiling when they saw the light of their house in the distance. The children must have been giving Penny a hard time tonight. Usually theyâd be asleep before (Y/n) got home, but they could get restless on occasion.
As soon as (Y/n)âs boots thudded against the wooden stairs, they could hear excited cries from within, and soon a small head poked out from behind the front door before swinging it fully outward.
(Y/n) flung their arms out to catch the small body that flew into their legs, soon joined by a smaller, more clumsy one.
âYou two are up rather late, you arenât giving your mom a hard time, are you?â (Y/n) asked their children.
âMommy said we could wait for you if we ate all our veggies at dinner so we did. We did good so weâll grow up to be strong farmers like you!â The older of the two exclaimed.
âOh yeah?â (Y/n) grinned.
âYeah!â The younger child shrilled.
âWell, now that Iâm here, itâs time for bed isnât it?â
A duet of displeased noises met (Y/n)âs ears but they quickly devolved into giggles when the farmer attacked them with tickles. Once the children were disarmed, (Y/n) slung them over their shoulders and bounced them into the house, meeting the loving eyes their spouse gave them from the couch.
Penny sat in a pile of rumpled blankets no doubt put there by their rambunctious children. In her lap was a book of fairy tales that usually served her well when bedtime came around but tonight it seemed it was not enough.
âHi, love. Welcome home.â Penny smiled sweetly, getting up to meet (Y/n) halfway. She hugged them around the middle before lightening their load by taking the smaller child off their hands.
âHi sweetheart, how was your day?â The farmer asked, setting down their eldest child so they could remove their bag and boots.
âIt went well. The children were so diligent with their studies. I was very impressed.â Penny said, making sure the kids were aware of how proud she was of their work.
âThatâs great! Iâm really proud of you two.â (Y/n) praised their children while they glowed with pride.
âSo we can stay up late and watch tv?â The eldest asked hopefully, the parents merely laughed at the suggestion, making the children pout.
âAfraid not, sleep is very important and I think now would be a good time to hit the hay.â (Y/n) said, already trying to corral the kids into their bedroom.
âNot yet! We want a story at least!â The younger proclaimed, agreement was quickly voiced by their older sibling. Rarely it seemed they could come to a consensus so quickly.
âOh? Well, I suppose one story wouldnât hurt.â (Y/n) agreed. âGo brush your teeth first, please.â
The children toppled over each other, trying to get to the sink first so they could rush back to the living room.
âThey have so much energy.â Penny remarked with a content sigh, leaning into (Y/n)âs side.
âNo kidding,â (Y/n) chuckled, rubbing Pennyâs arm, âI could have really used the extra help in my first year of living here. Now Iâve got auto-feeders and sprinklers. A little late for fall, but I suppose they could help with the spring planting, maybe that would slow them down a bit.â
âShhh, itâll be a long winter and I donât need to hear, âis it spring yet?â, everyday before then.â Penny playfully warned.
âYour wish is my command.â (Y/n) nodded, pulling Penny down onto the couch to cuddle with her, making the teacher hum with delight and shyly steal a quick kiss.
A few minutes later, two bouncy young children crawled over their parents and wiggled into their sides and under the blankets with happy giggles.
âAlright kiddos, which one?â (Y/n) asked once they were all settled, patting the heavy book on their lap.
âWe donât want one of those stories tonight.â The eldest said.
âYou donât?â Penny blinked, confused by declaration.
âWe want to know how you met each other and got married.â The eldest explained, the younger nodded along.
âItâs a long story kids.â (Y/n) said. They may have been trying to dissuade the children, but there really was a lot to cover. Seasons and seasons worth.
âWhatâs so long about it?â The younger child asked. âDidnât you just know you liked each other so you got married?â
âPeople donât get married right after they meet each other, honey.â Penny gently corrected.
(Y/n) definitely had a, âwell, not usually anywayâ, kind of look on their face but the warning look Penny gave them convinced (Y/n) to keep their mouth shut.
âOh, I still wanna know though.â
âMe too!â
â(Y/n)...â Penny called upon her spouse.
âOkay, an abridged history, how âbout?â (Y/n) shrugged.
The children seemed content with that, once Penny explained to them what abridged meant, and looked to (Y/n) expectantly with shining eyes.
âOkay, it all startedââ
âOnce upon a time!â The youngest screeched, making everyone wince.
âInside voices, dear.â Penny reminded.
âSorry, but the story has to start with once upon a time.â
âItâs not a fairytale, you know.â The older said.
âItâs alright,â (Y/n) interjected with a grin, âit feels enough like one being married to such a sweet person.â
Penny turned away and blushed, a small bashful smile working the corners of her lips upward.
âOnce upon a time...â (Y/n) began again, much to their youngest childâs delight.
***
âOh my Yoba, this place is a mess.â (Y/n) groaned.
They had kept a brave face for Robin and Mayor Lewis, but now that they were gone, they voiced how overwhelmed they felt freely. They looked over the overgrown lot that was supposed to be the farm their grandfather had left for them.
âWhat if this was a mistake? Am I doing the right thing? I donât want to crawl back to Joja but...â (Y/n) growled, thwacking the dirt hard with their hoe, âNo! I just got here, I canât quit yet.â They said, strengthening their resolve.
After a few hours of alternating between being proud with their progress and wanting to cry because there was so much left to do, (Y/n) decided they wanted to check out town. They just really needed to freshen up first.
To their dismay, but not surprisingly, the old farmhouse didnât have indoor plumbing, but they didnât worry because they knew there was a bathhouse in the mountains they could use.
âWhen I get paid, the first thing Iâm gonna do is contract Robin to build a bathroom. I hope sheâs as savvy with plumbing as she is with carpentry.â They mumbled to themself as they walked up the mountain path.
Entering the bathhouse, the space seemed void of life, the only sounds being the steady drip of water over the tiled floor. (Y/n) claimed a vacant locker and took a shower. After the day they had, it was the best shower they had ever had.
Once clean, (Y/n) decided theyâd spoil themself and swim around in the heated pool for a bit before heading back to the farm. They put on their swimsuit and headed on in. Expecting to be alone, they hummed and sang as they made their way to the main room, enjoying the way their voice reverberated off of the walls and echoed back into their ears.
âUm, hello.â
âWah!â
(Y/n) nearly slipped on the wet floor from the shock. A woman with vibrant, orange hair was sitting in one of the near corners of the pool. She seemed to shrink into herself under (Y/n)âs wide gaze.
âOh wow,â (Y/n) laughed awkwardly, embarrassment flooding their tone, âI, uh, didnât realize anyone else was here, sorry you had to hear that.â
âItâs alright,â the woman smiled albeit, a bit tightly it seemed. âI was thinking about getting out anyway.â
âYou donât have to leave!â (Y/n) fumbled with the towel in their hands, âI promise to be quiet and give you your space. Itâll be like Iâm not even here.â
They skittered across the tiled floor and slid into the opposite side of the bath, giving the woman her space.
A few painfully awkward minutes passed. (Y/n) leaned over the pool edge and counted the nearby tiles, the bricks on the wall... anything to occupy them until the other occupant left or a non-suspicious amount of time passed and they could leave themself.
âWho... who are you?â The woman asked, finally breaking the silence.
(Y/n) craned their head to face her, eager to introduce themself and hopefully make a better impression.
âIâm (Y/n). I just moved in. I live at the old farmhouse just west of town so youâll probably see me around from time to time.â
âOh, I see,â the stiffness of the strangers shoulders seemed to lessen, âWell, Iâm Penny. Itâs nice to meet you.â
(Y/n) grinned brightly as they swam closer to Penny, all previous worries forgotten. âItâs nice to meet you too, Penny! I hope we will be great friends.â (Y/n) suddenly splashed the water beneath their hand as another thought popped into their mind. âHey, do you have any favorite vegetables or fruits?â
âUm,â Penny shrunk back, a bit intimidated by the farmerâs sudden approach, âOh, I donât know...â
âSurely thereâs something, donât be shy.â (Y/n) encouraged.
âI, I like melon?â Penny more asked than told. Her back digging into the edge of the pool a bit uncomfortably.
âMelon,â (Y/n) nodded sagely, backing up a bit from Pennyâs personal space. âYeah, I could do that! Youâll have to wait for summer though, is that okay?â
âWait?â
âYeah, I can start planting melon in the summer. Iâd do it sooner, but the seeds wonât take. Iâll be sure to give you the first one I harvest though!â
âYou really donât have to do that,â Penny waved her hands in front of her.
âI insist.â (Y/n) heaved themself out of the warm water, âMan, Penny, I have to thank you. Youâve inspired me to get back to work! I got to see if thereâs anything else I can clean up around the farm before nightfall. Iâll see you around!â
âOkay, bye...â Penny watched them jog into the changing room, gasping when the farmer slipped on the tiles but continued on their merry way. She wasnât sure what to make of the new addition to Pelican Town, but they seemed kind enough.
***
The next time Penny had seen (Y/n) was during one of her lessons with Vincent and Jas. She had been reading about the history of the valley when Vincent had waved excitedly at someone behind her back. Thinking it was just Sam or Jodi, Penny attempted to continue on with her lesson but she soon came to a stop when Vincent took to excitedly calling after the passerby.
âHey, farmer! Good morning!â Vincent yelled.
âReally now Vincent,â Penny lightly scolded as she held her finger over the paragraph she had been reading, âyou need to focus on the lesson.â
âSorry Miss. Penny.â Vincent apologized. âBut I see Farmer (Y/n). Theyâre so cool.â
âTheyâre probably busyââ
âHi, Vincent! And a hello to you Jas and Penny.â A friendly voice cut in.
Penny looked up from her spot in the grass and watched (Y/n) approach, their arms full of daffodils.
âWhatâs going on here?â They asked once they were standing next to the group.
âSchool.â Vincent answered matter-of-factly. âMiss Penny is reading about history.â
âOh, I didnât know you were a teacher Penny. Thatâs really neat. Iâm sorry for interrupting your lesson.â (Y/n) said, turning their attention to Penny.
âItâs alright, you didnât know. I apologize if Vincent has distracted you from your own work.â Penny politely stated in kind.
âNo worries, Iâve just been foraging around the valley. Leah posted a request for some dandelions but I couldnât seem to find any today. I got a whole bunch of daffodils though. Would you three like to take some off my hands?â
âWow, thanks!â Vincent quickly grabbed one before Penny could even think about declining.
Jas shyly took one for herself, still a little intimidated by the fresh face. Sheâd been growing a little more used to them though, thanks to Marnieâs encouragement.
âA flower, milady?â (Y/n) asked Penny again, sporting a warm smile that made the teacher feel like the heat of the day was starting to get to her.
âThank you, this looks special.â She said, gently cupping the flower in her hands.
âYouâre welcome. Itâs no melon, but rest assured that summer will be upon us before you know it,â the farmer declared before spotting Willy in the distance. âOh! Hey guys, I gotta go catch Willy to tell him about all the chubs I caught yesterday. It was good talking to you, see you all later!â They said before jogging off.
âBye (Y/n)!â Vincent waved.
âBye...â Penny and Jas said together, much more subdued than the young boy.
Penny watched (Y/n) until they disappeared into the saloon before turning back to her book. Her face tinged pink as she twirled her daffodil in one hand and picked up where she left off.
***
Summer rain pelted the metal of the trailer, thumping loudly with each drop, but Penny blocked it out easily as she read all cozy in her bed. Occasionally she would snap up a bit of freshly cut melon from the Tupperware resting on her nightstand and smile to herself.
(Y/n) had made good on their promise and had been pushing their fresh melons onto Penny since midsummer. Another sweet bite and Penny sighed pleasantly whilst marking her page with the daffodil (Y/n) had given her in the spring, now a dried and fragile makeshift bookmark.
The farmer was so warm, gentle. Better than anything her books could come up with and yet they somehow existed in her reality despite being too good to be true.
Since their somewhat uncomfortable origin, Penny could not have been more happy to have encountered them in the bathhouse that day. Even after getting to know each other better, even after (Y/n) had seen the messy state her mother kept the trailer in, they never treated her any differently.
âPenny,â the teacher jolted at the sudden knock and the rasp of her motherâs voice through the door, âIâm heading to the saloon. You want anything?â
âNo thanks, mom.â Penny sighed. âI was thinking of making dinner myself tonight.â
âAlright honey. Iâll be back late.â Pam informed, her footsteps rocked the trailer slightly and the rickety front door closed loudly, signaling the older womanâs departure. At least now that the bus had been fixed (by who else but the resident hero farmer) her mother had less time to spend drinking.
Penny scooted out of bed and headed to the kitchenette and turned on the stove, putting a large pot on the flame. She had been trying to make something to give (Y/n) in thanks. Something for all the good theyâve been doing for the town and for treating her so kindly.
She began her experimental stew, pouring whatever she had on hand into the pot that she thought would taste good. She was so absorbed in her creation that she almost missed the knocking on the trailer door.
Penny turned off the heat and went to answer the door thinking it was probably just Vincent with another excuse why he couldnât return his homework in time. She was surprised to see (Y/n) waiting outside.
â(Y/n), hello,â Penny greeted, beckoning the farmer out of the rain, âplease come in, itâs pouring buckets out there. You must be soaked.â
âIâm okay, itâll take more than a little rain to take me out.â (Y/n) smiled as they stepped into the trailer. âHi Penny, hope Iâm not interrupting anything.â
âNot at all. I was just cooking.â Penny bashfully admitted. So much for the surprise.
âOh thatâs cool. Whatâre you making?â
âOh just some stew, I was actually hoping to give it to you,â Penny blushed, âfor all the good youâve done for the town.â
âAw, thatâs very sweet of you Penny. You didnât have to do that.â (Y/n) said. They could feel their heart beat pick up in tempo at the gesture.
âI wanted to. Here, have a taste.â Penny presented a ladle full of soup to (Y/n), her blush grew warmer as the farmer leaned in close to take a taste before pulling themself to stand straight once more.
(Y/n)âs smile tightened the more they chewed, sweat dotted their forehead.
âAre you alright?â Penny asked, watching the farmer continue to chew.
âMhmm.â (Y/n) squeaked, giving Penny a shaky thumbs up. Then they swallowed none too easily. âWow,â they breathed, well, more like gasped, âthat sure was something Penny. Thank you for sharing.â
âIs it really that bad?â Penny frowned, disappointed.
Immediately (Y/n) jumped into action, waving their arms, âIt wasnât bad at all! I was chewing so long because it tasted so good, I didnât want it to end!â
Penny gave the farmer a doubtful look before looking down at the leftover stew in her ladle and raising it to her own lips.
âWait, Pennyââ
âOh dear, that is vile...â Penny gagged. She hardly had so much as a sip before tossing the rest back into the pot. âIâm sorry, (Y/n). I should have tested it first...â
âHey, itâs okay! Youâre learning. It took me a lot of practice to learn how to cook too.â They assured. âIf you want to come over sometime I could teach you a thing or two.â
âI wouldnât want to interrupt. Youâre always so busy...â Penny said, already contemplating how she was going to get rid of her hot, liquid garbage.
âYou wouldnât be interrupting anything. All I really need to do is water the crops and feed the chickens. I can take it easy every once in awhile. Besides, Iâm always looking to spend time with you anyway so... yeah,â They rubbed the back of their neck.
âReally?â
âYeah, so if you ever want to plan something... Iâd really like that.â
âOkay.â Penny nodded, nervously fiddling with her hands. âIâd like that too. Very much.â
âCool! Nice, yes.â (Y/n) practically sparkled at the affirmation. âWhen do you want to meet up?â
âIs Tuesday fine?â
âTuesday is great! This is so exciting!â Just as the farmer pumped their fists over their head, a loud burst of thunder shook the trailer. âWow, itâs a monster out there.â
âYes, you should stay for awhile. At least until it calms down a bit... movie?â Penny suggested, gesturing to the little DVD player in the corner.
âThat sounds like a great idea,â (Y/n) followed, their hand reaching into their bag, âI almost forgot I came to give you more melon!â
âYou spoil me, really. How much melon do you think one girl can eat. Iâm still working on the last one you gave me.â Penny giggled quietly.
âFall will be here before long. Best to enjoy them while you still can.â They half-joked, sliding into the seat of the booth.
Penny slid into the seat beside them and popped open the DVD player. Maybe the melon season was coming to an end, but at least the farmer who planted them was here to stay.
***
By mid fall, Penny and (Y/n) were nearly inseparable. Any free time they had they usually spent together cooking in (Y/n)âs farmhouse, relaxing in the bathhouse or curling up with some books or other media.
The day was unusually warm for fall and Penny decided to treat Jas and Vincent to a picnic in the Cindersap Forest for all their hard work. While they ate and went through their lesson, Penny saw the farmer and waved them over without a second thought. She was simply thrilled to see them and thought their presence in the woods must have been fate.
â(Y/n), wonderful timing seeing you here. I was just teaching the children about natural resources. Could I trouble you to talk about how natural resources are involved in farming?â Penny asked once the farmer came up to them.
âSure, Iâd love to!â (Y/n) nodded.
Penny stared off dreamily at (Y/n)âs side as they explained what they knew about the valleyâs resources while wondering how she could be so lucky as to know them. Once (Y/n) had explained a large amount of their process, Vincent raised his hand.
âQuestion, Vincent?â Penny asked, impressed that the boy seemed so invested in the lesson.
âYeah, are you dating anyone Farmer (Y/n)?â Vincent asked.
âUh, no. No I am not.â (Y/n) laughed, rubbing the back of their neck.
âVincent!â Penny said, aghast.
âWhat?â The young boy questioned.
âYou canât just ask people stuff like that, Vincent.â Jas spoke up. âMy auntie Marnie told me that when I asked her if Mayor Lewis was her boyfriend.â
(Y/n) and Penny gave each other an awkward side glance. After the incident with the bush, (Y/n) had to tell someone about it, and Penny had been the unfortunate mock therapist in that scenario.
âAh, well, no harm done.â (Y/n) laughed. âAny questions related to the topic of natural resources?â
Penny observed how well (Y/n) got along with Jas and Vincent and thought they would make a wonderful parent. When the lesson had concluded and the children were playing by the river, Penny couldnât help but ask (Y/n) if they had ever thought about having a family before.
âEvery once in awhile I do. I think it would be nice. It would make the farm more lively at least.â
And with that admission, Penny couldnât help but hope that one day, (Y/n) might see her as a suitable partner to share their life with.
***
Winter was, well, cold.
But Penny was glad for it because there were no crops (Y/n) needed to attend to and they were therefore, more available. They spent much more time together in winter than the previous seasons.
Today, Penny was heading to the farm for another cooking lesson from (Y/n). She was getting much better with the skill. She could even get her mother to spend more nights away from the saloon with the promise of a hot meal.
Penny stepped up onto the snowy porch and knocked her gloved hand against the wooden door. She could hear clattering from within the farmhouse and waited patiently for (Y/n) to usher her in.
âPenny, hi, glad you could make it!â (Y/n) grinned as they opened the door, guiding Penny in by the waist,
âThank you for having me.â Penny flustered at the contact, despite her thick coat blocking the farmerâs touch. âWhat are we making today?â
âI thought some warm snickerdoodle cookies would be great on a cold day like this.â (Y/n) said.
âThat does sound good.â Penny nodded as she hung up her coat and stepped out of her shoes. Then she followed (Y/n) to the kitchen and they got to baking.
Before long, the smell of cinnamon and sugary goodness permeated the space and the chill of the winter air outside was long forgotten. They were just getting ready to settle in with a movie when (Y/n) excused themself for a minute to go grab something from another room. It reminded Penny how small the farmhouse used to be before (Y/n) had commissioned Robin for a few projects.
Penny nervously eyed the bag she had left at the door. Was now a good time to bring out the bouquet? Penny had been silently agonizing over it all day. She had bought it from Pierre almost on impulse, she knew who she wanted to give it too, but what if (Y/n) saw her only as a friend and wasnât looking for anything different? It was sure to make things weird between them.
âSorry to keep you waiting.â
Penny jolted in her seat as (Y/n) reappeared, something held behind their back. She quickly assured (Y/n) that it was alright and motioned them over to the couch so they could start their movie.
âWait, Penny, can I ask you something first?â The farmer asked, still standing in the stairway.
âOf course.â Penny nodded, concern seeping into her tone. âWhat is it? Is something wrong?â
âNo! No, at least, I donât think so. I just wanted to ask if you would want to... and you can always say no, you wonât hurt my feelings... okay, it might sting a little but Iâll get over itââ
â(Y/n), what is it?â Penny asked, standing up and walking over to the fumbling farmer. She had never seen them look so shaken.
The farmer seemed at a loss. Opening and closing their mouth until finally they just brought their hand out from behind their back and presented Penny with a bouquet of their own. The teacher gasped, her hands flying up to her mouth in elation and surprise.
Without saying anything Penny bounded over to the front door and opened her bag, producing her own bouquet and delighting (Y/n) to no end as she wrapped the farmer in a tight hug.
After hours of cuddling on the couch and half paying attention to their movie, Penny decided she had to get home, despite (Y/n)âs offers to have her stay over. She needed to make sure her mom didnât overdo it at the saloon.
A quick glance around the bar and she noted that Pam wasnât there. She gave Gus a polite wave before heading home. Upon arriving, she found her mother already settling into the pullout for the night and their eyes met. Pamâs eyes drifted down to the bouquet secured in Pennyâs arms and grunted.
âItâs about time.â Pam grumbled before turning over on the noisy mattress.
Penny could only smile at her motherâs gruffness before retiring to her room to quietly continue celebrating in her own space.
***
By the fall of the third year since (Y/n) had moved into town, the pair became a well established couple and it was just common knowledge to suspect if one was out and about, the other couldnât be too far off since they were practically joined at the hip.
Some of the townies had expressed worry that the farmer was shrinking off too much of their duties but in reality, the farm was a well oiled machine now and required little maintenance. The farmer had worked themself to the point of passing out on their farmhouse floor on occasion to get to this point. Money was hardly an issue anymore for the farmer who, quite literally, built their legacy on five hundred gold and a handful of parsnip seeds.
âThere you are,â Penny kissed (Y/n)âs cheek chastely as they plopped down next to her under her favorite tree, âwhere have you been?â
âJust needed to take care of something quick.â They said, leaning their head against Pennyâs shoulder.
âAnd what would that be?â
âI was talking to Robin. She had a request up.â
âAnd what did she want?â
âYou are full of questions today, sweetheart.â The farmer laughed.
âAnd you arenât being as forthcoming with information as usual. Usually, I wouldnât even have to ask before you tell me all about your adventures, big or small.â Penny pointed out, âI do believe you might be hiding something.â
âNo way!â The farmer scoffed before slouching a bit more because of the look Penny gave them, âOkay, maybe I am hiding something, but itâs a surprise. Give it a few days.â
âJust what might you be up to, hm?â Penny smiled, cupping (Y/n)âs cheek.
âYouâre a teacher,â (Y/n) laughed again, âyou should know what surprise means.â
Penny sighed before laughing along with her partner. Then the couple went in about their day and before long, the thought of (Y/n)âs surprise left her mind and she had forgotten all about it by the time Jas and Vincentâs lessons were over for the day.
A couple days later, (Y/n) had invited Penny and Pam over for lunch. It wasnât an unusual occurrence. One of the things Penny appreciated most about (Y/n) was their willingness to reach out to Pam and build a good relationship with her as well. However, what made this trip particularly extraordinary was what waited for them where their old, rundown trailer used to be.
âOh, Yoba...â Pam breathed, a hand placed heavily over her heart as she stared up at the grand looking house.
âRobin, what is this?â Penny asked, nearly as breathless as her mother and just as overwhelmed.
âI got commissioned for a community upgrade,â the carpenter smiled, âI hope you guys like it!â
âThis is too much... how can weâ who commissioned this?â Penny asked, running her fingers through her bangs.
âAnonymous donor,â Robin winked before making her way back up to the mountains, âenjoy the new house ladies.â
Penny hugged her mother while she cried and together they entered their new home, unsure how they could ever thank the donor enough. It didnât take long for the mother daughter duo to figure out the identity of the commissioner. After all, there were only so many people who could pull off such a project and have the funds necessary to complete it.
âIâm going back to (Y/n)âs!â Penny called out. It felt weird having to actually throw her voice enough for her mother to hear her across their new house.
Pam managed a wave, still a bit overwhelmed by the vast space surrounding her.
Penny practically ran to the farm, the seashell pendant her father had gifted to her mother so long ago grasped tightly in her hand. Breathing heavily, she knocked on the door and waited for the farmer to appear.
âHey Penny, did you forget a book or something? It must be good for you to run all the way over here for it.â They laughed, âcome in, do you need some waterââ
âI love you,â Penny declared, leaping into (Y/n)âs arms, âI canât believe you did that for us.â
âDid what?â (Y/n) asked, looking a bit coy.
âYou built my mom a house you wonderful busy body.â Penny said, smacking their shoulder.
âWhat? Did Robin tell? I asked her to keep it a secret.â (Y/n) pouted.
â(Y/n), it wouldnât take a genius to figure out that you were behind that project,â Penny sighed, âI donât know how to thank you.â
âYou donât need to thank me for anything. I was happy to help get the ball rolling. I love you guys and you do so much for Jas and Vincent, you deserve it. Now,â (Y/n) shifted a bit uncomfortably, âwhat exactly is digging into my back right now?â
âOh!â Penny pulled back a bit, but kept the pendant out of (Y/n)âs sight. âIâve only dreamed of doing this until I met you, itâs never felt more real, tangible. Oh my, this is nerve wracking.â Penny blushed.
âTake your time dear, breathe.â (Y/n) regarded Penny with soft eyes, rubbing her back comfortingly.
â(Y/n),â Penny spoke after a moment of collecting herself, âwill you marry me?â
Penny presented the pendant, her eyes struggling to look at the farmer directly, but when the farmer pulled her back into another tight embrace she melted into their arms like warm butter.
âYes, I love you! Yes.â The farmer cheered, their voice muffled by Pennyâs shoulder. The vibrations, and words that created them, made Penny giggle with delight.
They stumbled into the farmhouse to celebrate their engagement, basking in each otherâs company.
âI almost feel bad.â Penny suddenly stated, curled up in (Y/n)âs arms.
âHm? What for, sweetheart?â (Y/n) asked as they ran their fingers through Pennyâs hair.
âMom will be in that big house all by herself. Iâll still see her everyday though, itâs not like Iâm moving to Zuzu City... the idea of not living with her after all this time just feels odd.â
âI can understand that. Itâll take some getting used to. Just think of how nice itâll be though, when somewhere down the line, we send our kids to grandmaâs house for visits.â
âThat does sound really nice. Iâm really looking forward to starting a family with you.â
âMe too.â (Y/n) said. Then they leaned in to kiss Pennyâs nose with great care and affection.
***
âThen a couple days later, we were married in front of the whole town.â (Y/n) finished softly, looking fondly over at Penny.
âThatâs a nice story,â the eldest child yawned, âI wanna stay at grandmaâs house again soon.â
âOf course, sweetie. Weâll work something out soon.â Penny promised whilst adjusting the fast asleep younger sibling in her lap, ânow, itâs time to go to bed.â
âAlright,â The older child sighed before yawning again. âCarry me.â
(Y/n) released an amused exhale before standing and hoisting their child into their arms. Penny followed suit with the other, tucking them into their beds and kissing them goodnight.
Together, (Y/n) and Penny retired to their own room, falling into bed with tired groans.
âThose kids can be handful sometimes.â (Y/n) said, smiling all the while.
âYes, and I wouldnât want it any other way,â Penny rolled over to peck the farmer on the lips, âlove you, sleep well.â
âI love you too, sweet dreams. I canât wait to do this all again tomorrow.â
âNeither can I.â

Fic - Gus
Word Count: 4,475
Summary: Gus has a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
Notes: Thank you to @purpleandgreen13â (purpleandgreen on AO3) for coming up with this prompt, it was such a fun and inspiring one to work with! Youâre the best! ^.^
From the moment Gus woke up, he should have known that today was going to be an awful day. Water dripped from the ceiling of his room, plopping onto his forehead and waking him with a start. The rainstorm forecasted for the day had begun, revealing a leak in the roof that Gus hadnât known was there until the rain unceremoniously woke him from his slumber. After clambering out of bed in shock and confusion, Gus wiped the sleep from his eyes and looked upward as another drop of rain landed right in his eye.
âSon of a-,â Gus mumbled, giving himself a wide berth from the bed to avoid getting wet any further.
His sheets had already soaked up some of the moisture, but the last thing he needed was a soaking wet mattress. Gus rushed to the storage room to grab an empty bucket to collect as much rain water as he could until Robin could come by to fix his roof. Hopefully it wouldnât be long or else heâd be back and forth all day dumping the bucket. It was expected to rain heavily all day long.
The next sign that Gusâ day would be terrible arrived only moments later when Gus stepped on a small puddle of water that had dripped onto the floor, causing him to lose his balance and fall backward. He slammed his back hard against the footboard of his bed, causing him to yelp out in pain. His already bad back was now throbbing in pain. Wincing, Gus rose from the floor and hobbled across the room to at least change out of his wet pajamas and into something warm and dry.
Upon opening his closet, Gus reached for a plain t-shirt and his favorite orange jacket. It wasnât until the jacket was on and he reached down to zip it up that he noticed the huge rip in the sleeve of his jacket. It was likely Emily could mend it for him, but it was another rough blow to his already awful morning. Gus elected for one of his lesser preferred jackets instead.
Being awake far earlier than he was used to, Gus shuffled out of his room into the kitchen of the saloon. Usually he wouldnât wake up until almost lunch time due to being up late every night for his business, but with the rain waking him up so early, he figured he would at least fix himself a meal. It wasnât often he ate breakfast anyway, so treating himself to a complete breakfast and a glass of homemade orange juice seemed a decent enough consolation prize. Robinâs shop wouldnât even open for another twenty minutes anyway.
Gus stepped into the walk-in refrigerator in the kitchen and began pulling the ingredients he needed to make his breakfast. Once he had everything in-hand, he turned to leave and heard a high-pitched squeak. For a moment, it sounded like a mouse. It was enough of a distraction for Gus to momentarily forget where he was or what he was doing and the armful of ingredients he was carrying fell to the floor as Gus accidentally dropped them. The squeak, it turned out, came from a squeaky floorboard he had stepped on and wasnât a rodent at all. Gus almost wished it was, at least it would have justified his flustered response. Instead, all he was left with was no ingredients for breakfast and a huge mess to clean while his back was out of sorts.
It took over a half hour for Gus to completely clean up the spill, the cracked eggs seeped down into every crevice and cranny of the walk-in fridge. Not to mention, it was a very chilly ordeal to clean a mess inside of such a cold space. Gus had lost all track of time while he was cleaning the mess in the fridge and all thoughts of calling Robin to repair his roof had left his mind until the job was done. By the time he realized it, he glanced at the clock and saw that sheâd been open for fifteen minutes already. He hoped he wasnât too late.
âHello there, youâve reached the Bennetts!â Demetriusâ voice answered cheerfully when Gus finally picked up the phone to call.
âHey Demetrius, Iâm in a bit of a bind,â Gus began, getting right to his point. There was no time for pleasantries today. âThe roof of the saloon is leaking. Right over my bed, actually. Any chance Robin can head out here and fix it? Iâve got a bucket under there right now until she can make it.â
âOh no, I wish I could say she could but sheâs actually out of the house right now,â Demetrius answered apologetically. âHer parents called her first thing this morning, her father is ill and she needed to head out to help her mother.â
âSorry to hear that,â Gus replied sincerely. As unfortunate as his situation was, he really was sorry to hear that there were health issues in Robinâs family. It was a situation where Gus couldnât in all conscience be mad at Robin for being unavailable despite his desperation.
Once he hung up with Demetrius, Gus heaved a long, heavy sigh. Someone in town had to be able to help him, there was no way he could put it off. There werenât many other people in town Gus could think to ask, but he started at the top of the list and worked his way down. Sebastian seemed like a decent possibility given that his mother was the very woman Gus needed for the job, but Seb made it quite clear that he had nothing to do with her work at all. Shane was next on the list, he was actually quite the handyman, but the call went straight to voicemail. Gus had to assume he was working at Joja today and had his phone silenced. Alex at the very least was strong, but as Gus suspected he had no knowledge of how to fix a leaky roof. Gus was even desperate enough to call Lewis who had been the townâs handyman before he was mayor, but of course his old age made him too hesitant to help Gus out. Not that Gus could blame him, of course, but it was maddening how limited his options were. Heâd have to call a company in Grampleton or even in the city which would end up costing him at least triple what Robin would charge.
One very expensive phone call later, Gus managed to get an appointment with a roofer from Grampleton for 4:00pm , right when the dinner rush would be starting. As anticipated, the flat fee was already more expensive, plus additional fees for travel and late notice. Until they arrived, Gus would have to keep shuffling buckets around to catch as much water as he could.
By the time the roofer was sorted, Gus realized that there wasnât much time left until the saloon opened at noon for lunch. Having dropped a substantial amount of ingredients earlier in the morning, Gus knew a trip to Pierreâs was necessary. It wasnât far to Pierreâs store but in this rainstorm, Gus knew heâd need every protection even for such a short walk. After another trip to his room for his raincoat, rain boots, and umbrella, Gus was ready to face the elements. With his back still aching, Gus crossed town square slowly and carefully towards Pierreâs shop. The last thing he needed was to try and rush to get out of the rain and fall once more. He chuckled to himself at the thought that Doctor Harvey would commend him for choosing safety first.
The trip to Pierreâs was just as frustrating as the rest of his morning had been. It took him quite some time just to get out of his wet rain gear and Pierre snapped at him for leaving a puddle by the entrance even though it wasnât exactly something he could help in a rainstorm. Pierreâs selection wasnât great either, he was out of stock on a few ingredients that Gus needed so Gus would have to tweak his menu slightly to accommodate. He knew he would get an earful that night when Shane couldnât order pepper poppers. When Gus went to checkout, he realized heâd forgotten his money at home in his rush and had to practically beg Pierre to let him pay at a later time without having to go all the way back for his money. It wasnât until he started to remind Pierre of his own ongoing tab at the saloon, within earshot of Caroline, that Pierre quickly shushed him and agreed that Gus could stop by the following day to pay for the groceries.
The short walk home was plagued with its own difficulties. Gus had three bags of groceries and with one hand holding his umbrella, the other had to carry three full shopping bags while trying to keep them dry under the umbrella. By the time he arrived back at the saloon, his hand was aching from carrying the weight of the groceries which had gotten slightly wet despite his best efforts. Even Gus himself had gotten wet, the jacket heâd put on that morning had a drenched collar and water had gotten into his rain boots and soaked his socks through. Another change of clothes for the day.
Lunch prep went fine enough other than a small slice of a finger while chopping onions. On any other day Gus would consider it a terrible misfortune but today, it was nothing compared to everything else that had happened so far. It wasnât serious enough to warrant a visit to Doctor Harvey, thank goodness. Nothing a bandage couldnât fix. It did make the rest of his lunch prep awkward and it certainly hurt, but the pain at least distracted him a bit from his aching back.
Because of the rain, the lunch ârushâ wasnât exactly a rush at all, which was fine with Gus on a day like today. Only a few people stopped by for lunch, mostly to-go orders. Ordinarily heâd feel bored with nothing to do or worried by a lack of paying customers, but he welcomed the chance to take a break after his busy morning. His back was still aching from his fall and his finger throbbed uncomfortably under its bandage. The worst he could say about the lunch crowd was that any time a customer entered the saloon, it meant drying the rain puddles left behind in their wake once they left. Of course there was also the constant back and forth from the bar to his room to switch out buckets, a task he had to do almost every thirty minutes.
At 3:30 he could hear the door of the saloon open while he was in his bedroom, switching out yet another bucket under the leaky roof. By now his back was on fire from the constant back and forth, lifting heavy buckets, and mopping up the puddles of water in his room and at the entrance of the saloon. When he heard the door open, he heaved a sigh of relief knowing that help was on the way. It was no doubt Emily arriving for her evening shift. Gus was hoping she could take on a bit of the work tonight to give him some reprieve. If he could manage to only get away with cooking for the night, heâd be happy. Yet when Gus reentered the saloon, he was surprised to find Haley standing near the doorway looking around for him.
âOh, there you are!â Haley huffed, sounding incredibly impatient and irritated. âHonestly, we thought you were dead, you havenât answered your phone all day.â
While Haley stood in the entrance, arms folded in annoyance, Gus rushed over to his phone to see what was the matter. He didnât have a cell phone as heâd never really had a need for one so he relied on a landline at the bar for any of his phone calls. Gus groaned when he noticed he hadnât properly set the handset back down on the charging dock and it had run out of battery.
âGeez, kid, Iâm sorry,â Gus sighed, setting the phone back on the dock to start charging. Haley huffed impatiently in response.
âI had to head all the way over here in the pouring rain just to tell you that Emily canât come in tonight, sheâs sick,â Haley went on, arms still folded angrily. âFirst sheâs got me running over here for her, then off to Pierreâs to pick up a few things, then over to the clinic for some medicine. Ugh, this is the worst day ever.â
Gus had to try very hard not to burst out laughing at this response, if Haleyâd known the kind of day he was having, she certainly wouldnât consider a few errands âthe worst day everâ. Instead Gus swallowed the urge to rant and smiled kindly in return. Kind smiles were his specialty, after all.
âSorry to hear Emilyâs sick,â Gus remarked in concern. âNeed me to send you with any hot soup? Ginger ale?â
âWe got it covered,â Haley replied. âIâm just gonna stock up on cans of soup at Pierreâs, itâs fine.â
Gus cringed knowing that his employee was sick at home and would be having canned soup as her meal, it was something that he would go out of his way to stop if it were any other day. But between the roof repairs, working solo for the night, and the numerous aches and pains he was experiencing, he begrudgingly accepted that canned soup would have to do. Maybe on another day he would have to make it up to Emily some other way.
âTell Emily I hope she feels better soon but that she shouldnât worry,â Gus went on, his kind smile still plastered onto his face. âI can handle things here.â
Haley left with a brief wave leaving Gus to sigh heavily the moment she was gone. He didnât entirely believe that he could handle things on his own, but there wasnât much of a choice. Business still had to continue with or without help.
4:00 came and went with no sign of the roofers. Gus was getting anxious awaiting their arrival, hoping they wouldnât cancel on him. The buckets were filling up quickly as the rain poured down and now he was emptying full, heavy buckets every twenty minutes. It didnât help that by 4:00, customers were already starting to pile in. While the lunch rush was light from people wanting to avoid being out in the rain, it seemed there was the opposite sentiment at dinnertime. Maybe everyone was sick of being cooped up at home, maybe they didnât feel like cooking, maybe they liked the ambience of dining in a cozy saloon during a rainstorm. Either way, business started to pick up quickly and Gus had to strategize every minute to make sure no time, energy, or effort was wasted. Heâd find himself taking orders one minute, slicing vegetables another, running to the back to empty and replace a bucket, then back to refill a drink, then off to the burners to cook a meal, all while coping with a bandaged finger and injured back. It was chaos. Heâd long since stopped trying to squeeze drying the floor into the mix, instead he setup his wet floor sign and hoped for the best.
Just before 6:30, Gus could hear a clang outside followed by the sound of loud thuds overhead. The roofers must have arrived and already set to work. The activity on the roof caused many of the patrons to stare up at the ceiling in annoyance, it certainly wasnât the most pleasant sound and a lot of the louder thuds and clangs were drowning out the jukebox. Gus could already see on the faces of his patrons that they were irritated and for that matter, he was irritated as well. Of course the work had to be done, but it was hard to focus with so many distractions. He found himself getting side-tracked in the middle of what he was doing and as a result, the orders were coming out more slowly. This was only causing further irritation among the bar patrons. Thankfully everyone seemed to realize many of the disadvantages Gus was working with between a bandaged finger, no extra employee to help, and a loud series of bangs outside beyond his control so no one ever complained to him. Still, he could sense the overall tension in the room and it only added pressure to an already stressful day. Luckily when Gus broke the news to Shane that pepper poppers werenât an option, Shane opened his mouth to whine but stopped upon seeing the look on Gusâ face. Though Gus was ordinarily relaxed and downright jolly, he was sure that today his bad day was reflected in his mood.
It was only a half hour or so later that the doors of the saloon opened and in walked two men Gus had never seen before, absolutely drenched. It must be the roofers. Their entrance alone brought a massive puddle at the doorstep of the saloon and as they walked across the room, they left a trail of rainwater in their wake. Gus would be lucky if no one slipped and fell and slapped him with a lawsuit.
âWell we did a temporary fix for now to stop the leaking, but weâll have to come back when itâs dry to fix it properly,â one of the men explained. âThough truth be told, that roofâs definitely seen better days. How old is it?â
â32 years?â Gus answered uncertainly, screwing up his face in thought to try and recall how old the roof could be.
âI guessed as much,â the other man replied. âWe can fix your roof, but your best bet will just be to replace it.â
Gusâ stomach clenched at this news. Of course. Of course on one of the worst days heâs had, he now had to face the prospect of replacing the roof of the saloon. Even at Robinâs rate it would still be a costly project. Gus shook his head wearily and looked up to the roofers, not even trying to attempt his usual smile any longer.
âWell thanks for patching it up for the time being,â Gus sighed. âHow much do I owe ya?â
âWeâll mail you the bill in three to five business days,â the first man answered. A bill that would no doubt include the travel surcharge as well as a late notice surcharge all to do a very temporary patch job.
When the roofers left, Gus stared down at the massive puddle of water in the middle of the saloon and spaced out for a moment, disconnecting entirely from everything going on around him. The day started poorly enough, but it never let up. It was the kind of day that beats you down until you just want to call it quits and crawl back into bed to start fresh in the morning. Gus didnât often have bad days and when he did, his general optimism was enough to make the best of it. Today, there was nothing at all to make the best of, no silver lining he could find and no positive twist he could spin. Today was horrible. It only got worse when he snapped out of his brief moment of calm to the smell of smoke. The arrival of the roofers had snatched Gusâ attention from the fish he was cooking on the stove and now the filet was smoking in the pan, most definitely burnt by this point. Gus rushed to turn the burner off and removed the fish from the heat in a panic. Just when he felt seconds away from a total breakdown, he could hear a soft, gentle voice to his right.
âGus⌠are you okay?â
Doctor Harvey tilted his head with an expression of concern, clearly noticing Gusâ flustered state. As usual whenever Gus was going through personal problems or having a rough day, he attempted to suck it up and put on a warm, welcoming face for his patrons. Many of them came to the saloon for an escape from their own problems, they certainly didnât need to contend with his. But the moment Gus even tried to plaster a smile onto his face, he could feel his shoulders shaking as a swell of emotion took over. He was moments away from bursting into tears.
âIâŚâ Gus began in a shaky voice, still grasping at the chance that he could play it off but ultimately failing. âNo⌠no, Iâm not.â
Harvey very suddenly looked on high alert and his friendly concern became far more serious.
âAre you in need of immediate medical attention?â Harvey asked suddenly, already rising from his barstool. As awful as his day had been, Gus couldnât help but chuckle at Harveyâs reaction. He couldnât explain why, but it was amusing how quickly Harvey was ready to jump into action if needed.
âNo, no, nothing like that, Doctor H,â Gus replied, shaking his head. âJust a bad day. I wonât bend your ear, Iâll⌠Iâll handle it. Sorry for burning your fish, Iâll get started on another one right away.â
Before Gus could even turn around, however, he noticed Harvey shake his head vigorously and pull out the barstool next to him. Though Harvey was often quiet and reserved, preferring to keep to himself whenever he was at the saloon, in this moment he smiled a kind and welcoming smile as he patted the seat next to him.
âThat wonât be necessary,â Harvey replied. âI canât in good conscience contribute to your hectic night tonight. If youâd like to join me and talk about it youâre more than welcome to or you can take a seat behind the bar to unwind for a bit. Either way, you need a break. Doctorâs orders.â
It was strange how quickly all eyes in the saloon were on Gus the moment he stepped away from the bar, walked around the counter, and took a seat on the barstool beside Harvey. Everyone had only ever seen him behind the bar taking orders, filling drinks, or preparing food. Gus couldnât recall a time he sat on the customerâs side of the bar during business hours and clearly no one else could either. A collective silence filled the room and no one even tried to hide their stares. Once Gus was seated next to Harvey, it was surprisingly Shane who spoke up first.
âYou doinâ alright there, Gus?â Shane asked, raising a curious eyebrow.
âJust need a breather,â Gus replied as calmly as he was capable of. Clearly it wasnât that calmly, though, because now all the patrons in the saloon looked just as concerned as Harvey had moments earlier.
âIs everything okay?â Marnie asked from the back of the saloon.
âGus, whatâs wrong?â Leah asked, dropping the sketch she was working on to step closer to the bar.
âLookinâ a little pale there, Gussy, youâre scarinâ me,â Pam remarked, worry lining her face as she stared at Gus.
It seemed all of the attention in the saloon was on Gus at the moment and he wasnât sure whether that was making this whole ordeal better or worse than it had been. Gus wasnât used to the spotlight on him, he was used to being the one shining the spotlight on others, encouraging them to open up and talk about whatever they needed to talk about. Whether it was gushing over good news, venting over a rough day, or asking for advice from a friend, Gus was always there to support his patrons. It was odd to have the tables flipped and be the one in need of support.
âNothinâ, nothinâ, itâs just⌠itâs just a rough day,â Gus tried to explain, but no one was buying it.
âTake a load off, Gus,â Marnie offered, pulling her chair out to give Gus a more comfortable seat than a barstool.
âIâll grab some ice water, you should stay hydrated,â Harvey remarked, already heading to the back of the bar to prepare a glass.
âWant something to eat?â Pierre offered, bringing his plate of fried calamari over. âIâve only had a few, you can take the rest.â
Leah hadnât said another word, she had already started drying the large puddle in the middle of the saloon with towels she had found behind the bar. Within minutes, Gus was seated in one chair with his feet propped up on another, ice water and food on the table next to him, in the middle of a newly dried saloon. His patrons surrounded him, close enough to show their support but not so close that it was suffocating, and all looked at him expectantly.
âWhat else do you need?â Pam asked, rolling up her sleeves as though prepared to get to work on something, she just didnât know what.
âIâd like to take a look at that bandaged finger,â Harvey pointed out, glancing at Gusâ injured hand.
âWho were those men that showed up outta nowhere?â Shane asked, glancing towards the door. âDid they say or do anything to you? I swear to Yoba if they did, IâllâŚâ Shane trailed off when he caught sight of a disapproving look from Marnie, but Gus caught Shaneâs hands ball up aggressively into fists.
âIâm fine, really, I already feel so much better just to have all of your support,â Gus answered honestly. âThose were just roofers here to look at a leak in the roof, itâs fine. Really. It was just one of those days where everything that could possibly go wrong went wrong but putting it all into perspective, itâs not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.â
It was true, Gus was already feeling better just in the few short minutes that had passed. Moments earlier he had been on the verge of a breakdown but it was incredible how quickly that changed just from receiving the love and support of his community. It was always Gus who was the one providing support, providing help, providing a shoulder to cry on. Heâd never needed the same in return until now but seeing how his patrons responded in his moment of need was overwhelming. It warmed his heart to know that if he ever truly needed anyone, they would all be there for him, ready to help and support him. They proved it tonight. Today may have been one of the worst days Gus had had in quite some time, but tonight somehow proved in an odd and unexpected way to be one of the best.

-----------------------
Lewis Nixon was never one to get jealous- he never had a reason to be. He was a tall ivy- league man with dark hair and dark eyes, never having any trouble with women. He had joined Easy with a wife and child and was perfectly content with the life he had at home. He had tried to distance himself from the men in the beginning, only hearing about them when he listened to Dick. But as time went on, he found himself spending more and more time, getting to know each one more personally.Â
Yet, there was one that he was interested in the most- (Y/N). At first, he kept it professional, wanting to get to know her as much as possible before doing anything he would regret. As they continued to grow closer, he had become bolder, starting to put his arm around her shoulders, brush pieces of her hair behind her ear, and shower her in compliments. And before he knew it, Lewis Nixon was in love.Â
Their relationship progressed fast, wanting to make up for the lost time. There were very seldom moments they would be away from each other, and it seemed all of the destruction and heartbreak had pulled them closer together.Â
Now, as there was an end of the war in sight, Lew found himself stressed about their relationship. He worried that once all of this ended, they'd just go back to the states and act as if nothing had happened. He knew it was likely; he was a difficult person to be with and was more trouble than it was worth. He won't blame her if that's what she chose to do.Â
He stared across the river to the German side, Dick next to him as they spoke in hushed voices about the coming patrol. This was commonplace for them- discussing military strategy, command, and members of Easy. He found it hard to focus, wanting to do nothing more than slip back into his mind, but he knew now wasn't the time.Â
"Speirs pick the men for the patrol tonight?" Lew asked, looking up at his redheaded friend.Â
"I think so.." Dick trailed off, mind somewhere else, as he tried to play the patrol out in his mind. He didn't want any casualties this close to the inevitable German surrender.Â
Eyebrows furrowed, Lew turned when he heard a familiar laugh, eyes immediately landing on the two. He couldn't help the anger that coursed through his veins as he watched (Y/N) and Speirs talking, casually strolling through the grey streets of Hagenaou, acting as if the world wasn't at war around them.Â
It wasn't as if Lewis didn't want her to have friends. He did- he knew she needed a support system as they had been through a lot these past few months. He couldn't always be there, and if he wasn't, he wanted her to have someone. But there was just something about how Ron looked at her and the way she looked up at him that rubbed him the wrong way.Â
"You think those are good?" Dick asked as soon as he finished rattling off the names of the men who were chosen to go, turning when he received no response from his friend. He followed the path of Lewis's eyes, understanding his silence when he got a grasp of the scene. "Speirs!" He called, watching Ron's head turn up at the voice. "Get over here."
Ron jogged over (Y/N) at his heels, a light smile painted on her lips when she caught sight of Lewis. She stood next to him, smiling fading when he didn't look or greet her. "Sir." She spoke softly to get his attention, trying to keep the act that he was nothing more to her than a superior officer. Maybe in his coldness towards her, he was attempting the same thing. But then again, he had never acted like this, and that worried her.Â
"You can go." Lewis finally spoke, eyes casting down to meet hers. His words had a bit of frustration, his hands forming tight fists in the pockets of his warm jacket. If she wanted Ron, he wanted nothing to do with her.Â
With a quick nod, she turned to Dick and Ron, mumbling, "I'll be back at CP." Before heading back the way, she had come. She was immediately lost in her thoughts, trying to explain away Lew's behavior. She went through all of the conversations they had had recently, wondering if it was something she had said. When she couldn't remember any instance where she could have offended him, she moved on to things she had done and still couldn't find anything.Â
With a sigh, she flopped onto the couch, flashing a quick, polite smile to Lip before thinking again. She hadn't even realized she had made it back to CP. Fingers tapping against the soft fabric of the arm of the couch as she let her head fall back, eyes following the patterns of the ceiling. What had she done?Â
Minutes felt like hours as she continued her endless barrage of thoughts, only snapping when she heard the door open. Three sets of heavy footsteps entered, Lip standing to greet the men as they continued their earlier conversation about the patrol. (Y/N) stood when she saw Lew behind Dick, her heat starting to beat a little faster as she knew the only way to solve this would be to confront him.Â
She took a deep breath before speaking. "Sir." She kept her voice steady, beads of sweat collecting on her palms. "May I speak to you in private?" She looked directly at Lew, so there was no confusion as to who she was speaking to.
"Yeah." Dick chimed in, looking between the couple. "You two go along; I need to find Sink anyway." And with that, he was gone, leaving Lew with no other choice than to follow (Y/N) outside.Â
They both shivered as they stepped outside, the cold air floating under their scarves and hitting their bare skin. They walked for a few minutes in silence, Lew trailing slightly behind (Y/N) until they found a little corner to stand in for privacy. He stood, back against the cool bricks of a building, dark eyes steady on her.Â
"Did I do something?" She asked, not wasting any time in getting to the conversation. "Because if I did.. I'm sorry, and I want to fix it. I don't want you to be upset with me." She tried to catch his eyes again when he started to look away.Â
"If you-" Lew cleared his throat, not wanting her to hear the shakiness in his voice. "If you don't want to be with me if this is just something to get you through the war, tell me right now."Â
"What?" She asked, features creased with concern, "No. I don't want that. Why would you even think such a thing?"Â
He let out a breath, creating a white cloud over them as they stood in silence. "I saw the way you were with Speirs today." He finally spoke, feeling like a weight had been lifted off his chest. "And I know you don't look at me like that. I don't want to be your second choice when we get back to the states."Â
"You think you're my second choice?" She asked, starting to understand why he was so upset. "It doesn't matter what part of the world I live in-, you'll always be my first choice. Speirs is nothing more than a friend, I promise. I don't want you to have to worry about me doing something like that to you because I won't. I'm sorry I made you uncomfortable today; it wasn't my intention." She spoke with so much conviction; he almost forgave her on the spot.Â
"I know what you want; you don't want me."
"Lewis." She spoke calmly, keeping her eyes on him as she wanted him to believe her. "I'm with you because I love you, not Speirs. If I wanted to be with him, I would. But I want you."Â
He was quiet, taking a few moments to think about her words before nodding. He felt tears prick his eyes, realizing she truly loved him for who he was- even the bad. It had been a long time since he had felt that way, and he knew he was projecting his insecurities on her. She loved him as he loved her, and there was no reason to push her away.
"You mean that?" He asked, a large hand reaching out to grab hers. His skin tingled as theirs touched, his thumb stroking over her knuckles. He pulled his hand away for a brief second to pull her close and press a kiss to her lips before pulling her into a tight hug.Â
"With my whole heart."
With a teary chuckle, he nuzzled his head into the crook of her neck; arms wrapped tightly around her as he tried to protect her from the cold. "You don't know how much I love you." He spoke into her scarf, words muffled by the soft fabric. "I've never loved anything more than you."

Aftershocks - From the Series Finale (a deleted scene)
Night 1 | Night 2 | Night 3
[Summary: Youâd traveled to Westview to rescue Peter. Getting locked away by some sinister witch mightâve delayed you a bit, but youâd escaped, and you werenât going to be stopped again.
Warnings: mild language, references to injury / mind control / death
Notes: Peter Maximoff x reader. This was meant to be a flashback during Night 2, but it turned into way too long of a digression. So, here it is: presented as a deleted scene while I finish Night 3. Itâs a bit sparse in the places where I wouldâve just been summarizing the episode, but I figure you already know the details. Into Tomorrow is a continuation of the scene, more or less.
Tag list: @cowboyenorgy ]
After an indeterminate amount of time sneaking around Westview, trying to find your way back to the street where Vision lived, youâd finally done it. It mightâve taken days, or maybe itâd only been hours. It was so hard to tell here.
One minute it was spontaneously Halloween. The next, the entire layout of the town kept shifting around you until you were completely lost. But youâd made it.
As much as youâd wanted to go straight to find Peter, you knew you couldnât do it on your own. You didnât know how to counteract the witchâs powers. Vision seemed to know something, though. He was your best chance.
Unfortunately, his house seemed to be deserted. From your hiding place, you couldnât see any lights on, or any signs of movement. Maybe he was at work? Youâd waited this long already; you figured you might as well stay put until he came home.
And just as youâd decided on that course of action, the sound of breaking glass erupted from the neighborâs house. The attic window shattered outward, and two people crashed through it, landing on the lawn.
One of them â a woman you hadnât seen before â stuck a perfect three-point-landing more or less facing your direction. The second â a man â didnât land nearly as gracefully, but still seemed unhurt. You couldnât see his face, but you were certain it had to be Peter.
He stood, moving as though to cut off the womanâs escape route. He gestured for the woman to get up.
âI can do this all day, babe!â he called.
Scowling, the woman straightened up, dusting herself off and clearly getting ready for round two. The witch was nowhere in sight. Maybe youâd have a better chance of getting through to Peter if he was on his own. You scrambled out of hiding.
âPeter!â you shouted.
Confused, they both turned to look your way. You didnât have a chance to say anything more before Peter sped over to you â and you just then noticed how weirdly slow he was moving. Instead of almost appearing to teleport, he was a visible blur that your gaze could follow as it approached you.
Peter stopped directly in front of you. He smiled.
âHey again,â he said, and cheerfully threw you halfway down the block.
You landed hard, skidding another yard or so before coming to a stop. You thanked your lucky stars that youâd landed on somebodyâs lawn, not on the pavement. When the hell had Peter gotten superhuman strength, anyway?
As you sat up, the woman ran to your side.
âAre you alright?â she asked, casting a wary glance back towards Peter, who was strolling casually towards you both.
âIâm okay,â you said. You were winded, and you could tell already that youâd added some new scrapes and bruises to your growing collection, but it didnât seem like youâd been hurt.
âCaptain Rambeau,â she introduced herself, offering a brisk handshake.
âYou can call me Ace,â you said, âIâm⌠a friend.â
âOf his?â The captain raised an eyebrow incredulously.
âYeah, well, heâs not exactly himself at the moment.â
Peter had stopped a ways away from you. You werenât sure why he didnât try to attack again.
âYou called him âPeter,ââ said Captain Rambeau. âIs that his real name?â
You nodded.
âListen, ladies, if you wanted to make this a threesome, all you had to do was ask!â Peter called.
âAnd Iâm guessing thatâs not his real personality,â said the captain, catching sight of your disgusted expression.
âNot remotely,â you said.
The captain shrugged. âWell, guess we know what Agnes is into. The witch,â she explained. âThe one whoâs controlling him.â
âWhyâs he just standing there?â you asked. You werenât opposed to getting a second to breathe, but it was weird.
âI think heâs just supposed to stop us from getting to Wanda,â she said.
At that point, you hadnât the faintest idea who Wanda was or how she was part of this whole mess, but you figured you could ask later. As you looked over at Captain Rambeau, you noticed her eyes glowing an unearthly blue. That was⌠unexpected.
âItâs that necklace,â she said. âThatâs how Agnes is controlling him. If we can find some way to break it⌠But heâs too fast.â
Fast? Maybe by normal human standards, but he was moving at a crawl compared to his usual speed. Wait. That was it.
Your abilities didnât work well in this world, but maybe theyâd be more effective against something from your own world.
âListen,â you said. âI think I can slow him down for you, if you think you can get that necklace. Act like youâre going to make a break for it, and when he tries to go past me, Iâll catch him.â
Captain Rambeau nodded, and took off down the street. Peter immediately gave chase.
Back home, Peter was far too fast for you to ever catch. But here, with him moving like he was running through quicksand? You might actually stand a chance.
You took a deep breath, reaching out. You felt a familiar resonance, and the sensation of something setting like a fishhook.
Peter slammed to a halt like heâd hit a brick wall. He paused for a moment, seemingly confused. He tried to run, but only managed a casual jog. It was working.
Then Peter turned back towards you, his expression something between furious and impressed. Your arm began to shake as you felt him struggling against you.
You really hoped this Captain Rambeau wasnât going to leave you hanging.
âWell, looks like youâre good for something after all, huh, babe?â he said, strolling towards you.
âPeter would know,â you said, trying to keep his focus on you. âI donât just break the laws of reality. I can enforce them, too.â
Peter sighed, shaking his head. âI really wish you werenât complicating things so much. You couldâve just walked away, but-â
At that moment, Captain Rambeau dashed in, grabbing hold of the necklace and tearing it from Peterâs throat.
With a gasp, Peterâs smug expression shifted into a look of horrified panic. He looked at his hands like he was shocked he could move them. Then his gaze snapped back to you.
Your name â your real name â burst from his lips in a strangled cry. He rushed towards you, but stopped short, eyes widening as he took in the state of you.
âOh, God⌠What did I-?â
âItâs okay, Peter,â you said. âIâm okay.â
You took his hands, and for a second you were worried that he was going to collapse.
Peter shook his head vehemently. âBut youâre hurt!â
âAre you kidding?â you said. âRavenâs kicked my ass worse than this in training.â
Which was a lie, but at that point, you wouldâve said just about anything to calm him down. It seemed to work, but only just.
âYouâre here,â he said. His voice was quieter now. âYouâre actually here.â
âOf course Iâm here,â you said. âI came to bring you home.â
That wild look hadnât left Peterâs eyes as they stared into yours. Gently, you took his face in your hands. At your touch, his eyes closed, and his head bowed just a little. You moved closer, pressing your forehead to his. He laid his hands on yours. His shaky breathing began to grow steadier.
Before either of you could say anything else, you were interrupted be the honking of a car horn.
Or rather, a funnel cake truck horn, to be exact. The driver â a bespectacled brunette â leaned her head out the window.
âAs adorable as this is â and hi, by the way,â she called, âI think weâve got bigger problems right now.â
Peter blinked rapidly, trying to pull himself together. He turned to Captain Rambeau.
âSheâs right. Those kids are in danger. We have to do something. Iâll explain everything later,â he said, looking back at you, clearly distressed. âYouâre already hurt. Just⌠stay safe until we get this under control, okay? Please.â
It killed you to think of letting Peter out of your sight after youâd only just gotten him back, but you nodded. You didnât know what was going on or what kids were in danger, but you and Peter were X-Men. The safety of civilians always came first.
âIt looks like they were headed downtown, Darcy,â Captain Rambeau called back to the driver. âTake Ace and follow us there, alright?â
With one last backward glance, Peter took off after Captain Rambeau.
As quickly as you were able, you climbed into the passenger side of the truck, smiling awkwardly at the driver as she put it back in gear and started off.
âDr. Darcy Lewis,â she introduced herself, side-eying you. âNot the kind of doctor you clearly need, though. Sorry.â
âNice to meet you,â you said. There was silence for a moment.
âSoâŚâ she said, âYou and fake Pietro, huh?â
âHis name is Peter,â you said, âBut, yeah. I came to rescue him. Weâre⌠not from around here.â
You were honestly too tired to explain more than that, but Dr. Lewis seemed to accept that explanation.
âWell, itâs not the first time Iâve met people who arenât from around here.â She shrugged. âYou ever heard of Thor? God of Thunder? Heâs a friend of mine. Nice guy; great muscles.â
She said it so casually. Any other time, you wouldâve thought this woman was nuts. But after time in Westview? Her claims didnât sound that outlandish.
âHuh. Nice.â You nodded, impressed. Then, âThis is gonna sound like a stupid question, but, uh⌠Whoâs Wanda?â
Dr. Lewis gaped at you incredulously for a moment.
âOh, boyâŚâ she sighed.
Dr. Lewis gave you the rundown on the whole situation, and frankly? It was a lot. Parts of it â stuff about Avengers and Infinity Stones and snaps and blips â didnât make any sense to you. But you did manage to grasp some of the more immediately relevant bits. Namely:
Wanda was immensely powerful. She had a twin brother named Pietro who â like your Peter â had superhuman speed, and who had died saving lives, leaving Wanda completely alone in the world.
Vision was apparently some sort of android, and also technically dead
But some real piece of work named Hayward had recreated a brainwashed zombie version of Vision and brought it to life using Wandaâs powers, and he was now trying to kill Wanda to cover up his crimes.
How the witch named Agnes and her kidnapping and mind-controlling Peter played into this, Dr. Lewis wasnât entirely sure.
âFinally!â she said, apropos of nothing. âI swear, Wanda mustâve changed the whole layout of the town. The center is just up ahead.â
There was some sort of commotion overhead, and on the ground, too. Two young boys (probably the kids Peter had mentioned) stood in the street, facing down some military-looking types.
You and Dr. Lewis both shouted in alarm as one man pulled out a handgun and aimed it directly at the kids. From around the corner, Captain Rambeau and Peter ran in, and â
Shots rang out. You could only watch in horror as the man opened fire.
The strange blue blur that was Peter struggled to catch and redirect as many as he could, but it wasnât enough. Two rounds tore through Captain Rambeauâs midsection, butâŚ
You were still too far away to see exactly what happened, but Captain Rambeau seemed to glow, or phase out of sight for a second, and then she straightened up â unharmed. One of the boys raised his hand, evidently catching the single bullet that had gotten past Peter and the captain.
The man â Hayward, judging by the doctorâs lurid swearing â threw down his gun and hurried to climb back into his vehicle.
âOh no, you donât,â Dr. Lewis said under her breath. âAce, hang onto something.â
âWhat are you- Oh, shit!â
You grabbed the door to brace yourself as Dr. Lewis gunned it down the street. Before Hayward could begin to make his escape, the funnel cake truck slammed into the side of his Humvee, pinning him inside.
Hayward turned, glaring daggers at Dr. Lewis.
âHave fun in prison,â she said cheerily.
You know what? You take it all back. Dr. Lewis was, in fact, kinda nuts. It was still a pretty badass move, though.
As steam began trickling from the truckâs busted radiator, Dr. Lewis unfastened her seatbelt.
âWell, looks like this thingâs not going anyplace, and neither is he,â she said, nodding at Hayward. âWe might as well â I dunno â see if we can help or something.â
As you followed her lead, you heard Peter shouting: âHow was that in any way âstaying safe?ââ
âYeah, well, thatâs what seatbelts are for,â Dr. Lewis called back. âAnd youâre welcome, by the way.â
Peter was there beside the truck as you stepped down out of it. You shifted your weight experimentally onto your injured leg, and let out a strangled yelp. Okay, bad idea. Peter immediately looped your arm around his shoulders and wrapped his arm around your waist.
âLean on me, lean on me,â he said, âI got you.â
You fought the impulse to collapse against him completely. Youâd spent⌠days? You didnât know how long â scrambling and searching and breaking out of hospitals and hiding in hedges just to get back to him. You just wanted to hold him and sleep for at least a week.
But the whole business wasnât over yet. As Peter helped you limp around the truck, you saw that there was another man standing by the kids and Captain Rambeau, talking to Dr. Lewis. He skin was an unnatural shade of red (was that face paint or something?), and he was wearing this strange caped costume. Catching sight of Peter, the manâs eyes narrowed.
âNo, itâs okay,â said Dr. Lewis. âHeâs cool. Heâs with us now.â
The man didnât seem convinced. His gaze shifted to you, and he tilted his head curiously.
âAce?â he said.
You blinked. âVision?â
The voice was the same. The eyes, too. You wouldnât have recognized him otherwise. He was the only friendly face youâd seen in this place. You couldnât help but smile at seeing him again. Still, you remembered what Dr. Lewis had said â youâre talking to a ghost.
âDo you two know each other?â asked Dr. Lewis.
âWe met, briefly,â you said, âWhen I first got into town. Iâm glad youâre alright.â
âSo, the friend you were looking forâŚ?â Vision inclined his head inquiringly towards Peter.
You nodded. Peter waved, letting out a stilted, rueful laugh.
âYour childrenâŚ?â you asked, gesturing to the boys.
Vision put his arms around them both, a proud smile brightening his worried expression.
âMy children,â he said, âAnd⌠up there is my wife.â
As one, the whole group looked up to the two women still locked in combat above you.
Captain Rambeau frowned. âCanât we do something?â
âI tried,â said Vision, âBut it seems that Wanda wants to finish this on her own terms, unaided.â
The others kept worried eyes on the proceedings, but Peter turned his attention back to you, helping you to sit down on a nearby bench. He knelt in front of you.
âScale of one to ten,â he said, âHow worried should I be?â
âOne,â you said. âIâll be fine. I donât think anythingâs broken, so Iâm calling that a win.â
âHmm, nope. Still worried. Less dire question â why is everybody calling you âAce?ââ
âThe professor said not to tell anybody my real name,â you said. âThere was no way of knowing what I was walking into. We didnât think we should tell anyone too much.â
âOhâŚâ Peterâs mouth twisted into a guilty grimace. âI kinda told Monica everything when we were running over here.â
Red light flashed blindingly above you, drawing your attention upwards.
[The battle proceeds as in canon, ending with Agathaâs defeat.]
Wanda turned back to the others, smiling. The boys ran to hug her, and Vision was close behind. You were too far away to hear what was being said, but at Visionâs words, Wandaâs smile faded. Putting their arms around each other, the family walked a little ways down the street.
âWhatâs going on?â you asked.
Peter shook his head. A pained expression crossed Captain Rambeauâs face. She closed her eyes, turning away.
âThis Vision was never real to begin with,â said Dr. Lewis, her tone oddly solemn. âI think heâs saying goodbye.â
At that, she, too, turned away. Whatever passed between Wanda, Vision, and their children â their farewell wasnât for prying eyes to watch.
Peter seized your hand and leaned his forehead against your shoulder. You bowed your head over his, closing your eyes. After a moment, you felt something pass over you.
It was that same feeling of overwhelming grief thatâd struck you when you first entered Westview, but you understood it now. If you had lost Peter â truly lost him, for good â you imagined that itâd feel something like that.
It only lasted a second, though. In its wake, everything felt brighter, colder.
When you looked up, you cast an uncertain glance back down the main street. There stood Wanda and her children.
Vision was nowhere to be seen.
Wanda pressed her hands to her mouth and slowly sank to her knees. The boys knelt beside her, crying openly, and she pulled them close.
Your heart broke to see them, and you turned away again. It felt wrong to intrude on their grief, even from a distance. Westview had changed. The town seemed faded and dull, somehow desaturated.
Peter had changed, too. His hair was silver again, instead of that strange dirty-blond shade, and his clothes were the same ones heâd been wearing when he was taken.
âYouâre all yourself again,â you said.
Peter looked down at himself in surprise. His eyes widened, and he frantically felt his pockets before letting out a sigh of relief. Something about him looked too bright for your pale surroundings. Maybe it was the fact that neither of you belonged to that world, or maybe it was the fact that you were so damn glad to have him back.
Or it mightâve been that this was the first time youâd seen him smile since he was freed from the witchâs control. You leaned in and kissed him.
âGod, I missed you,â he said.
Before he could say anything else, another conversation interrupted him.
âI donât know what to tell you,â Dr. Lewis was saying. âI was just trying to keep him from getting away.â
She and Captain Rambeau surveyed the dented Humvee in which Hayward was still trapped.
âWell, weâre gonna have to get him out of there somehow,â said the captain.
âCanât you do some sortaâŚâ Dr. Lewis extended her arms, wiggling her fingers in the direction of the vehicle, âNow?â
Captain Rambeau laughed, shaking her head. âI donât think thatâs how it works, Darcy.â
Suddenly, the former funnel cake truck lurched. With a strained metallic groan, it was dragged slowly back and away from the Humvee, leaving just enough space for someone to hypothetically get through and apprehend Hayward.
âWhat the-?â
Captain Rambeau turned to look back towards you and Peter, or rather, to the street behind you. You caught Peterâs eye just before turning to look yourself, and smiled. Of course.
Peterâs eyes widened again. âDad?â
âProfessor?â you exclaimed.
You mightâve expected Mr. Lehnsherr to come after Peter when he found out whatâd happened, but you certainly didnât expect to see him standing on the main street of Westview with Professor Xavier at his side. Peter stood up, but anything he mightâve said was cut off â once again â by Dr. Lewis.
âHey, cheekbones!â she called out. âNice one.â
Upon realizing that he was the one being addressed with that remark, Mr. Lehnsherr gave her a perplexed smile and lowered his arm. But his expression turned serious again at the sound of approaching sirens.
âItâs okay,â said Captain Rambeau. âAgent Woo is with is. Iâll talk to him.â
She and Dr. Lewis went to meet the approaching vehicles, while Mr. Lehnsherr and the professor moved quickly towards you.
âAre you two alright?â the professor asked.
âWeâre fine,â you said.
âIâm fine,â Peter corrected. âYou can barely walk.â
The professorâs brows furrowed in concern. âI shouldnât have let you go alone.â
âIâm glad you did, thoughâ you said frankly. âI wouldnât wish this experience on anybody.â
Peter turned his attention to Mr. Lehnsherr, eyeing him with an expression that seemed a little incredulous, but pleased.
âSo. you really came all the way from Genosha for me?â he said.
âI heard youâd been abducted to another reality; of course I came back. Something this ridiculous could only happen to you, Peter,â said Mr. Lehnsherr. Then his expression softened, âIâm glad youâre alright, son.â
âWhat happened here, exactly?â asked the professor, as he surveyed the street.
âWell, my perspective on events might be kinda limited, but you can see for yourself.â
You leaned towards the professor slightly, offering your thoughts. He touched your temple, and that odd dreamlike sensation washed over your mind as he sifted through your memories of Westview. You were glad youâd asked Dr. Lewis to explain things to you. Maybe the professor could glean more meaning from the story than youâd been able to.
When you opened your eyes, the professor looked pensive, and no less concerned.
âI think itâs high time we get the two of you home,â he said.
âNot that I want to distrust government agents,â said Mr. Lehnsherr, keeping a wary eye on Haywardâs arrest in progress, âBut Iâm inclined to agree with Charles.â
Peter frowned hesitantly. His gaze had drifted to Wanda and her sons.
âJust⌠give me one minute, alright?â he said. âThereâs something I wanna say first.â

A Cure for Insomnia Ch 17
Living with the Cowell's is going about as well as you'd expected it to go. In other words it's more or less a disaster for your mental health. Which is ironic considering you didn't put this much stress on yourself when you were sure a stalker was watching you.
Maybe it had something to do with the fact that the stalker didn't own your house and wasn't in your personal space at every turn.
You'd honestly been expecting Little Jo to be the biggest space invader but Dia and Nate were constantly hovering around you. Nate had taken up the other spare room, or rather his room away from home, the minute he heard you'd be staying with the Cowells. He's made it his job drive you to and from work for the past two days and you both take breaks together now closing the store when you do. Then the second you cross the threshold Dia is right by you either asking for some help cooking or rushing you off for hobby time in the sitting room. It's like living in a 1920's story book, minus the extreme prejudice you would've faced.
It's only been two days and you can't find a way to ask for more space. You tried asking to go on a walk earlier and it turned into a partial jog with Nate. You really just need a moment to yourself it's been five or six days since you last had some 'me' time. All your nerves are shot and you are just a few minor inconveniences away from snapping at someone.
And it would not be a smart idea to nap at your boss. Your boss who's been so considerate and helpful offering his support to you through this whole mess of a situation.
Nonetheless you need space and your own clothes. Nate's don't fit you properly and they're uncomfortably itchy against your skin. His detergent is also very smelly, more in the chemical sense than in a bad sense. Though it could be a bad sense considering the headache you've had the past day from the over bearing smell. You know it won't end well for you but you desperately need to go back home and grab your own clothes and maybe even your car.
Having the illusion of more freedom would put you more at ease.
After all it isn't like you want to knowingly put yourself in harms way, you just can't stand the suffocation any longer. That's why you decided to bring it up during dinner, and why you are now sat in the tensest atmosphere this table has possibly ever experienced.
âInstallation ain't done yet.â is Big Jo's gruff response.
It's as if that short sentence gave everyone premission to breathe again.
âI'm not planning to stay, I just need my own clothes.â you press.
Nate glances over to you before placing his fork to the side, âThen why do you need your car?â
âI'd just feel more comfortavle if I had it.....y'know instead of just relaying on you for rides.â you gesture around to the table trying to get someone yo come to your defense.
Big Jo pinches the bridge of his nose, it's been a stressful week for him as well. You don't mean to be ungrateful in this scenario but you are Autistic and the routine you've spent months carving out for yourself is being ruined. You are wearing smelly itchy clothes and need to have something you have control over. Not to mention you're the one who actively experienced the home invasion and were sat in a hospital for two days.
Big Jo can deal with you asking to go collect your thing, as far as you're concerned anyway. You're at least entitled to that much.
Dia puts her hand on Jo's arm and he sighs, âFine, if Nate takes you. You can go to the cottage.â
âTio, they can't have the car.â Nate is wildly failing his arms and motioning to you as he explains that you're a known flight risk.
Great, nothing's been resolved and you are back to a tense dinner in the Cowell's home.
âFine I won't take the car, just lemme give it to someone to watch it for the...the what's it gonna be a week?â directing the question to Big Jo who's been handling the security detail for your home.
He gestures in a so-so manner.
âYea, just lemme give it to someone to watch for the week.â you pause before throwing your hand up, âBecause let's face it none of us have any idea where those two are now, and they could've easily tampered with my car.â
That was the worst possible thing to say because the second you finish you sentence the table erupts into chaos. Dia and Little Jo voicing their concerns over you driving your car, Big Jo and Nate all but forbidding you from driving and you trying to find some sort of compromise.
âWhat if we had it towed to Whistle's? Nate takes me there after work and we make sure nothing's wrong with my car.â looking around the table at the mixed reactions before you.
âI'll call Lewis for a tow in the morning and you both can go after work.â
âthank you.â you say relieved that you can finally gain back control over your life. Maybe get a little bit of space a long with it.
Everyone calms down and goes back to eating. The air is still so tense you could practically cut it but without your constant stirring it seems to settle. The rest of the night goes by uneventfully, you've changed into some pajamas and are ready to lay awake staring at the ceiling for hours.
The antsy energy you've been building up these past few days have left you without sleep. Tomorrow the hallucinations will probably start up, you wonder if they'll be worse thanks to your healing concussion. Hallucinations aside, your real problem is being alone with your thoughts for the next seven or eight hours.
You have nothing to occupy your mind with and thus nothing to help block out the invasive thoughts.
You'd finished the TAZ graphic novels while you were still at the hospital. The Cowells had taken you straight to their home after you got discharged, so you hadn't been able to grab your switch or any smaller art supplies.
Ultimately knowing that all this was for your safety and benefit you understand them wanting to keep you away from your home. The sight of you attack. Even a supply run could prove dangerous. Try telling that to your restless and bored mind. Constantly feeling like one of the undead wandering around aimlessly with no real purpose has certainly not done anything good for your mental health The lack of stimulation was definitely making it harder to mask and not just explode in  frustration. To just let loose and rage at everything: from the situation to your stalkers, hell even to Jo and yourself. The after the brief flash of rage it would be washed away by the overwhelming guilt you felt about being in this web and dragging everyone around you into it. Whether directly or indirectly.
Safe to say, it is not good to be alone with your thoughts right now.
And it is with that restless energy that your night of staring at the ceiling turns into a morning of staring at the ceiling. Until a knock at your door signals the start of breakfast. A routine you've recently become apart of while staying with the Cowells. Getting ready for the day you make your way to the dining room, not before steadying your nerves and static filled mind with a long and drawn out huff of air.
Not quite cathartic enough to be viewed as a sigh.
And with that you begin you day.
The morning fades into late afternoon and you find yourself in the shop a little before close, just looking through the isles. A vaguely human figure, much too tall to truly be an actual person, had brushed past Nate and into one of the isles. Honestly you're sure it's one of your hallucinations but you still have to double check the isles before you finish locking up the shop. Today had been really slow and you can only recall a handful of patrons throughout the day, though you haven't been with it enough to actually hace much accuracy on that statement.
Nevertheless you are searching for stragglers, thankfully you find none. Really hoping to get out and to Whistle's soon, then home to grab things that'll keep you occupied. Things that are finally yous; actual comfortable clothes, that smell like you too. Eyes blinking in rapid succession at your near giddy nerves.
For once your tic helps you vision, you're able to catch the book laid on its side. Its cover a deep russet nearly matching the shelf in color, you'd have missed it if it weren't for the inverted shapes that pressed themselves into your eyelids almost burning the scenery into your memory. Picking the book up you try to discern where it had come from.
Upon further inspection it appeared to be more of a journal. Half written in English with margins made out it â was that German? Yeah that was definitely German, the Eszetts is way too distinctive for it to be any other language. Poorly drawn out sketches littered several pages as you flip past them. Until you see a familiar but scrathy image. It's of a symbol a circle with an 'x' through it.
As you look at the jagged lines you can't really place where you've seen this symbol before. It's so familiar but the ringing bells do nothing to help you remember where you've seen this symbol. Flipping further in you catch sight of a drawing of a being that is slim and taller than the trees. Wasn't that the figure you'd seen moments before? Right as you were doing you check for customers? You're beginning to think this shop's haunted.
âHey YN, coast clear?â The sound of Nate's voice stops you from inspecting the book any further.
Placing it back on the shelf and nestling it in between to larger books you turn and head out of the isle.
âYea, no customers.â
âC'mon then, I don't want to be out all night.â
Rolling your eyes at Nate's exaggeration, Whistle's probably wouldn't take more than an hour tops and you won;t take long gathering your things from the house â you follow Nate out the door.
Waiting close behind him as he locks up. One thing about the attack is you've become hyper aware of your surroundings and are nearly always on high alert now when you're out in the open like this. Luckily in most spaces you had already noted the number of exits and where to find them. Having to plan escape routes ahead of emergencies might not be the healthiest mentality but it's kept you sane throughout this ordeal. Thank you American public school system.
When you get to the auto shop you see a familiar ticcing brunette talking to a group of mechanics as he leans on your car.
âWho the hell is that?â Nate says squinting at Toby who's practically laid out across the hood of your car.
Weird, haven't they met yet? Toby did hang out at the shop for an entire day. Had Nate not noticed him then? What about the picnic? Before you can say anything Nate's already out of the car and shouting something to the group. Most of the men standing around tense up as Nate storms up to them.
But you catch the dead look in Toby's eye, the other is still horribly out of commission. Honestly without your glasses faces blur from so far away but it's undeniable that there isn't a light reflecting in his eye. Nate seems to be directing his lecture to Toby who doesn't appear to do anything. He's like a big old house cat, tired and done with everyone's shit if they aren't actively feeding him.
Sighing you exit the car, your only real thought is defusing your Karen.
You aren't at all surprised when Toby locks onto the movement of you walking towards the group. The man perks right up and lifts himself off your car in one fluid motion. He's so agile, just like a cat. You can't help but smile a bit at the connection automatically reaffirming with yourself that Toby would totally push over a precariously placed glass of water.
âHey, wh-mrrow-what'd you bring the car in for?â Toby asks side stepping Nate, completely ignoring the older man.
âHuh â oh, yea boss wanted it checked out to make sure it wasn't like tampered with â I guess. Y'know after the accident.â you know the mechanics probably know what happened to you, you do live in a small town after all. Gossip stops for no one. But you do have control over details and talking about the incident and you won't be letting go of that any time soon.
Toby's one good eye darkens as he nods, âGotcha, well it's fine even had Jess take it for a drive. Drove fine. Fixed that weird clicky thing it did on left turns, you're welcome.â
Hah, during the drive through Franklin Toby lost it after two left turns. He noticed the clicking sound your car would make, oddly only on left turns, and started bitching about it to you. At the time you just thought he was being funny when he'd complained you needed to take it in to the shop to fix that. Guess he wasn't. But what's the point of fixing something so trivial?
You cross your arms and are about to sass Toby about how unnecessary that was when Nate interrupts.
âWell since the car's cleared we'd better go settle the bill with Lewis.â
âNo need, no parts to replace plus my free labor.â Toby looks away from Nate and back to you âIt w-w-was so sl-o-ow-w so I told the old man we were dating and I'd been wanting to fix up your car.â
Normally you'd protest a friend or anyone giving you free services but since this was on the Cowells' dime you weren't going to burden them anymore.
âThat's sweet â really really stupid, but sweet.â
Nate's already moving around you two and motioning towards his car as he says, âWell thank you, now we really need to get going YN. I don't want to be out late.â
You nod to Nate, turning and saying bye to Toby from over your shoulder.
When you suddenly remember, âWait, hey Tobias can you take care of my car for the week? I know it's probably a weird request, but I'm sorta âgroundedâ right now and can't drive till the cottage is set up. A little worried the battery will drain from disuse.â
If it weren't for the mask and swollen eye the confused sneer of his would be clear to everyone on the lot. He sputters for a moment before speaking up.
âOk? I mean like that's valid â whoa â a valid concern...but your car's not that old. But I guess I'll watch it? I don't have Connor so it'll have to stay in the lot tonight, that ok?â
Oh this stupid beautiful boy just gave you an out. Probably not the one he meant to give you but you are taking it and running as fast as you can.
âOr, or, or-â
âNo, no, and no. You can't be trusted to not just drive off in the dead of night.â Nate cuts in.
It took a bit of coaxing but after calling the house and getting Dia's blessing you obtained one night to yourself. Really it'd be one night spent at the lodge but it was still better than being a guest in someone else's house for the night, this way you're a guest at the lodge for the night. A little mini vacation if you will. And Toby seemed fine to go with you to the cottage while you packed a bag with your essentials, before you both go back to the lodge.
He even agreed to drop you off at the bookshop in the morning.
âAre you seriously going stir crazy after five days?â he asks as you pull up to the cottage.
âit's more their constant smothering I'm over. I know everyone's worried but I still need my own agency. Y'know?â
âYea....I do.â he murmurs with a solemn look about him before he exits the car and makes his way to the front door.
Your steps falter as you near the cottage. A few flashing images pass through your mind before you shakily inhale. Fortunately Toby is right beside you squeezing your hand to remind you of his presence. You aren't alone this won't end like Monday night.
Opening the door the house is quiet and just as you had last seen it. Nothing was disrupted, even peeking into the bathroom where you expected a crime scene to be â only a toppled shower curtain and over turned bath mat remained.
It doesn't really feel like your house right now. A fuzzy sensation clouds your thoughts, like your brain is trying to protect you from connecting with this place after your recent trauma. Although you aren't sure how you actually feel there's a strong sense of discontentment.
Noticing how you linger in the threshold of the bathroom Toby gently guides you into your room, all without a word. Leaving you alone in your room to collect your things. You move around at a moderate pace, you aren't drawing this out but you aren't rushing to leave soon either. A handful of shirts, a set of jeans, shorts, and joggers later you are grabbing your switch. Before diving into your art supplies you hear a thud across the hall.
You freeze as if ice water had just been poured onto you keeping you in place.
âTobias!â you call out not moving.
âFuck â sorry I acc-ack-accidently kicked your trash can.â
When had he gone to the bathroom?
âAre you ok?â you receive a quick 'yea' in response.
Jittery and in no mood to sit and draw you pick up an embroidery kit you'd been meaning to rip into. Should keep your attention long enough, but maybe you should grab another kit just in case. Bag loaded with enough of your things so you aren't driven mad during your stay â you turn to leave but decide to grab your goat plush as an after thought before leaving your room.
Walking out and into the rest of your house you notice a lack of Toby anywhere. Going towards the front door you spot him as you pass the kitchen. He's messing with your garbage can before he takes out the bag and ties it up.
âWha' cha doin'?â he's been a bit off since you both arrived but you don;t blame him. Not like you're fairing any better.
âI, I kicked it and a whole bunch of trash came out. So then I had to put it-it all back, but there's a lot here and you aren't gonna be here for a week....I, I ju-just thought it'd be better to tak-take it out now.â
Nodding, you're thankful to have such a good friend looking out for you. It would've sucked to come home to a toxic waste site because you'd left trash in the garbage for three weeks.
You probably just thought it came from the bathroom because of the echo or something. Paranoia's been a pain this past week. Maybe you should look into getting a roommate, they might help.
âThey're not that helpful trust me.â
âWow, did I say that out loud?â Toby nods, âFuck I am out of it. How are you and Tim doing?â you might be deflecting/ignoring your own issues. But Toby had his own shit going on Monday night and you doubt he's talked to anyone.
âWe're fine. Just fucking hate him.â the sharp jerk of his head keys you in that he's very much not fine.
âWanna talk about it?â
âWho are you, my fuck-ing therapist?â
âFine, wanna bitch then?â
He comes off the defensive like he realizes that he's talking with you right now. His good eye down cast after he relaxes his stance a bit.
You go to grab your kettle, filling it up and placing it down on the stove to warm up.
âAny preference on tea? I've got a few.â it was very much more than a few.
A chair screeches as Toby drags it out to sit down at your small kitchen table. He doesn't respond so you get one of your special blends out. This blend has rose hips which you normally dislike anything scented or flavored with roses but the ginger and cinnamon can normally over power the slightly floral sting of this tea. Plus it's made with the intention of healing the heart and promoting self love. A spell tea of sorts. Toby could probably use a little pick me up, you always did after a fight with a friend. Getting out the honey you ready the tea infuser into the cup waiting for the kettle's whistle.
âSo just wanna start talking....or should I ask questions?â you turn to face Toby as you lean against the counter.
He's taken his mask off and placed it on the table, of course you remember his deteriorating face but it still surprises you to see it after a few days of not actually seeing his face. Maybe you'll get used to it and one day won't be so fascinated by his teeth.
âTim's just a dick who thinks he has a right to act like he's my dad. Li-ike-like I'm twenty-four he doesn't need to constantly question the things I do. He doesn't have any room to talk to me about my mistakes he literally could've fucked staying here up for us....â Toby head had been snapping to the left several times during his rant and it continued as he got very quiet suddenly.
Tim could've messed staying here up? Did he mean here as in Kepler or the lodge? Barclay did have to break up the fight maybe he didn't want any of the trio in but let Toby stay out of concern for his condition.
âHey I'm sure it wasn't that bad, I could even talk to Barclay to get you unbanned from the lodge.â
He takes the mug you pass him and spoons some honey into it/ It's weird to see half his face drawn into concentration since the other half isn't able to emote yet. Holding the cup in his hands he stares at the swirling steam rising up as you bring your own mug over to the table taking a seat. Not once does he look up at you as you stir in a bit of honey into your own tea.
Toby's neck snaps, âAm I...is it bad that I don't want you to?â
You send him a slightly pitying smile.
âNo hun, you're upset. And you're having a totally valid reaction to a falling out.â
Toby rolled his eyes, at least you thin he did. Hard to tell with just the one.
âMy therapist would love you. That's the kind of bullshit she tells me like all the time.â
Not knowing what to say to that you just nod as he continues to stare at you.
You both continue to talk, well you continue to let Toby rant about how stupid and dumb Brian and Tim are as you finish your tea. You still don't know the details of the fight but it sounds like the cause was just the last straw between the men and not the actual catalyst. According to Toby the other two tend to baby him or talk over his ideas and suggestions because he's the youngest of the group. Twice Toby mentioned Tim's paranoia and how that was really the cause of the tension between them. And how Brian wasn't any help because he'd always side with Tim to make sure his boyfriend was ok.
Toby was very bitter when talking about Brian's role in this more than Tim's. As if his role of passive bystander just sent Toby over the edge. Which from the way he spoke seemed like it's been dragging on for some time. All of this was painting an even worse picture of the smug asshole. Though you didn't break your silence or series of nods and hums until Toby off handily mentioned Brian getting him in trouble with his therapist by saying he was the one who started the fight.
âHe fucking snitched....wait no he lied?!â Toby had to blink a few times before he finally understood what had gotten you so upset.
âYea I mean it's not that big a deal. I was able to tell Clarise I missed a few days of my meds and she made me set reminders in front of her on the call.â
Apparently Clarise was sure Toby suffered from Bipolar Disorder, he was very flippant when he told you like it wasn't anything big. When you mentioned ADHD he kind of blanked. He got fidgety when you mentioned the symptoms you saw and  nervously told you his medication was working just fine for him. Not wanting to make him more uncomfortable you dropped the topic. Soon it was dark and you needed to leave to make it to the lodge for dinner.
âYou sure you want to take the garbage out? What if Chonk is over there?â joking as you lock the door.
âGood point. Trash you live here now.â he dumps the bag onto your lawn and walks towards your kia.
âToby!âyou gasp out, which sounds weird amidst your laughter.
He stops and looks at you his expression more unclear than it's been all evening. Your heart skips a beat as you stare at each other for a moment, your laughter gone now.
âIt's weird to hear you say 'Toby'.â
That's all he says before he grabs the bag and carrying it to the side of your house where your bins are.
The conversation in the car is pretty light in comparison to what it has been. Just jokes getting thrown around and sharing the gossip that you'd head in the hospital because nurses' can't keep their mouths shut. Neither of you know any of the characters in the stories but they're still pure gold. Like the man who came in after getting his hand stuck in a cookie jar. Nervous and scared his wife would find out he's been eating the new holistic dog treats. A few stories or more like vents about the auto shop got thrown in. By the time you got to the lodge both of you were in lighter spirits.
Everyone was ecstatic to see you up and about and made an extra spot for you at the table. You didn't miss how Barclay would rise an eyebrow every time you locked eyes. You just roll your eyes and continue eating. When it got time to settle in for the night you were planning to commandeer the couch but Toby offered his room.
More accurately he offered a chance to hang out with Connor which you readily accepted. The rottie was just as excited to see you, bounding over the second you stepped through the door.
âSigh if only there was a way to see Connor everyday.â you say dramatically whistful as you hold the pup's jowls in your palms.
Toby responds in turn in a drawn out sarcastic monotone âOh my, how sad your life must be. There's only one solution, marry me. So Connor can finally have the second parent he's always wantedâ he ends with a scratch behind the pups right ear.
âI was just gonna kick you and steal your dog.â
He turns to face you, âI can't feel-â
âSo if I kicked you in the back of the knee it wouldn't buckle?â
Toby goes silent before conceding to your point. A mumbled âConnor would avenge me.â is heard.
After you two settle down you both hop into bed to try and get some sleep. Toby was holding your switch hostage so you had no choice but to âsleepâ now.
You really hoped he changed his sheets from the other day. You'd hate to find out you're laying in milk stained sheets. Pushing those thoughts away as your body finally starts to relax, you can feel when your mind begins to drift into the beginning stages of sleep.
âTobes, you can crash at my place if you need to.â is the last thing you say before falling into a peaceful slumber.
Toby on the other hand wasn't able to get much sleep at all that night. He couldn't shake the feeling something bad was about to happen. And unlike Tim he didn't think it was because of you, it just had something to do with you. You were too kind to be one of The Operator's proxies, with all the clues of His presence in this town you were one of many red herrings. Looking over to you Toby only hoped you wouldn't get hurt in the crossfire. Not like Lyra did, he doesn't think he could handle something like that. Especially with how shitty Tim's been lately, he's on edge and constantly about to snap. He just needs a break from everything. Maybe then the weight in his stomach would go away.
In the morning Toby's keen to hold up his end of the deal and drive you to work. You buy him breakfast and an iced coffee from Dunkin' and a pup cup for Connor. The three of you eat in your car while you wait for Nate to arrive. When he does you say your goodbyes and head off to start your shift. Promising Toby you'd call once you've been ungrounded.
Nate's face is grim as you approach the shop, you're starting to get used to the cold sweats from these dread bearing encounters. That can't be a good thing.
Did something happen last night? Were the Cowells targeted? Was everyone alright? These thoughts and more swam through your head as Nate motioned for you to follow him into the shop quickly.
He locked the door and pushed you into the back room. His hast doing nothing to settle your fraying nerves as you stumble past the threshold.
âThat Rogers kid, how well do you know him?â his eyes dart around the back looking at every shadow as if watching their movements.
âWho's Roger?â you feel out of the loop.
Was Roger one of your assailants? Had the police already found suspects so soon on what little information you had to go on?
With a groan Nate smacked his hand against his face muttering something under his breath.
âToby, Tobias Rogers how much do you know about him?â his tone is rushed and sharp.
You didn't even know his last name until now. But maybe you had heard it before but it never clicked with you. Honestly you've known each other for a month that's not very long at all. But maybe it's long enough to learn some things?
â...ah not much?â
There's a panicked look in Nate's eyes and he does his best to control his breathing. But it's clear that Nate is either about to hyperventilate or go into an anxiety attack. You wonder what's got him so worked up as he reached into his bag and pulls out a manila folder.
He hands it to you, you can see the water marks left by his sweaty palms.
What on Earth is going on?

Are you still there?
 /Part 7/
I am hot, I am sweaty, and I am crammed into a small cot surrounded by equally sweaty men. It was the 6th of September, and we had just boarded the Great Samaria a few hours ago. We were now on a journey to Europe.Â
How they managed to jam us into this ship, I have no clue. It isnât like there is 20 men over the capacity of this ship. No, this ship was made for 1000 passengers and now there were 5000 men from the 506th shoved in. I could have made the choice and went to the officers and made my stay there, I want to be near the men.Â
âJoe, darling, your shoulders are like barn doors, I canât fitâ
Oh yes, as the passenger count was so high, the cots were shared by two soldiers. I was sharing with Joe. At first I also considered going to Skip, but then I came to a conclusion that I could stand Joeâs singing in this suppressed place, but listening to Skip talk non-stop would make me an irritable person. And I truly did not want to become that. These men are my companions and I want to treat the with the respect they deserve. I did not have the right to become rude even in these circumstances.Â
Also, if I was put too high, Bull would have to carry me around like a baby monkey.Â
âFor Godâs sake, just turn the other wayâ, Joe grunts as I try to maneuver myself without jostling the cot too much. Â
âJoe, please moveâ, I whine and try to push him. He rasps and looks at me teasing smile on his lips.Â
âyou wanna continue trying, Bambiâ, he teases. I scrunch my brows and pout. Why did he have to make this so difficult. Then I put on my most motherly glare. âJoseph Toye, this is not how you should behaveâ, I scold.Â
He chuckles once again, but proceeds to move over so Iâm finally able to fit in next to him on the cot. It was a tight squeeze, both of us were on top of the bed springs, but we tried to be so that itâs the least uncomfortable. Physically and mentally.Â
âSo you told Muck, huh?â, he whispers once we are in and he hears Skip talking while making his way around the ship. I nod as we both look at the cot above us. âYou sure that was a good idea?â, he asks. I could hear in his voice that he didnât doubt Skip personally, but he was just checking in.Â
I smile. âHe has been good to me since I came here, He wonât betray me now. And it does feel good to let it outâ, I tell. He nods.Â
âSo, what do you think about going to Europe?â, he asks. I shrug. âIâm glad Iâm here, maybe we can speed up the process of ending this war and Matias and dad can go back homeâ, I answer. Matias was my older brother. I think he is the reason Iâm so fond of Skip and Luz, Matias was such a jokester too. It broke my heart to think of him out there somewhere, fighting for his life.Â
âIâm glad weâre going to Europe too. Hitler gets one of these right across the windpipe, Roosevelt changes Thanksgiving to Joe Toye Day and 10,000 a year for the rest of my fucking lifeâ, he says in a much louder voice.Â
I look at him trying not to laugh. âJoe, I promise Iâll celebrate Joe Toye Day from now on even if you donât succeedâ, I manage to say without laughing.Â
âWhat if we donât get to Europe, what if they send us to North Africaâ, Smokey points out from above us.Â
The conversation doesnât awfully concern me, till I hear these words:Â â I like Winters, he is a good man. But when bullets start flying, I donât know if I want a Quaker doing my fighting for meâ
My head turns sharply up towards Billâs bed. My blood starts running cold with the rage Iâm feeling. He had the audacity to condemn someone by their religion and to add to that doubt MY husbands skills in combat.Â
âHow do you know heâs a Quaker?â
âHe ainât Catholicâ
Iâm about to jump up and teach the boy some manners when, Joe apparently notices my open mouth and shoves my head under a blanket. And by shoving, I mean shoving. Nothing gentle about it. I can only imagine the looks people are throwing at us.Â
âOkay Bambi up we goâ he then says and starts lifting me up, my head still covered. I can hear Liebgott and Bill still having a spat and am about to turn to go towards the noise, but Joe keeps me covered till we are away from the scene.
âYou need some fresh air, you angry hedgehog, to he deck we goâ, Joe says and pushes people around to make us way forward. He really saved me from making a mistake.Â
With Richard
The Boat was far from comfortable, that was the only thing Richard Winters would say to the circumstances at hand. Last time he had been this hot, was while running in full gear in Toccoa.Â
âThey really filled this Troop ship to the brinkâ, Lewis says looking just as sweaty as his friend. âIf Iâm going to be this hot, Iâd rather have 5000 ladies here. At least there would be something to look atâ, Nix says.Â
âYeah, and by the time youâd make it to your destination theyâd have eaten you alive, after finding out about Kathyâ, Dick teases. Keeping your mind light in situations like this was the key to keeping your head together. His friend had his own lightness hidden in Dickâs footlocker.Â
Lewis letâs out his trademark chuckle. âEasy for you to sayâ, he snarks back. Dick knows exactly what he means. It was easy for Dick to judge other men for seeking affection because his own wife was there.Â
Dick only looks at his friend with a dry look and they remain silent for a while.Â
âNever thought this day would actually come, of course I knew it was coming, but hell weâve come a long wayâ, Nix says and takes a swig from his flask. Dick lets out a small huff. It really was a miracle that Sobel hadnât found some way to get rid off them.Â
âYou think we can make it Nix, back home I meanâ, Dick asks thoughtfully and plays with his fingers. It was a curious question, not one of sadness or fear.Â
âThatâs not for us to decide, but hey Iâll drink to the thought of seeing your children some dayâ; he says raising his flask in what was supposed to be a happy remark, but when he sees Dickâs face, all the happiness goes away.Â
He furrows his brows and looks at his friend more closely. âYou okay Dick?â, he asks while still studying his now pale friend. Dick just continues looking ahead like he was not there at all.Â
âYeah, Nix, Iâm okayâ, he finally whispers and they drop the topic replacing it with silence.Â
Sonja / Day 3 on the Samaria/
âBetter out than in, there we goâ, George says as he brushes some of my hair back. I had been throwing up for the last two hours. I wasnât sure was it the sea or the smell of the fish soup that made me so nauseous.Â
âI fe- ughâ, I puke again in the middle of my sentence. I was not the only one throwing up, no. But I felt very embarrassed to be in this situation. I was a nurse, not a patient.Â
Suddenly a pounding of boots is heard and I feel someone place themselves on the other side of me. âThere we go, a Hershey bar for the lady. Got it from Winters, tried scrounging and he was kind enough to offer when he passedâ, Skip says as he opens the wrapper for me.Â
And what I can take from his story is that, that he went to tell Richard Iâm unwell and Richard gave him the bar.Â
âThank youâ, I whisper and take the piece Skip snaps me. Luz takes the bucket from my hands and gives water to rinse my mouth.  âFor a small lady, you sure puke your guts out like a grown manâ, Luz teases.Â
âShut up, Iâm only three inches shorter than youâ, I grumble and lean against him while savoring the chocolate to get the taste of vomit out. He only chuckles and makes a mocking âUGHâ noise.Â
âThank you boys for getting me out, I thought Joe was going to kill meâ,I giggle softly. They both huff in laughter. âI mean you did puke on his chestâ, Skip points out. I grimace, that I sure did. His chest and neck where running with fish soup after I retched on him.Â
âSomeone get her a bucket, fucking hell, if someone isnât gonna help her, Imma kill every fucking one of youâ
âSkip, go get us some cards, I donât think she can handle the sweat level yetâ, George says as he strokes my back, as I gag again a little.Â
How long was I going to be stuck on this boat.
----------------------
The night was awful, I felt sickly and I noticed that Joe was turning more than usual, probably because of the back pain. We were lucky enough to fit on the cot so that we could both sleep in it, but nothing seemed to get me catch sleep. I was afraid of throwing up again.Â
âNurseâ, I hear a whisper. I jump and look up. Even in the dim lighting I can recognize my husband. I carefully stand without jostling Joe too much, and gently put the blanket on him again, after raising it up a little to get a little cool air on him.Â
âYes sir?â,I ask professionally as I stand before Richard. He just nods his head towards the deck.Â
As we make it to the deck we quickly and quietly find a corner with no one sleeping in it. He takes a look around and has a seat. Before taking something out from his pocket: chocolate.
âRichard, you donât have a sweet tooth, how do you have all theseâ;I ask looking at him oddly.Â
âI got this from Nix, he was willing to sacrifice it for I quote âholy businessââ, I giggle at my husbands expression as he quotes Lewis. I take the bar from him and put it next to me. I honestly felt too sickly to eat it now.Â
I look at Dick biting my lip. He seems to notice the softness in my gaze as he utters a gentle âcome hereâ, and gently guides me to lay my upper body onto his legs.Â
âDonât worry, darling. I can keep watch, and if they ask more, I can say that I was just looking out for you as your officerâ, he soothes and rubs his hand along my arms. Which feels amazing on my sore muscles.Â
âI think itâs time to tell the men soon anyway. They need to get used to the idea before we jump, and I think that they know you well enough to not judge youâ, he then brings up. I nod against his leg, this living in secrecy was starting to become more and more difficult.Â
I then squeeze my eyes shut as nausea takes over me. âRichie I think I might pukeâ,I whimper. I always got very stressed when I had nausea, and sensitive. âI donât wanna puke on youâ,I say and try to rise, but in all honestly rising just made it worse.
Richard guides me back gently. âIf you puke on me, then you do. Donât worry about that. Letâs just get you comfortableâ
----------------------
On the 15th of September we finally made it to Liverpool. I was still quite pale after the ride. Eating had really become a task, and without food, you lose strength. But with the threats from Joe and gentle urging from Carwood Lipton, I was able to get food down.Â
âYou feelinâ good maâam?â, comes a familiar Arkansas drawl as I give a happy sigh to be on the steady ground. I chuckle âAye, sir, better than everâ, I say teasingly. He mock salutes me and we start walking for our shelter for the night.Â
I walk on Joeâs side keeping a firm hold of his sleeve as I had been told by Lip.
âWe donât want you getting lost, you are harder to find than most of usâ
At first I had wanted to tell him that I am a grown woman with military training, but his truly caring gaze changed my plans. If I could express in words, how thankful I was for that mans care I would shout it at his too humble face. Okay, these boys are really rubbing off on me, I wouldnât shout, maybe gently lecture.Â
Tomorrow we would be going to our final destination.Â
-------------------
Aldbourne was vastly different from all the places Iâve had my training and from what the men told me, it was also very different to them. We were in the middle of a village! We could actually see other people.Â
âCome on Sonja, please, please pleaseâ, Skip was begging on his knees. We had gotten our passes to go to Swindon for a Saturday night dance this weekend. The boys were all excited about being able to go and actually getting the passes this time.Â
âSkip, you know I get uncomfortable with many people, also itâll be nice to have some time aloneâ, I try to reason as he keeps pushing my skirt and blouse towards my hands.Â
He looks at me with his green puppy eyes. âplease, Bambi, for me, Joe is coming too. Arenât you? Hear that Joe is there tooâ, he begs. I sigh and look at both of them.Â
âOkay, but when I say want to come back, I willâ, I say pointing at him.Â
âYes!!â
-------------------
I didnât put on my skirt and blouse, instead I took out my light blue swing dress and let my hair down. It was nice to feel girly again, and actually have a reason to get dolled up. That was not the best part, the best part was actually putting my wedding ring onto my finger. I gave a small kiss to my cross and said a little prayer of gratitude before going to the boys.Â
The boys were happy to have me, their lady with them.Â
âYour husband is one lucky bastardâ. George had said when he saw me. Bull had even blushed when I gave him a kiss on the cheek as thanks for helping me with my jacket.Â
All the girls in the dance were dolled up too. I found the music in there absolutely delightful. It might have not been completely in my taste, but I appreciate it nonetheless. Also the sound of shoes clapping against the floor was beautifully relaxing.Â
âWould my lady like to dance?â, Skip asks bowing at the waste. I shake my head at his antics but take his hand none the less. And boy did I make a mistake. I was tosses from Skip to George, to Bull, to Joe, to Don (who mind you, was an excellent dancer!) and god knows who. The Easy boys really decided to hit the floor.Â
Once I was able to make a run from them, I found Joe drinking a beer at one of the tables. âYou having fun?â; he asks and takes a long sip. I nod and smile widely.Â
âI canât remember the last time Iâve been able to dance so much! But I do wonderâ, I bite my lip. âAm I a bad person to be here, without Richard?â; I whisper.Â
Joe shakes his head. âYouâre too good for this world. There ainât nothing wrong with you being here. He trusts you and you trust him. And hell, you were giggling like a school girl when you realized you still had time to go to him after this. You arenât committing any sinâ, he soothes with a little teasing making me blush.Â
Who can blame me, I just want to grab my Robert Burns poems and go read with Richards head on my lap. Was that really too much to ask for? He was my husband.
We continue our conversation, with me sipping a cup of water, until I hear a similar interruption as in the boat.Â
Bill and Skinny make it to our table chatting. âHe might be a good man, but Quakers arenât meant for this shitâ My patience had been running thin with these comments for so long and now my patience was all run out.
âHe is not a Quakerâ, I snap. Bill turns to me with an odd look on his face.Â
âAnd how do you know that Bambiâ, many of the Easy men were now near our table from hearing my raised voice.Â
I donât know what made it come out of my mouth, but this did anyway:Â âIf my husband was a Quaker I think Iâd be the one who knows that and not youâ
I quickly realize what I said and plant my palm against my face, trying to remember how to breathe. I hear Joe sigh from next to me:Â âWell, now you fucking said itâ

general 24 w/ lewvithur maybe? :0c
Prompt list.
âI havenât seen (her/him/them) smile in months.â
Iâm not really used to write about lewvithur (or ot3 in general) and I apologize if this is a little odd or off character <: iâm tryingÂ
Summary: None of them had genuinely smiled since their lives had torn apart. Arthur finds his old keyboard and plays an awful familiar song.
Song:Â âSlow Danceâ by Saint Motel
Vivi licked the melted marshmallow off her fingers with as much enthusiasm she had. Definitely the idea of taking her boyfriends out in the woods for a nice little evening soiree, technically they were on a mission hunting down a werewolf but it wouldnât hurt if they stopped for a second, and the night above them was lovely-Â
The blue leader couldnât avoid the dark sky filled with stars and lights of distant cities, she had told them to rest for a while, they all deserved it anyway. Arthur had brought the idea of building a fire when the sun started to set behind them and Lewis suggested s'mores because âit wasnât a real campfire if it didnât had sâmoresâ, the ghost couldnât eat anymore but who were they to deny such a delicacy.Â
So there they were, their faces red because of the heat and a little sweaty too. The vanâs radio had gone off a few minutes ago and they had run out of conversation topics. The three of them sat on a fallen log, pressed together like a human sandwich one next to another, a little awkward if you asked, but way more comfortable than try to get a real conversation out of anyone.Â
Vivi sighed tired. âLooks like we ran out of cookies.â she stood up. âIâm going to see if there are some more in the van.â
Arthur nodded and Lewis just didnât mind at all.
She jumped on the back of their van, a lamp on her mouth to leave free her hands. She brushed with her eyes the tall, metallic shelves that held many of her supernatural artifacts that she assured held properties and could be handy on one of their jobs, she had never used them, true, but you never knew when a spirit could strike, so she kept them to collect dust on tagged cardboard boxes like forgotten items, one of those boxes should have the food supplies, she was sure, but after Lewis died, nobody had reorganized the shelves, and nor she or Arthur cared enough to do it, so now the âfood suppliesâ were strange books Vivi didnât remember collecting and a few shiny rocks Arthur probably picked up during their trips.
The blue haired girl emptied all the van and couldnât find those damned cookies- she had looked everywhere except for the higher level of the shelves, âThey must be thereâ, she thought. âI swear for the love of fuck, Arthur, that if you ate them Iâm starting a warâ.
She picked the box but it slipped out of her hands and landed on top of her hair.Â
âOwâ she patted herself. Many other things fell along with her, Lewis wasnât going to be happy with the mess she made. The girl kicked some stuff out of her way until a strange one came across her path, she didnât recall having that one when 99% of the stuff stocked there was hers. It was a black square bag, it was dusty and a little heavy but the lazo on one of its sides made it easier to carry around.Â
âArthur, sweety,â she called, popping her head out of the van. âwhat 's this?â
Half asleep Arthur turned to her. âOh.âÂ
He moved to inspect the bag and put it on the floor, his slim hands slid open the zipper to reveal an old keyboard piano.
âI have been looking for this for ages!â Arthur kneel before it and ran his fingers through the white and black tiles. âI havenât pla- played this since- since⌠wellâŚâ
The hurt look on his eyes said it all. The boy turned it on, wondering if it still worked after a year of abandonment. To his surprise, it did, the screen came back to life and lights shone brighter than before. A small smile crept upon his lips, shy as himself.Â
âCâmon, Artie.â Vivi hurried to sit down next to the ghost, right in front of Arthur like they were a crowd. âDelight us, please.â
Arthur looked at her hesitantly, and then to the keyboard, unsure if he even knew how to play it anymore. âI donât- I donât know, Vi, itâs been a- a whileâŚâ
âPweaseeeee.â Vivi wore puppy eyes. Oh no, please donât, he thought, not the eyes.
âFi- fineeee. I guess I can play something.â
The blond man ran through his memories, he should remember how to play any song, literally any song was goodâŚ
âThis is one that everyone knows.â And then he played the first chord.
âI'm waitin' for that slow dance.â
Vivi gasped.
âSo I can feel your arms around me.â
Oh, she definitely knew that song.
âWait âtill the music turns to romance.â
Arthur laughed a little at his girlfriendâs reaction.
âGo tell that Dj that he owes me.â
With a hand on her hip, she stood up, smiling brighter than she had ever done it. Vivi fixed her messy blue hair, tied her scarf tighter and tucked under her skirt her oversized sweater. Offering a hand to the ghost, she invited him to dance. A funny expression broke the specterâs skull and took her hand in acceptance. They pretended the dirt under their feet was a fancy dance floor and the moon a disco ball.
âWell, they donât know that much about it.â
They began to move around to the beat of the song.Â
âBeen waiting every single day.â
Vivi spinned around, holding her boyâs hand as he catched up with her.
âI could be your best friend, I could be your centerpiece, I could be your soulmate, I could be your everything.â
She planted a kiss on his forehead.
âThunderbolts and lighting queuing up the symphony.â
He carried her bridal style and leaned her to the floor, taking a laugher out of her.
âYou know Iâm waiting for that slow dance.â
Vivi escaped from his grip with a jump and rolled a little on the dirt.
âSo I can feel your arms around me. Wait âtill the music turns to romance. Go tell that Dj that he owes me.â
They both danced a silly dance, no longer making sense.
âHand on my back, panic attack. Pull it together, don't overreact! Keepin' her close, don't step on her toes. Leave enough room for the holy ghost.âÂ
Now Mystery had joined them.
âRomanceâ
Arthur grinned at the sight.Â
âToo slow but this is how you showed me.â
For a moment, Arthur was no longer in the woods but the Kingsmenâs mechanics garage. He was a small boy once again.
âWe could talk for forty hours.â
He was sitting outside, watching the sunset over the mountains, time didnât matter, he was simply staring at the beautiful magentas and lilacs the sky had painted.Â
âWeâd end up right back at the start.âÂ
It reminded him of Vivi and Lewis, and he couldnât take his eyes away from it. He thought it was beautiful. It was the night of the prom, he knew he should be sunking his problems on punch and dancing cheesy songs with his friends, but nobody had asked him out, Lewis and Vivi should be there, enjoying their night.
âI could be your best friend, I could be your centerpiece, I could be your soulmate, I could be your everything.â
They made a nice couple after all.Â
âThunderbolts and lighting queuing up the symphony.â
He was lost on himself until both of them showed up with bright smiles at him and asked him out.
Arthur had never been so glad to say yes.
âYou know Iâm waiting for that slow dance.â
Suddenly, without a warning, a cold hand pulled him. It was Vivi.
âSo I can feel your arms around me.â
âOh, no no no no, Iâm- Iâm not a good dancer.â
âWait âtill the music turns to romance.â
His girlfriend laughed. âWho cares?â
âGo tell that Dj that he owes me.â
She gently took both of his hands -flesh and metallic- and dragged him along with her where Lewis awaited.
âVivi- wait, no-!â
âThereâs no doubt about it.â
She kissed his cheek to make him shut up, it worked indeed. Flustered, Arthur surrendered.
âItâs something magical.â
She never lost her grip on his hands, and, as if they were little kids, Vivi spun around slowly.
âFeeling our surroundings.â
The world around him moved fast, the couple stayed still, or that was what Arthur felt when he could only stare at her beautiful blue gaze.
âAnd time is slowing down for us.â
Arthur sank in the moment. Looking at her toothy smile directed at him, Arthur welcomed that warm gesture in his heart and let the feeling of being all right washed over him.
Vivi slowed down and when they werenât that nauseous she quickly grabbed him in a suffocating but nice and fitting hug, right when he was about to return it, he was pushed towards a black suit.
âYou know Iâm waiting for that slow dance.â
âÂżMe concedes esta pieza?â Lewis said in fluent spanish, Arthur looked up to meet not a terrifying skull but a human face with a gentle smile on him.
âSo I can feel your arms around me.â
âHuh?â Arthur didnât even pay attention when Lewis talked with that accent.Â
âWait âtill the music turns to romance.â
âWould you grant me this piece?â He laughed and Arthur just limited himself to nod as his blush warmed all his face.
âGo tell that Dj that he owes me.â
A hand went to his back and another one lifted his robotic arm, the blond boy followed him, taken back a little, was he really dancing with Lewis-?
It didnât feel real, but he loved it.
âHand on my back, panic attack.â
Arthur rested his head on his boyfriendâs big chest just like a pillow.Â
âPull it together, donât over react!â
How long had it been since he had been this happy?
âKeepinâ her close, donât step on her toes.â
He hadnât seen any of them smile, a true smile, one that didnât lie.
âLeave enough room for the holy ghost.â
A smile that could warm your soul for decades.
âRomance.â
No, he hadnât seen one.
âToo slow but this is how you showed me.â
The music ended and Lewis didnât pull away his boyfriend, instead he kept him close and placed his lips on top of his tall hair. Vivi came to finish the hug, her short arms doing their best to hold them together until she was tucked under both of her boys.Â
No, Arthur hadnât seen them smile in months.
He opened his eyes to snitch on them, beautiful smiles decorated the moment, he couldnât help but think that things were going to be alright.

For your writing prompts, Iâve always found that the phrase âfor youâ has a certain gravity, so maybe something with that? :3
This was such a good prompt, which is my only excuse for why this is three days late and barely counts as a drabble at all.
jonmartin, post-S5 domesticity and parenthood
âHe was showing me another room he's made it to on his game,â Jon offers as an explanation as he ambles back into the living room. âSome sort of creepy dungeon, lots of what I can only presume are zombies. He can turn into a dragon now with this magic cloak thing, it's all very sophisticated.â
Martin, whose knowledge and ability with video games both started and ended with having a go on someone's Game Boy Colour one rainy school break, makes a supportive, 'showing-interest' noise as he feels around for the remote before finding it wedged under his thigh, muting the sound of a gritty BBC drama he is clearly not enamoured by. He shuffles over to make room on the sofa. Disturbing the cat, who jumps off his knees, casting a betrayed gaze upon the offender before she haughtily goes to commandeer the high-backed chair usually taken up by Jon.
âDragons are one of the few things that haven't turned out to actually exist, and tried to murder us.â
âOh, don't be like that,â Jon smiles as he drops down next to him.  Martin's got a beer out of the fridge now Lewis has gone to bed, and Jon leans forward to snaffle it from the coffee table, takes an  slow sip, winces at the flavour and puts it back down on its coaster. âSwimming's at ten Saturday, isn't it? Still haven't fixed his goggles.â
âHalf past, they had to move the rota round for some other thing,â Martin says distantly. Â In the background, someone on the TV has their mouth bared in shouting, and some grim-dark poorly shaved detective is holding a gun.
Martin's shoulders are set tight. He's twisting his wedding ring round and round and round, fidgety and unsettled all evening, and now he's leant forward with his elbows on his knees, half-way through a beer on a Thursday night even though he can get funny about drinking in the house on a weekday.
âYou want to talk about it?â Jon asks quietly.
Martin frowns, but doesn't ask how he knows. His palm opens from clenched to fold their fingers together, his touch chilly from the condensation on the bottle.
Jon waits for him.
Martin clears his throat. He sources out the remote again and flicks the TV to standby, the dour detective vanishing morosely.
âI'd like to talk to you about something,â Martin replies eventually. âAnd I know that we're not going to agree on it, but I want you to at least â hear me out, alright?â
âAlright,â Jon says carefully. A frown has rooted on his own face, but he pushes the curious simmer to a lower heat and tries to be patient. âAlright. What â what do you want to talk about?â
âWhat happened last week.â
âMartin...â
âLet me finish,â Martin says, his tone slightly sharper. He doesn't shout, never in the house. The only time Lewis sees his dad raise his voice in anger, he's belligerently got his hands in the guts of the boiler, pride the only thing stopping him call a plumber, or else he's stubbed his toe against the side table he always manages to catch.
Jon lets out a heavy breath.
âFine,â he says. âFine â we â we can talk about it. You know what I think.â
âYeah, well, I don't.â
âIt was an outlier. It doesn't mean there's a conspiracy.â
âI can't see why you're downplaying this. It was a threat, and you got hurt.â
âA few bruises from the fall. Look, Daisy and Basira handled it. They were â they were a lone Hunter. It wasn't anything organised, so I don't see the need to twist myself in knots when it won't happen again.â
Martin scoffs dismissive. âLast I counted, we've had three 'it won't happens again' in the last ten years. Face it, we've been lucky. This one got too close.â
âSo what are you suggesting?â Jon says, deliberately calmly. Martin'll get to his point eventually, but he'd rather cut through whatever he's been stewing in for the past several hours.
Martin throws up his hands.
âI am suggesting that we consider the very real possibility that something like this might happen again. Something worse than some mangy Hunter or clueless cultist. These things out there.... there's more than one of them who'd see a former Archivist as a threat, Christ, I just want you to take this seriously...â
âI do take â â Jon's voice spikes before he exhales hard and lowers his tone again. âOf course I take this seriously. Of course I worry. But if someone came here, if anyone came here, I'd â I'd Know....â
âKnowing didn't stop you from getting hurt,â Martin insists. Â âIt â it doesn't make you invincible.â
âI've never thought that...â
âWe need to prepared, is all I'm saying. Your... the knowledge you get from the Eye, it's so much, it's so much less than before. So what if it's not enough, what if it tells you something too late or not at all?â
âMartin, I'm not going to get myself worked up over maybes.â
âMaybe you should!â Martin snaps.
They are both bullishly quiet for a moment before Martin holds his hands up again.
âAlright,â he presses on, lower pitched than before. âAlright, then lets deal with facts then. Fact number one: there are â there are forces out there that want to see you come to harm.â
âMartin.â
âAm I correct?â Martin repeats. His gaze won't leave Jon's. His temper's made his neck and throat go blotchy, but he's pressing his hands down too hard on his knees to stop their tremors.
Jon meets his eyes.
âCorrect,â he says. Because it's what Martin wants to hear, because it's what Jon tries not to think about when the night-time drags loud and sleepless, and every noise he cannot account for takes on the guise of malevolence.
âFact two,â Martin continues. âThere is the possibility â no, no, listen to me, Jon â there is the chance, however small, that those forces, those people, could come here.â
âSo what, we should install more locks? Buy more fire extinguishers?â
âThis isn't funny,â Martin says waspish.
âI'm not laughing,â Jon replies dogged.
Martin lets out another aggrieved noise. He takes a moment, steeples his hands against the lower half of his face.
âThat Hunter,â Martin says slowly. âHad our address on them. Knew where we lived. If Daisy and Basira hadn't sorted them out, they would have come here, and tried again. And if it can happen once, then it could happen again. A-and some of those people, the ones that serve their gods a-and want to make a name for themselves by going after an Archivist â â
Here Martin's voice catches thready, the centre of his terrors finally excavated.
âI can't â I can't protect you from that, Jon,â he confesses. âI can't protect Lewis from that. And if someone comes here, what if you can't either? You're not â you're not exactly in the game of e-exploding people any more.â
âBeen trying to give it up,â Jon replies. Martin's laugh is a little wet.
âSets a bad example anyway.â
Jon rubs the skin of Martin's hand. He doesn't know what he can say to make this better.
âI would like to propose an idea,â Martin says. Softer now. More tired. âand I-I want you to hear me out.â
âOK.â
âWhatever it is.â
âYou're not exactly inspiring confidence.â
Martin gives him a Look.
âOK,â Jon says, rubbing his thumb over Martin's knuckles. âOK, I promise. Whatever it is, I-I'll at least listen.â
Martin nods, and though his lips are pinched, he squeezes Jon's hand once gratefully. He separates them, and gets up, going over to his shoulder bag slouched by the door. He'd been vague, earlier this week, when he'd gone out on an 'errand'. Â Jon had assumed it was something to do with their anniversary in the next few weeks.
Martin takes out a thick clump of folders from the stomach of the bag. Jon's heart drops when he sees the green-ink stamp of an imperious owl on the front of the beige folders but he says nothing.
âI have been thinking,â Martin says, planting himself back down. âAbout back-up plans. Last resorts, you know. Â If someone does come here, if they're more than either of us can handle, if we can't keep our son safe.â
He passes Jon the folders. They're stuffed wide with statements, corroborating evidence, photographs, police reports, newspaper snippets attached with paper clips. Jon reads the introductions of a few statements as he flicks through, feeling not a little unmoored by the way this conversation has progressed â Statement of Dai Williams, regarding a library in Blaenau Gwent; Statement of  Michalis Charalambous, regarding an unusual wedding present â and something aches in him like a barely-forgotten hunger, twinges like an old wound.
Near the top of the pile, Â there's a photograph, blown up to A4 size, of a book. The backdrop of an unremarkable desk, the cover itself blue backed, scuffed and foxed with age, the silver title decorated with florid curlicues: The Shipping Forecast and Other Nautical Curiosities. There's no author.
âWhat's this?â
âIt's a Leitner,â Martin says. Not briskly, but straight-off the bat.
Jon pushes down several reactions with difficulty. Martin knows how he feels about Leitner. Martin wouldn't bring this to him, knowing what histories have left their scars on him, and beg for Jon to listen to him if it wasn't important.
âGo on,â Jon says, and nothing else.
âThis book is currently in Archive Storage, where it's been for the past twenty or so years,â Â Martin continues. He's to-the-point now, direct, and Jon appreciates it. Â âThose are copies of all the statements I could find related to it, or people who have been in contact with it, and it makes up a fairly consistent picture of ownership and exchange for at least the past hundred and fifty years, records get a bit patchy before that.â
âWhich Power?â
âThe Lonely.â
That makes Jon look up. Martin's jaw is set for an argument but his voice betrays him.
âTell me,â he says.
âThe statements are all mostly the same. The book gets found or left as inheritance or in library donations, and some poor sod picks it up. Specifically, what happens is it renders people invisible when they read it.â
Jon blinks.
â... you're taking the piss.â
âNo. Practical research did some basic experiments to test it before it was boxed up properly, they've â there's notes there, if you want to read in detail, but basically, you read a few lines of it, and you and whatever you're holding can't be seen. It wears off after a while, depending on how much you've read. The researchers went up to about a page.â
âThere's a catch, obviously.â
âIt's addictive to some people. Some of the people in the statements can use it once, get the heebie-jeebies then never touch it again, some of them can't shake the urge. The â er invisibility is more tempting to those vulnerable to the Lonely, or so the hypothesis goes. They read a little more, a little more and then, they're just gone.â
âSo it's dangerous?â
âYes.â
âThen why? Why show me this?â
âIf someone comes here,â Martin says, âIf it's â if it's the Vast o-or the Desolation or even th-the Slaughter, we can't fight them. We can't, OK, we-we have nothing that we could fight them with. So we can't fight them, and we can't outrun them, and I don't think hiding under the bed and hoping they leave is going to do much either. The best we can hope for is that we have a few minutes grace courtesy of your magical eyeballs. And that would at the very least give us time, to get Lewis somewhere safe, get out of harm's way, to go to Daisy's or something.â
âAnd your great plan is that we use a Leitner to what, turn invisible and sneak away unseen?â
âI'm asking you at least consider it.â
âI have considered it and it's â it's a Leitner, Martin! You know how I â Â They're not toys, they're dangerous!â
âI know that! Of course I know that. But so is being unprotected! We wouldn't be using it for â it would be a last resort, nothing more. You can read the statements and the reports. I've read them all, over and over again, I-I've checked and doubled checked. As far as I can tell, the turning invisible is a temporary state.â
âFor the right people. What about you?â
Martin does not meet his eyes.
âI wouldn't be using it.â
â...What.â
âI wouldn't â I wouldn't be able to,â he says. Quieter, self-conscious. âMuch as I like to think that I'm â no. No, it'd be, it'd be too much of a temptation.â
Jon's tone has slipped flat and hard.
âSo you're suggesting an escape plan that, what, doesn't include you?â
âYes.â
âNo.â
âJon â â
âNo!â Jon wants to get up, to stand, to shake Martin by his ridiculous shoulders, because how dare he, how dare he. âNo, how can you even ask me that?â
âBecause I need to,â Martin urges. âBecause it's not just us. Because if the worst happens, I need to know we have some way of protecting Lewis, that you could use that book to make sure he's safe.â
âAnd leave you.â
âI'm not the one they want.â
âI don't remember them being all that picky about hurting whoever was in their way,â Jon bites back, and he knows he's louder now, that his eyes are getting wet and his face hot. âYou can't know that.â
âNo,â Martin replies honestly. âNo, I-I can't.â
Jon rubs at his eyes. The anger's boiled over and out of him at a dizzyingly come-down from furious. He listens, wondering if they've woken Lewis, but he doesn't hear the squeak of bed-springs. There's a wind picking up outside, and the cat twitches in sleep.
He doesn't feel angry any more. Just sick and scared.
âThat's not fair,â he swallows, looking at the damp-blurred image of his husband's face. âThat â that's not fair, to ask this.â
Martin's moved closer. Places his hand back over Jon's.
âI know,â he murmurs, and he sounds sorry, but that doesn't help either of them. Â âI know it's not. And if there was â was any other option, I wouldn't even think of suggesting it. But I'd, I'd like you to think about it. Please. For me.â
Jon leafs through the folders in his hands without taking any of them in. Martin strokes his back soothingly, and crowds in too close, not close enough.
âI'll read them,â Jon says eventually. Wetly and unhappily. â The statements, reports, I-I will. For you. And if â and only if they seem legitimate â I'll come with you and have a look at the book myself. And that's all I can promise you.â
âThank you,â Martin whispers, and presses his lips to the thinning crown of Jon's hair, Jon leaning back slightly against his chest. He clears his throat. âBasira's all for performing some more clinical tests on the book, if you wanted some more concrete validation.â
âWhy am I not surprised,â Jon says, feeling too tired to enquire further.
They linger on the sofa for a while after Martin shoves the folders back into his shoulder bag.
âI better put the dishes away,â Martin says.
âLeave them. I'll do them in the morning.â
Their bedtime routine is closer and quieter. Usually Martin goes up first, and Jon watches the newspaper review or the tail end of a documentary, but tonight he trails after him as Martin checks all the plugs and double-checks all the locks.
Martin pokes his head into Lewis' room, even though they said their goodnights hours ago. Jon can't begrudge him the anxiety.
âKicked all the blankets off as usual,â he reports back as they knock elbows in the bathroom, Jon's mouth full of toothpaste, passing Martin a water glass to take his statins. Martin dutifully swallows the pill before reaching for his own toothbrush. âHe sleeps like you, arms flung out all over the place.â
Jon doesn't deny it.
Jon gets into bed first, and fusses with chargers and alarms while Martin gets into a t-shirt and boxers. He gets the light and Jon follows the sound he makes as he approaches the bed in plunging darkness, the disturbance of the covers. Jon immediately curls against his shape, tucking himself tight and buried against his chest.
Martin doesn't comment on how clingy Jon is, how he knots their legs together, clutches him over-tight. On how hot the bed is going to get, on how his arm will go numb quickly from the angle. His own arms come around just as fiercely. He tells Jon goodnight, that he loves him into his hair, and Jon whispers it back into the dark and the heat, and knows it's true to the bones of him.
Neither of them sleep all that much that night.

Sometimes even the most beautiful things die. Itâs the sad cycle of life.Â
It starts with a spark, a first touch, a first look, a first kiss;Â
a few embers of warmth, holding hands, secret glances, flirty texts;Â
the roaring flames of passion, clinging to one another, leaving the party early, tangled limbs and tangled sheets;Â
then the steady heat of a well-tended fire, cozy mornings making coffee, binging your favorite shows, texting to see how your day is.Â
But, sometimes, even the most loved and cared for fires die. They go out with little warning or reason. What was a welcome flame in the hearth one night may be a bed of ash by morning.Â
Their fire died a long time ago. It wasnât anyoneâs fault - no one was trying to douse the flames - it just went out. When they sat down and discussed breaking up - parting ways was a more apropos term - she hadnât even cried. When he packed up and moved out, it was unceremonious. He even kissed her forehead as he left, like heâd done a hundred times before, only this time he wasnât coming back.Â
She still dreamed about him. Sometimes unbidden images of picket fences and a dog and home-cooked meals and potted plants intruded upon her thoughts. Once, when her period was late, sheâd even dreamt of a curly-haired little boy with blue eyes - which was ridiculous because she was very single at the time. Did she even want to have kids?
He thought about her, too. Each new destination she traveled to brought new Instagram posts and awakened an ache in his chest he couldnât quite place. That ache deepened when she revisited places they had gone together - unwanted memories flooding his senses. The smell of coconut still sent him spinning, missing the feeling of running his fingers through her hair, over the smooth skin of her arms and legs.Â
What hurt so badly about their fire dying wasnât that it died. What hurt was that it should never have died; that it died so quietly and suddenly; that one day it was there, burning bright, and the next it was a cold gray heap of coals.Â
Even their friends were surprised when he moved back home. âWhere is she?â and âWhat happened?â and âWe had no idea you had any problems.â
Followed by the futile response of, âIt was just time to move on.â
And they did move on, eventually. She traveled to forget and perhaps after a few months she could call herself truly happy - though there was always an ache of not having someone to share each experience with. He stayed at home, but he opened his own business and the familiarity of home soothed any wounds he sustained. Their fire might have gone out, but they kept the bed of ash in the fireplace, a shrine to what they once had, and it was more comforting than sad after a time.Â
When the virus first hit, sheâd been back in the states, on the West Coast. She messaged him:
Are you safe? Still have a job? Anyone sick?
Fine for now. You?
Fine.
When the protesting started, he knew sheâd be in the thick of it. Not that he didnât get involved, he just knew her passion for people and justice. He messaged her back this time:
Youâre protesting, arenât you? Are you safe?
Of course! But Iâm being careful. You?
Staying safe. Protesting here, too.Â
Hurricane Isaias wasnât meant to be a bad storm, but she had still tracked it up the East Coast. Her suspicions were confirmed when it intensified.
Isaias didnât wipe yâall out, did it?
No, blew through pretty quick. The Cut took a hit. Gonna take some time to fix it up.Â
At first, after reading the headlines about the fires out west, he thought it was a joke. As they spread, he realized how serious it was and it worried him.Â
You evacuated, right? The air quality is shit where you are.Â
Yep. Gonna take a pandemic-friendly tour of some national parks further east.
Every new development meant more messages sent. Simple little check-ins that meant nothing and everything. It was a scary year the world faced, and even after all those months apart, the only thing they wanted was to find comfort in one anotherâs safety. On opposite ends of the country, the two of them tied together by current events and the memory of their relationship.Â
Mid-September, while she was traveling away from the fires on the West Coast, he got a call from her mother. He hadnât spoken to her mother much since they had broken up, over a year ago, but she still liked his Instagram posts and struck up conversations when she saw him around town.Â
âHey, Mrs. Anna.â
âHi, JJ. Iâve told you, itâs just Anna.â Her voice was soft and as kind as ever, but held an edge of tiredness and strain he hadnât heard from her before. âWe have some⌠tough news, and we wanted you to hear it from us first.â
Colon cancerâŚ
Kiaraâs hearing faded into white noise as her mother spoke those words to her through the phone. Her mother went on to explain that even though they caught it late, the doctors were optimistic that her father would make a recovery. Treatments were set to start right away.Â
âMom, Iâm coming home.â
âHoney, we know youâve got traveling plans. Weâll be fine. We donât want to interrupt your-â
âMom, I canât do much traveling with this virus. Dad is more important than any of that, anyway. Iâm coming home.â
JJ cried when Anna hung up the phone. Mike was rough around the edges, and he was resistant to Kiara dating a Maybank, but once JJ won him over, he treated him like a son. Hearing this news was a punch to the gut - it was like losing a father. Even in the midst of his sadness he knew Kiara would be sent into a tailspin.
Hey. You okay?
She was typing in response, then nothing. He waited, seeing the little bubble pop up again and again and fade away each time. And then she videocalled. She hadnât called him in months - not since they parted ways. The little screen showed her in her car, only illuminated by her dim phone screen and the passing street lights. Tears stained her cheeks, but she kept her eyes trained on the road. âIâm not okay.â
âYouâre driving right now?â
âIâm coming home.â
âKiara, pull over. Itâs late. Get some sleep.â
âI canât. They caught it late - he might⌠who knows how much time I have-â
âKie.â His voice was soft. He was always soft toward her.
Her face crumpled as the tears fell fresh. He let her cry. He talked to her about nothing and everything as her tears subsided. She cried as she drove through the night, talking to him when she was calm, crying harder when the conversation lulled. She didnât stop until she noticed heâd fallen asleep, the video call still rolling. It was after four in the morning. The pang of nostalgia that tore through her was enough to make her catch her breath. They hadnât talked like that since they first started dating. A few tears sneaked out of the corners of her eyes, but she couldnât tell if the memories or the fear of the future caused them. She found a safe place to park and fell into a fitful sleep in the back of her car.Â
She made it home just in time for her dadâs first surgery. JJ met her and her mother at the hospital parking lot, all masks and six-feet of distance until she said, âI could really use a hug.â The three of them colliding into a group hug within seconds.Â
JJ made sure the Carreras didnât need anything as Mike went through chemo and more and more hospital stays. He ran errands for them since none of them could risk going out and bringing anything home. He did yard work since Mike hated an unkept lawn. Kiara always made sure to leave him snacks and drinks on the back deck as the North Carolina heat stretched into October. Aside from that, he willingly put himself at Annaâs beck and call. Anything and everything she needed done, he jumped at the opportunity to help. He would even come over in the evenings to play cards with Mike - masks included. Kiaraâs heart ached as she watched her parents get along with him so well. She hadnât realized how far he had wormed his way into their little family, but here they were, acting as though nothing had changed between him and their daughter, loving him like a son. He praised her momâs cooking until she blushed and there were times he could make her dad laugh so hard they all forgot for a moment that cancer existed. Those moments were fleeting and oh-so cherished.Â
Mike deteriorated quickly. It made Kiara sick to see her father become a cancer-wasted shell of himself. As optimistic as the doctors had been originally, the treatments werenât taking well. As chemo wrapped up, his numbers were still dangerously high. November brought another emergency surgery that confirmed their worst fears. Mike moved home. They were told all that was left was to manage the pain and make him as comfortable as they could. They had perhaps a month left. JJ moved into the guest room to be as close as possible in case anything was needed from him. The four of them were left waiting as Thanksgiving approached.Â
Kiara wasnât sleeping. Maybe it was knowing her ex-boyfriend was staying down the hall from her, though that was an odd thing to focus on. More likely, it was the fact that her father was passing away right before her eyes, slipping through her fingers as she stood by, helpless. The sun had set hours ago, and she sat with a now-cold cup of tea in front of her at the kitchen table, mulling over each crazy event that had led her to this point.Â
JJ wandered into the kitchen, opening the fridge to inspect the contents. âWhat are you doing up so late?â he asked.
âI could ask you the same thing.â The words came out harsher than she had intended, but then again, she was exhausted in every single sense of the term.
JJ brushed off her roughness. âHungry. Did you eat dinner?â He knew she hadnât, so he set about making an extra sandwich.
After a few moments of silence, Kiara whispered, âItâs all my fault.â
âWhat?â
âItâs my fault,â she repeated, her lip trembling. âI always kept track of his appointments for him. He was always shit at remembering to go to the doctor. He should have had one last year, but I didnât come home and I didnât remind him. If I hadnât broken up with you, I would have been here to remind him to go.â Tears shone in her eyes and on her cheeks.
JJ gave her a quizzical look, deciphering what she was saying. âI seem to recall being the one who left. But really none of this is anyoneâs fault,â he kept his voice even, wanting nothing more than to hug her, to wipe away all the tears, and make sure she never had to shed another one again.
âI know, I know, itâs ridiculous, but itâs what keeps running through my head.â She reached up and readjusted the messy bun that her hair was falling out of. âBut, for the record, I asked you to leave.â JJ raised an eyebrow as she said this, as though he didnât believe her. The truth was, neither of them really remembered who had dumped who or why he had left in the first place. Nothing happened that they couldnât work out with a little bit of effort. âDidnât I?â she faltered.
He shrugged. âI donât remember.â
âWe just fought a lot, didnât we?â
âConstantly. You were a bitch.â
She turned to him, mouth open. She slapped at his shoulder, âI know you did not just call me a bitch, bitch!â
He smirked at her. âMaybe you werenât that bad. Apparently, I was a slob.â
âYou are a slob,â she chuckled. Then she sighed and moved to heat up her tea. âBut thatâs no reason to dump someone. We just⌠fell out of love, I guess.â
âI didnât.â His voice was so soft he was barely even sure he had spoken. Based on the way Kiara froze, her back tense, heâd definitely said those private thoughts aloud.
She turned slowly, her face pale with lack of sleep and - something else. Was that anger? Or sadness? âYouâve had more than a year to confess something like that to me, and you choose now?â
JJ shrugged helplessly, unsure of what to say.
âThat was the issue all along, wasnât it?â Kiaraâs voice shook, but she kept her tone cool, even. âYou wouldnât communicate with me.â
âOh, come on, Kie, thatâs not fair.â It was too late for a fight. They were both tired and emotional. This wouldnât end well.
âWhatâs not fair?â Her voice had started to rise in volume and pitch as her anger increased. She wasnât even sure why she was angry in the first place, but something about JJâs confession caused her blood to boil. âThe fact that you didnât admit you still loved me when you left over a year ago? Or the fact that you choose to admit that to me while Iâm exhausted and emotionally compromised?â
âDonât be like that! Thatâs not what Iâm doing.â JJ tried to keep his voice lower than hers, so they wouldnât wake Mike or Anna, but the way her eyes flashed told him that wouldnât happen. He grabbed her bicep and led her out to the backyard.
âLet go of me!â She pulled away from him, trying to hide the shiver that ran up her spine in the cool November evening air. âYou donât get to manhandle me and manipulate me into falling back into your arms like nothing happened.â
âThatâs not-â JJ ran his hands through his hair, frustrated. âYou know Iâm shit at communicating this stuff.â
âAt saying âI love you?â At being emotionally present? Listen, I know your dad was fucked up and he fucked you up, but youâre a grown-ass man now. You could have learned how to be there for me!â
âDonât bring him into this!â Theyâd had this fight a million times before. The recurring theme of their demise being communication. Their fire had been sputtering under the faulty system they had in place long before they realized what their problems were - it was something neither of them wanted to admit. âFuck it, Kie, even if I had wanted to get any better at communicating, you were no help. You held every single one of my mistakes over my head. There was no road to redemption for you.â
âNo, no thatâs not true. I tried to help you-â
âOnly telling me what I did wrong wasnât helpful.â
She opened her mouth and closed it again, stuttering in anger. âWell⌠if you still loved me so much, why did you leave?â
âWhy stay when I knew you didnât love me anymore?â JJâs voice dropped and he avoided eye contact with her.Â
Her eyes grew wide in realization. âYou know what? Fuck you! I loved you until the day you left. If I had known you werenât coming back I would have fought harder to keep you with me, and if youâre too dense to see-â He cut her words off, cupping her face in his hands and kissing her roughly. She melted into him, a single tear squeezing itself from her eye. He tasted of a coconut flavored vape pod and nicotine and the sea. He was just as stupid and lovely as ever. It only lasted a moment before she shoved at his chest, clearing her throat and turning from him to hide the blush rising to her cheeks.Â
âIâm⌠Iâm seeing someone,â she muttered by way of explanation.
âOh.â JJ licked his lips, missing her more than he had before he kissed her. âOh, sorry. I didnât know. Who is it? Why arenât they here?â He hadnât meant to add that last part, but he was curious. Who could she be seeing that wouldnât support her during all of this? Who could she want to be with that wasnât there, like he was?
âUm, her nameâs Fern. I asked her not to come. I didnât want her to meet my dad this way.â She started to walk toward the door, wrapping her arms around herself in the cold November evening air.Â
âKie,â JJ called after her. She turned slightly, to catch his eye out of the corner of her own. âIâm sorry. Iâm sorry about everything⌠I fucked a lot of things up. And Iâm sorry about your dad.â
She nodded. âMe too.â With everything, she added mentally, and he knew she had.
Kiara and JJ wordlessly promised each other that they wouldn't let their differences ruin the upcoming holidays. So Thanksgiving passed uneventfully. It was almost a normal Carrera family holiday, besides the fact that Anna and JJ did most of the cooking. Mike tried once or twice to wander into the kitchen, but he didnât make it long before having to sit back down. Kiara made him comfortable on the couch and they watched what little football was playing. She was sure to commentate on each play alongside him. The four of them ate extreme amounts of food, and laughed and played games. âTomorrow we go get our Christmas tree,â Mike announced at the end of the night. Kiara bit her lip and glanced at JJ. He shrugged half-heartedly.
âThatâs right, baby,â Anna replied, looking meaningfully at the others.Â
And they did. They didnât travel to the mountains, like other years, but they did go down to the local tree lot. Kiara made a big fuss about finding the fattest tree and over-scrutinized each one until she found the perfect Christmas tree, just like always. JJ had spent holidays with the Carreraâs before, but he had never been so intimately involved in all of their traditions. He thought Christmas might just become his favorite holiday at this rate.Â
The weeks leading to Christmas werenât all smooth sailing. Just a few days after Thanksgiving Mike was confined almost exclusively to a hospital bed in the living room. A nurse moved in a few days after that. He slept fitfully if he slept at all, and most days, the pain (or the pain medication) kept him from interacting with the rest of them. Kie would read to him in the evenings, starting with A Christmas Carol. He fell asleep after only a few paragraphs each time, so it took a long while to get through the story. All four of them watched classic Christmas movie after classic Christmas movie - many of which JJ hadnât ever seen (to which Anna always replied, âThatâs going on our list, then!â). Mike managed to stay awake for the entirety of Elf, his favorite.Â
Christmas day was quiet. JJ cooked breakfast for everyone, and Anna gushed about how good his cooking had gotten. They had opted not to exchange gifts this holiday, instead filling their stockings with all their favorite candies and snacks. It had been JJâs idea, and Kiara thought he might have been a secret genius for suggesting it. In the afternoon, Fern called Kie and they talked for over an hour. JJ thought she looked satisfied when she returned, but nowhere near as happy as one should be when they got off a long conversation with their girlfriend. It was probably just the current circumstances. She didnât say anything other than, âWhatâs the next movie, Dad?â
Mike died two days after Christmas. He went in his sleep, which was exactly what he had wanted. No fuss, no doctors trying desperately to save him. Just a good nightâs sleep where he peacefully breathed his last. He didnât look the same as he once had. Cancer had changed him so drastically, his once strong imposing frame a mere shadow of its former glory. But his face was smoothed out, lines of pain, grief, and illness wiped away, leaving simply peace. He could have been asleep, but now he would never wake up. Looking at him, Kiara felt like she was drowning. Like every breath she fought to take just filled her lungs with more and more water. Her dad was her rock, and now she was sinking in a wide, dark ocean. She thought she might never breathe again.Â
The funeral was tiny - it was only close family that attended - three days after he passed. The sky was clear and blue and the air was cold, typical North Carolina winter. It had snowed the day before, just a bit, so the ground was frozen and white. It could have been beautiful if it wasnât so heartbreaking. Anna didnât cry that day. She said she had cried enough. The snow started falling again that evening, once they got home, and she said that was Mikeâs way of telling her he loved her. She loved the snow. Â
JJ went back home the day after the New Year. Anna told him to stay as long as he wanted, but he said it was time for him to move on. She understood, hugged him tightly before he went, admonishing him to come around often. He said he would, and promised to help with anything she needed around the house, too. Kiara sat huddled on the front porch in a rocking chair, wrapped in a thick blanket with a cup of hot cocoa as he walked out. âYouâre not going to say goodbye?â he teased kindly.Â
She looked up at him, her eyes still bloodshot and sorrowful. He wanted to hold her. He wished she had never had to go through any of this. She didnât deserve it. âI donât know what to say,â she said. âYouâve done so much for us.â
JJ shook his head. âIt was selfish. I thought if I was nearby maybe it wouldnât happen.â
âIt was anything but selfish,â She insisted, standing up and wrapping the blanket tighter around her shoulders. She placed a cold hand on his cheek. âReally, J. We couldnât have made it through any of this without you.â
JJ might have leaned too deeply into her touch, no matter how cold her hands were. It somehow felt colder when she moved away. He cleared his throat. âSo whatâre your plans now? Getting back on the road?â
âNot until spring. Mom wonât admit it, but sheâs not ready to be alone. Sheâll need some help coping. And honestly, Iâm not itching to leave.â
âI thought youâd wanna skip out as soon as possible. Doesnât Fern miss you?â
She squinted her eyes but didnât say anything in response. âIâll miss having you around, Maybank.â
âYeah, donât worry, Iâll still be around. I think your mom will institute Sunday dinners or some shit if I donât come over regularly.â
Kie chuckled. âShe really loves you. Dad does - did, too.â Her voice broke slightly.
âI love them, too,â JJ said, honestly. He pressed a kiss to her forehead before picking up his bags and leaving. Kiara caught her breath as his lips brushed her skin, warmth spreading from where he made contact. Her wide eyes stayed glued to his figure as he loaded up his truck and drove away.Â
If normal could be achieved after a year like the Carrera women had experienced, they worked their hardest to achieve it. Anna threw herself into caring for the Wreck and it had the best off-season it had had in years. Kiara wrote songs and worked alongside her mother and even took some online classes. Anna did indeed institute Sunday dinners with JJ and he came to as many of them as he could. Life was slow to move forward, but Kie and Anna kept each other afloat, reminding themselves that Mike wouldnât have wanted them to sit still crying over him. Step by step they picked up the pieces of their lives.Â
Things went along this way for a couple months or so. The world was calming down, but not fully quiet yet - when was the world ever quiet? Kiara never thought she could enjoy the quiet slow life that was the Outer Banks during the off-season, but after the year sheâd had, she wanted nothing more than simple domesticity. She said as much during one of their Sunday dinners, enticing a knowing smile from her mother and a surprising lack of eye contact from JJ. She cornered him on the back deck when heâd stepped out to smoke. She was grateful they had regained some of the ease their friendship had carried when they were younger. âOkay, what was that all about?â
He chewed on his lip, twisting his cigarette between his fingers. Heâd given up weed a while back when they were traveling, out of necessity, but she was secretly glad heâd never taken it up again. âIâm leaving,â he said abruptly.Â
âLeaving? Going where?âÂ
âNot sure yet. My cousinâs gonna watch the shop for me. Travel the states for a bit until itâs safer to leave the country. Then Mexico? Maybe.â
âWhen will you be back?âÂ
He shrugged, âDonât know. Not for a long time.â
âWhy?â Her mouth had gone dry and her words had run out. JJ was a die-hard salt-lifer. He might pack up and leave occasionally, but the Outer Banks was home, where he belonged. She thought that no matter where he went, heâd always end up back here. Home. How could he leave now?
He turned to look at her, urgency and honesty shining in his eyes. âI know he was your dad, and I probably donât have the right to feel this way, but IâŚâÂ
âYou lost him, too,â she said, understanding.
âNeed a change of scenery.â He shrugged again, putting out his cigarette before walking back inside.Â
Kiara understood better than most the need to keep moving, the change of scenery a welcome distraction. Traveling alone left a lot of time to think and soul-search. She didnât peg JJ as the soul-searching type, but grief changed people; he needed time. She could support him in that.
âYouâre going with him, right?â Anna asked sternly as she and her daughter washed dishes that evening. JJ had just left.Â
âWhat?â Kiara nearly dropped the plate she was drying.Â
âJJ told me all about his plans. Getting out of here for a while will be good for him!â She waved a hand over her shoulder, dismissing Kiaraâs shocked expression. âHe talks to me, too, you know? Always has.â
Kiara chuckled lightly, âSo even though he and I broke up, he never broke up with yâall?â
âYou shouldnât have broken up with him.â
Kiaraâs heart stopped for a moment, as she processed what her mother had said. âWhat do you mean?â She started slowly. âI thought you didnât approve of me dating someone from the Cut.â
Anna sighed, setting down a half-washed pan. She turned to her daughter. âYour dad and I always wanted what was best for you. We thought that meant college, a solid career, marrying up. But we realized recently that that is never what lifeâs about.â She reached out and took Kiaraâs hands, tears starting to shine in her eyes. âYour dad was from the Cut. When we first got married, we had nothing except each other but being with him was the best decision I ever made. He made me happy. I think I made him happy, too.â
âYou definitely made him happy, Mom. But JJ and I fought all the time, we couldnât sort things out.â
Anna scoffed, âYour dad and I fought, too. Fights happen, but you have to realize youâre not fighting each other, youâre a team fighting the problem. Once you figure that out, you can work through anything.â
Kiara shook her head, but she had a soft smile on her lips. âMom, I just donât know.â
Anna smiled, tearfully. âThat is what lifeâs about. Nobody knows! What really matters is who is there to walk with you in the unknown. Who is there for you when you need them? Through the good and the bad. Your dad was that person for me.â She paused and looked at Kiara meaningfully, âSo Iâll ask again: are you going with him?â
She shouldnât, but while considering all of this somehow she felt freer. Her father had just died, she should still be mourning him, and yet she knew that he wouldnât want her to wallow - she had to pick herself up. You knew this was coming, she heard his voice in her head. She hoped she would never forget what that voice sounded like. You knew I was going. Now that Iâm gone, youâre free to live your life again. Live it, Kiara.
JJ finished buying his ticket for the ferry. It was cold out, more snow on its way. He had some time to kill before loading up his truck, but not much. He double-checked the straps on his luggage in the bed of the truck and was just beginning to contemplate how to pass the time when he heard his name being called. He turned to see Kiara running toward him, backpack bouncing wildly on her back. She was all flushed cheeks and shining eyes and curls tumbling around her shoulders.Â
âI broke up with Fern,â her words came out in a rush as she drew near him before he could even greet her. âI broke up with her months ago.â
âO-okay,â JJ replied, heart pounding. A million thoughts ran through his mind. He had just seen Kiara, why hadnât she mentioned it then? Or before then? Why had she come all the way here to tell him that?
âAnd Iâm coming with you,â she continued.Â
âWhat?â JJ wasnât one to be lost for words, but he couldnât say anything else.Â
âYou make me happy. When the world went to shit you were the one person I wanted to know was safe. You were there for me and my whole family in the darkest few months of our lives and you really cared about us. I donât care that we fought or that we will fight because being with you makes me happier than I ever thought possible.â
If she was going to say anything else, her words were swallowed up when he kissed her, hands cupping her cold cheeks. âI love you,â he said when she pulled back to breathe. âI never stopped. I didnât know how to fight for you, how to stay, but Iâll do better. I can be better.â
She pressed another kiss to his lips. âShut up, weâll figure it out. We can do it right this time.âÂ
Sometimes things die. Itâs a sad cycle. The brightest fires turn cold and gray. But with time, new sparks can settle in that bed of ash. With care a new fire can start, burning brighter than before. So, even though things sometimes die, sometimes those dead things lead to an even more beautiful beginning.

âAlright, keep a lookout.â JJ reminded you as you pulled up to the hotel,âWeâre behind enemy lines.â he pulled out the gun, ignoring how John B argued with him as he loaded it, in full display. âCan never be too careful.â JJ reminded you.
âHey, I predict bringing a weapon to a four star hotel will likely cause more problems than it solves.â
âThank you, Pope.â John B sighed.
Kie leaned forward, her head sticking through to the front of the VW, âI swear to God, Iâm gonna throw that gun in the ocean, JJ. Put it back.â
You reached through the window and snatched the gun off him, leaning over and handing it to John B, glaring at JJ as you pulled back out of his van window.
ââYou canât grab a gun like that!â he leaned forwards to argue, but at the look of your face when you turned around, he sighed, hopping out of the car, âCanât forget my badge - professional bus-boy.â
âSo where are we going now?â Pope inquired, following JJ to the doors.
âWeâre getting the internet because only rich people have electricity right now.â JJ explained, leading you through the crowded, steamy kitchen and trying to grab some bits of food as he did, calling a greeting to a guy named Andrew. âSee they got the backup generators going? Kooks donât miss a beat.â he led you to a door, which opened to a load of computers.
âSweet Lord, the internet!â Pope ran to the computer, sitting down, âIâve missed you.â
âLet me get in there,â JJ spoke, âgotta check on my insta models.â you rolled your eyes, walking to the window and watching the antâs nest of rich people thrive. You heard Pope type in the coordinates, and walked back to see what was going on. After the discovery of it being only 900 feet, and JJ telling you about the drone-camera-thing and his dadâs redundancy, you left again, not wanting to stick around for long.
--
âPope, weâre not stealing the drone, weâre⌠borrowing it.â John B tried to justify.
ââHumans are the only animal that canât tell fantasy from reality.ââ said Pope vaguely.
âDid you come up with that?â John B asked.
âAlbert Bernstein came up with it,â he clarified, âbut it applies to this whole treasure-hunting thing. So, which is it? Fantasy, or reality?â
âWhyâre you so weird, Pope?â JJ asked, concentrating on rolling his blunt.
âItâs fantasy, but possible reality.â Kie suggested.
âReality.â John B looked around at the group.
âVirtual reality.â JJ muttered, flicking his lighter on and going to light his blunt. You snatched the spliff off of him.
âThe smellâs doing my head in.â you said, ignoring his hurt expression.
âKeep the signal clear.â Pope agreed.
âYou know what your problem is?â JJ piped up, glaring at you.
âYou?â You quipped, raising your eyebrow as if to say âI dare youâ.
âNo!â he shook his head, holding your gaze, âItâs that you take everything so seriously! And you donât bother to find out what really happened. You make an assumption without knowing the full story.â he didnât break eye contact with you. John B stopped the van, and you inhaled, holding your anger in.
âMy problem,â you seethed, âIs that there is only one way to take most things. I donât need to know the full story, because the message came through - loud and clear - regardless.âÂ
âWell maybe,â JJ started, the pair of you ignoring the faces of your fellow pogues as your voices rose, âif you knew the other side to the story, you would know that thatâs not how it was meant.â
âReally?â you laughed incredulously, and you could tell he knew he was entering a danger zone, âBecause thereâs only one way to take it JJ! Please, please, enlighten me on literally any other way I could have taken it!âÂ
âOkay,â John B said, overpowering your argument, and drawing your attention to the shocked and confused faces of your friends, âYâall need to sort your shit out, in the meantime, JJ, Pope, the gateâs open, letâs go, and Y/N, get ready, getaway driver.âÂ
You moved to the driverâs seat, grumbling about being a getaway driver as you watched the three boys run through the gate, which was crawling shut.
You waited for about ten minutes, bored out of your mind as you held a hardly engaging text conversation with a girl from your old school. Your bored brainâs trance was interrupted by the cutting sound of a dog barking. You looked through the wire gate, seeing that the guard had left the car. You jumped out of the car, slamming the door as you ran to the gate, pulling yourself up and over, jumping down the other side in a well-practiced manner, running towards the barking.
You scaled the rows of boats until you saw the guard, calming the dog down as he shouted to a boat. From your angle, you could see a rucksack. JJ.
âExcuse me?â you yelled, and the guard turned his attention to you as you walked towards him. âUh, sorry, Officer, you left the gate open.â you lied, racking your brain for a lie to distract the man. âThere was a girl with a flat tire.â Please, Kie, be there.
âI know.â he responded gruffly, and you nodded.
âWell, Sir, sheâs like, panicking âcause you ran off, and she has to get to the ferry. You should probably help her out.â
He looked you up and down suspiciously as you played with your hair, battering your eyelashes lightly. He sighed, walking away, the dog in tow. You waited until he was out of sight, and earshot, to call out to JJ. His head appeared over the side of the boat, and then he stood and jogged down the steps to face you. You barely spared him a glance, heading towards the impound yard at the back.
âCâmon, shithead.â you murmured, hearing his footsteps follow you, catching up and joining your stride.
âY/N,â he attempted, trying to catch your attention as you stared straight on.
âJJ,â you mocked, âI donât want to talk about it. It should never have happened, and Iâm sorry it did. Can we move on?â
You didnât wait for a reply as you stormed off, towards the others, leaving his heart breaking in the dust.
--
âKie,â you sighed, collecting glasses from one of the tables, âI told you, okay? He pushed me away. I mean, message received, loud and clear.â
âBut you were drunk, maybe he just didnât want to take advantage of you?â she offered, and you put the tray of glasses down, sighing and looking over to her.
âHe just kind of, walked off.â you reminded her, âHe just pushed me away and walked off. I felt like such an idiot - it was so humiliating, I mean he flirts with me, he asks me about all the right things, he wants to know about me, and who I am in a way that no guy ever has before. And I guess I got so caught up in my feelings that I didnât realise they were one-sided. He pushed me away, and thereâs only one way to take that. Besides, you saw how he acted at the yard.â You dropped your head into your hands. âHow do I face him Kie?â you could feel her rub your back, âHow do I face him, and the boys - heâs definitely told the boys - after I embarrassed myself like that?âÂ
She sighed, taking your face in her hands, âWith your head held high, like a fucking a boss, because itâs his loss.âÂ
âYouâre a poet and you donât even know it.â
--
You had dined at the Wreck, still ignoring JJ and agreeing to reconvene at the Chateau in the early morning to test the drone, which was what you were now doing, as the sun began to creep over the marsh, dawn only having been an hour ago. Pope and JJ stood next to you, checking the camera, with Kie and John B in the water and you sat on the side of the pontoon.
âGod bless geeks, Pope, truly man.â JJ said, looking at the screen. âWhat would we do without you to control the drone?â
âItâs not a drone,â you pointed out, âItâs an ROV.â
âShut up, shut up.â He said, looking out at Kie and John B, âItâs too early for that right now.â
âHey, once we get footage of the wreck, weâll bring it to a lawyer in town and file a claim.â said John B.
âItâs such bullshit, why do we have to do that?â
âWell there is maritime salvage law.â You pointed out.Â
âYou canât just go to the bottom of the ocean and scoop a bunch of stuff up.â confirmed Pope.
âI know, I know, itâs just, lawyers arenât cheap, bro.âÂ
âJJ, weâre about to get our hands on 400 mil, and youâre worried about being cheap?â you snorted.
âAnd as soon as they see the footage theyâll work for a comp.â John B explained.
âHow do you know all of that?â Kie asked.
ââCause my dad said it. Like, a million times.â
âThis tether is like, really long.â Pope pointed out, âIn the wrong weather it could get pushed around.â
âThen weâll go in dead calm.â you shrugged, glancing at the storm clouds above you, âSo not today.â
âSo now we just gotta wait around for the right weather.â You pulled up the weather app on your phone, âOr tomorrow, thank God.â You stood up, âI gotta go anyway. Iâll be back tomorrow evening, so see you guys then.â
The pogues looked confused and you shrugged, âI have a ferry to catch.â
âA ferry?â Kie asked.
âYeah, my brotherâs driving from college to Florida to meet his girlfriend so heâs passing through, I said Iâd meet him on the mainland until he leaves tomorrow.â you explained, grabbing your bag. âSee you later.â
--
âDo you ever think about Mom?â you asked, taking a scoop of ice cream, making Lewis look at you, nodding slowly. ââCause I feel shitty, like yeah, she did some fucked up shit, and is one of the major factors as to why Iâm now living in some islands on the other side of the country, but, she keeps calling me, and I want to pick up. Does that make me a bad person?â
âNo.â Your brother shook his head, âSheâs our mom, youâre still allowed to talk to her, even if you canât see her. Besides, we deserve some closure, so if you can get it off her, then do.â
You nodded. âI miss her. And I miss how happy Dad was when he was around her. How happy we all were. It hurts that she did that to us.â you looked out to sea, watching the islands in the distance.
âMe too, little sis, me too.â he leant against the bollard next to him.
âSo, you have a girlfriend.â you grinned at the way he blushed, âHow long you been together?â
âEight months, since the start of college.â he smiled.
âIâm happy for you.â you smiled at the thought of him finally finding the right girl, he deserved it.
âThanks.â he grinned, âHow about you? Any guys in the Outer Banks catching your eye?â
You thought about lying, but you decided youâd done enough of that for a lifetime. âThere was, but I donât think so anymore. Things are⌠weird.âÂ
âOh yeah, whatâs his name?â he nudged you.
âJJ. I thought we had something going on, but I guess he made it clear that that was fabricated.â
âHow so?â
âWe were like, hanging out everyday, and flirting and shit, but he kinda rejected me when I kissed him.âÂ
âItâs his loss, any guy would be lucky to have you. But if you need me to kick his ass, Iâll get on that ferry with you and do it like, as soon as I can.â
âYouâre so extra.â
âYou got friends?â
âWhat do you mean? You think Iâm a loner or something?â
âItâs a simple question!â
âYes. Yes, I have friends.â
âGood friends? They look out for you?â
âYeah. Iâve known them a month and theyâre already better friends than any of my old ones were. Theyâre the one reason Iâm glad I live in the Outer Banks now. I love them, weird as it sounds. And they love me.â
You went back to the motel heâd rented you rooms in, and sat on your bed, opening your phone and staring at the many missed calls from your mom. You tapped the call button, holding the phone to your ear.
It rang twice, then the line opened with a small crackle.
âHey Mom.âÂ
âSweetie,â you could almost hear her relieved smile, âHow are you?â
âIâm⌠uh, Iâm good. Iâm settling in. Howâs Chris?â
âThatâs great! Heâs good, weâre good. Thank you. For calling back.â
âWhy did you call, Mom?â
âI wanted to apologise. Iâm so sorry. What I did - it tore us apart, and it was unforgivable. And now I see the situation youâre in and I wish I could take it back.â
âBut you canât, Mom. You destroyed my life, and you called to kill tow birds with one stone - pretend to seem like the caring mom you proved yourself not to be, and to clear your own conscience. Well fuck you. You really wanna know how Iâm doing? I havenât talked to any of my close friends from Cali because you made us move so suddenly that they thought Iâd hid it from them. They all think Iâm a slut, and I couldnât win the fucking court case because of you! You left Dad high and dry, for a rich dude youâd known for a month!â
âY/N,â she sighed through the phone, and you noticed that your cheeks were wet and stiff with tears.
âNo, Mom. Donât call again. Donât try to contact me. I thought this would help get me closure, but your apology is just an excuse! I - I donât ever wanna talk to you again.â
âI love you.â
You hung up, falling back onto the motel bed, and letting the sobs shake your body with such force that you couldnât breathe.
--
You got back late the next day, when the sky was falling into darker hues every minute. You were tired, but you missed your friends. You dropped your bag off in the hallway and headed straight over the road to the Chateau. You found them in the hammocks. âHey.â
Kie squealed, jumping up and tackling you in a hug that made you stumble back.
âMissed you,â she smiled, âhad to deal with these shitheads by myself.âÂ
âSorry.â you smiled, climbing into the hammock with her as the boys protested to her insults.Â
âYou missed some good waves.â John B commented.
âYou guys know I donât surf.â You chuckled. âIâm sure they were great though.â
âBut you should surf.â JJ said, sitting on the other end of the hammock, both of your feet thrown over his. âHowâs your brother?â
âIâm good without that hobby.â you laughed. âHeâs good, enjoying college. What were yâall talking about?â
âHow JJ believes in the gold.â Kie smirked.
âOh my God, JJ, do you really believe?â John B joked.
âTotally. Wait, are we talking about four mil?â
âFour hundred mil.â You corrected, speaking softly, your anger at him seemingly having dissipated.
âIâm gonna dream about shipwrecks.â he rolled onto his side, as you and Kie giggled.
âGoodnight, Bird!â You laughed.
âGoodnight, Birdshit!â Pope mocked, making you all laugh.
âI love you guys.â You muttered, feeling Kie cuddle into you.
--
You stood at the bow, sunglasses on as you watched the waves roll out in front of you, and the wind bite at your skin, whipping your hair out behind you.
âAlright JJ, pin it here.â John B called, and you turned around, hopping off the front of the boat as JJ responded.
âRoger that, x marks the spot.â you walked to Kie, helping her with the wire.
âAlright, ladies and gentlemen.â John B pulled out the ROV, âTo going full kook.â he plopped the drone in the water, high-fiving you as he walked back to Pope. Kie started feeding the wire through, and you sat down next to JJ in the cockpit, watching how he pouted when you stole his seat. âAlright, JJ, weâre right over it, ten seconds northwest.â
âGot it!â he repeated the instructions as he followed them. âWhy are you in here?âÂ
âI wanted to sit down.â You countered, swivelling the chair from side to side.
âOne hundred feet!â Kie called.
âYou could sit down outside.â he nodded to the benches outside.
âBut then you wouldnât get the pleasure of my company!â
âI wouldnât call it a pleasure.â he joked.
âTwo hundred feet.â Kieâs call came.
You put your hand to your chest in fake offence, âCâmon man, youâre breakinâ my heart!â
âSorry, bro.â he said, adjusting the steering.
âThree hundred feet.âÂ
âJJ why did you push me away when I kissed you?â
âY/N, while I would love to have this conversation, now is not the time.â
âFour hundred feet.â Kie looked down, âThe tideâs turning.â
âHey JJ?â John B called out.
âYup.â You responded for him, swivelling the seat towards John B.
âTen seconds, easy. South-southeast.âÂ
You swivelled back around, repeating the instructions and ignoring the âYeah, Y/N, I heard.â as he turned aggressively, and you shuffled the chair back.
âJJ, twenty seconds midspeed alright? South.â John B called.
You stood up, the sudden change in weather and instructions causing anxiety to gnaw at your stomach. You grabbed a sweater off the side, pulling it over your head to keep the wind from giving you hypothermia. You went to Pope and John B, hoping to make yourself useful.
âWhatâs going on?â You asked, looking at the storm clouds.
â700 feet!â Kie called, and Pope turned to you.
âA little bad weather, weâre fine.â He assured you, and you nodded slowly, knowing he could see you were still anxious.Â
You stumbled to the side as the waves crashed into the boat, JJ looking back at you, concerned. âThis is not âdead calmâ.â you mumbled as JJ peered out at the clouds.
âJJ, hold it steady!â John B called.
â900!â Kie called.
âJJ, weâre gonna turtle in this storm.â You said, watching the panic in your friends, as you fumbled with the sleeves. âCan I help with anything?â
âSort the speed.â He said, moving so you could control the meter.
â920!â Kie yelled.
âCrank it north by northwest! Ten seconds!â John B called, panic clear in his voice.
âJohn B thereâs too much current, weâre gonna lose it!â Kie yelled.
âSouth southwest JJ! Hard!â John B yelled, and you pushed the meter, turning quickly, working in tandem with the blonde boy.
âHalf speed! Steady at this bearing, JJ!â He steered by his instructions as you slowed the boat.
â960!â
â980!â
You heard Pope yelling that you were at the bottom, and John B yelling for JJ to be steady, calling for quarter-speed. You slowed the boat again, both you and JJ looking at where the others crowded around the monitor.
âSee anything?â JJ called.
You could see them mumbling, and their faces falling. They had found the boat, but came up empty. You helped JJ steer as they swept the wreck twice more, before running out of battery. You could hear Pope trying to bring the optimism back, but you knew it was futile.
âGuys, weâve been through it three times, thereâs nothing there.â you called.
âShut up!â Kie shouted back, and you sighed, dejected.
âWhat? Sheâs right!â JJ backed you. You pulled your hand through your hair, taking the speed controls back off JJ.
âThe gold could be buried, we donât know!â Kie shouted, searching for something hopeful to say.
âIf it was there, it would have been found on the metal detector, okay?â John B turned to face the group again. âSomebody beat us to it.â
You could see JJ getting frustrated, the sight of his best friend in pain clearly getting to him. âOr it was never there.â he muttered. You sighed, turning to check on your friends, who were riddled with frustration and anger. Eventually, you decided to go home.
When you eventually got back to the island, Kie pulled you aside.
âAre you and JJ alright again?â
âHonestly? I donât know. Even if he doesnât see me like that, I donât wanna lose him. I talked to my brother about it, and I just feel like we should at least try to be good again.â
âYou know we all love you either way right? And JJ cares about you, you guys have got to sort it out, you may have only known each other for less than a month, but I honestly canât imagine how heâd be if he fucked things up with you.â
âYou sure about that?âÂ
ââCourse. Anyway, youâre coming out with me, Pope and JJ, maybe JB, tomorrow anyway.â
âI am?â
âMovie night down in the Kook Green.â

The Other Harmon P35 Madaline
TV SHOW: THE QUEENS GAMBIT COUPLE: BENNY X READER RATING: CUTE AF
I laid looking at the ceiling, pondering, thinking, My brain never turned off. It never had as long as I remember, my life had been a strange one and yet I had found my own happiness
"Uummmm..." I heard beside me looking to the other half of my bed as he turned over his mop of messy long hair matted and out of place more so than usual, his face a picture of peace and relaxation his facial hair sat as perfect as usual, his strong skinny upper body out from our covers a little the rest of him wrapped up warmly his face stiffened and he grimaced "y/n? What are you doing still awake?" He asks with a yawn
"Nothing Benny, I couldn't sleep"
"Alright, come on, come here honeydew... Let's get some rest, got a plane to catch in the morning" he yawns pulling me to his chest like I was his teddy bear. Not that I minded at all. I kissed his bare skin and nuzzled closer to him trying to lose myself in a dream, But I couldn't get back to sleep for too long I don't know how he does it I pushed his hands away getting out of bed and slipping on my nightie and my dressing gown going out to the apartment my eyes being woken more by the bright morning light and the lamp that was on in the living room
"Madaline? What are you doing up sweetheart?" I asked seeing her sat by the lamp with her book
"Mumma!" she smiled jumping from the sofa into my arms "I was reading"
"Good girl go on back to bed," I told her
"But Mumma it's not long till up time," she says pointing to the clock on the mantle she was right it was about half an hour before we needed to all be up anyway
"Well alright, Go on Madaline go wake up daddy," I told her she nodded running off into our bedroom as I went to the kitchen and began making coffee making it very very strong I could hear giggling and complaining where Madaline must have undoubtedly jumped on benny to wake him up as she always does if she's allowed then a squeal
"ahhhh, Mumma! daddy's ticking me!" she complained through her giggles I laughed going to the bedroom door seeing benny laid in bed half asleep ticking Madaline like crazy as she sat on my side of the bed "Mumma help!"
"Come on you two" I laughed picking Madaline up taking her back to the kitchen with me giving her some apple juice
"Morning..." benny smiled sounding groggy and tried rubbing his eyes and fixing his hair having slipped some pants on and his usual robe over his shoulders
"Morning benny" I smiled kissing his cheek as I handed him his coffee going to take my own but
"Oi, come here" he smirked grabbing my waist and pulling me tight to his chest pulling me into a deep kiss I smirked kissing back putting my coffee down to wrap my arms around his shoulders and his neck as he put his down to pull me tighter I pushed his hips back a little trying to remind him we were in the kitchen and our daughter sat at the table
"hehehehe! mummy and daddy do kissy kiss" she giggled I pushed him away playfully going to the table with my coffee
"What time is it?" benny asks
"Almost plane time" she smiled
"You all packed sugar?"
"All but my teddies," she says
"Good girl"
"Is mummy packed?"
"all packed up Madaline"
"Is daddy packed?"
"Yes I am sugar" he smiled kissing her head and coming to stand leant against my chair "where's your sister?"
"In bed"
"I will go get Alice, Madaline you finish your juice and go pack your teddies, while daddy goes for a shower," I told them
"Do I need a shower?" benny asks
"yes" I smiled as I got up fixing my nightie but he looked unhappy at the idea "Go shower Benny"
"What do you think Sugar does daddy need a shower?" he asks her
"yes" she giggled
"Fine" he sighed "I am shaving today"
"I'd rather you did darling" I smiled
"what do you think Madaline?"
"Daddy should" she nods jumping off her chair to go to her room
"I respectfully disagree and choose not to," he says
"Whatever benny" I laughed going to the girl's room
"Bring Alice here I wanna give her a cuddle," he says so I laughed going to the little crib seeing Alice still fast asleep so I picked her gently up and handing her to benny making her instantly wake up and nuzzle on his chest.
once we were all dressed and packed up we headed off on the plane to Austin quickly going to the hotel as soon as we landed, and we headed to the tournament
"what if I don't do good?" Madaline asks
"Madaline, of course, you'll do good I know you will but if you don't want to you don't have to," I told her fixing her dress Â
"I want to, what if I lose?" she asks
"Then we will go for ice cream, whatever happens, we can still go home and everything will be fine," I told her and she nodded running off to her table sitting across from one of the boys more then twice her age I went over to the corner of the room where benny stood watching her with Alice in his arms
"Don't worry, she'll do fine." he says kissing my head "she beat both of us didn't she"
"I know, I just worry" I smiled as they were getting ready to start and in the quiet, I could hear the talking off the radio presenter
"And now the first game of the day, Arthur Lewis Against the youngest competitor at this level Miss Madaline Watt's, I'm sure all of us are familiar with her. Miss Watt's is, of course, the daughter of Benny Watt's current raining US Champion and his wife Y/n Watts A chess master in her own right as well as sister to the current world champion Elizabeth Harmon, it seems Miss Madaline Watt's is the new generation in this dynasty of the game and... we have been playing less than five minutes here and he has just now resigned"
I smiled as I saw her win as I always did, she was so sweet our little girl, it was almost clear in her game as well she was our daughter she thought like me and plaid like benny the little flicks and habits we both have come together in her game in her own way, "That's My girl" I smiled as she moved on to her next game
"Maybe this little one will be good too? when she's a little older" Benny smiled playing with Alice's fingers
"Maybe" I smiled  taking her from him to put her in her stroller for a nap
"Uummm...lets have another" He smiled cuddling me tightly from behind
"are you serious Benny?" I laughed
"I want a little boy" he shrugs "Don't you want a little boy too? a little brother for the girls?"
"I'll think about it" I warn him
